Brewers Hardware Dry Hopper Review

To dry hop without exposing oxygen to your beer you need a way to purge the oxygen from your dry hopping container. Brewers Hardware just released their Dry Hopper device that covers all those bases.

    Not really, BUT If you put your hops in a bag and use a stir bar in the bag with a magnet on the outside you can suspend your hops inside of the all rounder. And then when you're ready to dry hop you can either slide the magnet down and submerge the hops or just remove the magnet and let them drop inside. Now I have not done this but I had comments from a lot of other people that said they have. Even with stainless fermenters..

    I am a bit curious about sticking issues with this setup. I built a similar dropper from various parts, not realizing I could have simply bought one from Brewers hardware off-the-shelf, and the one complaint I have is that some portion of my hops always want to stick since the sight glass and valve is slightly wet from sanitizing. Are you getting around this somehow? I have considered alcohol + flame like I do with yeast harvesting tools but that seems a little...extreme? is there an easier way?

  • @diverbob33

    @diverbob33

    Жыл бұрын

    Interesting question! I am considering using this dry hopper for the first time on a non-pressurized fermenter and was thinking about how to sanitize the unit. I guess you could try sanitizing and drying the equipment in a dishwasher (if you have one); or maybe even in an oven. You could still soak the gaskets or any other soft parts in your normal sanitizing solution. But, I also had the thought that do you really need to sanitize the dry hopper in the first place? Maybe you don't need to sanitize the unit since none of the parts actually touch the beer in the fermenter. Of course, you still want to careful about purging oxygen as Brian described in this video. I am going to go ahead skip the sanitization and hope for the best. Maybe Brian has a better answer?

    OK, after thinking about this setup, I would not buy for a conical until you know for sure the PRV is rated at 15psi. A 30psi PRV exceeds most if not all recommended maximum pressures for the conicals out there. They are not corny kegs. I realize you said they were working on getting a 15psi PRV(1:46), but until they do, I would be very hesitant to use this on a conical such as an SS.

    I understand what you're saying. The spike has a PRV the attaches to the 1.5TC port on the flex plus. If I were using this longer term and pressure fermenting with it I'd use an external PRV. Not the one on the Dry hopper.

    @@ShortCircuitedBrewers On an SS, probably could just add a small extension above the butterfly and attach the 3"PRV there after dry hopping. There's ways to make it work. Price is pretty competitive especially considering it's turnkey. Sourcing Dernord parts on Amazon comes to over $200.

    @ShortCircuitedBrewers

    There are lots of reasons. I like how it keeps the aroma in the beer. It also allows for a oxygen free transfer to keg. Another thing about pressure fermentation is that you can ferment a lager at room temp..there are other benefits too but those are just a few. 👍🍻

    Safety first: Never isolate a pressure vessel from its PRV (i.e. with the butterfly valve). Use a tee below the valve if necessary with a PRV on the side. Similarly, a 30psi PRV is useless on a 15 psi vessel. Gives a false sense of security. I can't believe you don't have a 15psi PRV. Spike sells them, amongst others. I wish that Spike's multi-fitting conical top included one 2-in fitting (or even 3", if poss), rather than only 1-1/2-in ones (in addition to the 4"). This would allow the use of the 4" cooling coil, plus a better/larger hop drop design than trying to swedge down into one of the 1-1/2 ports from a 3 or 4 inch site glass. You could also then use the remaining 1-1/2" fitting for a PRV, and the conical would always be protected.

    Simpler solution... Use a strong magnet to hold a hops bag and metal bar to the underside of the pressurized stainless fermenter lid. Lift the magnet and the bag drops into the brew.

    Not sure why you would purge the sight glass and then open the lid to put the hops in? The whole point of this gear to my mind would be to drop hops without introducing O2. You could use the CO2 from the ferment to completely purge the hops and then drop them. The way you did it seems like $275 worth of pointless.

    That is a way it can be used of course. I was just demonstrating how to use it in a pressure fermentation scenario. It is not recommended to pressurize the glass up to pressure fermentation levels. (10-15) so what I did was merely a demonstration of how to do that process. 👍🍻

    So incredibly unnecessary. Just open it up and drop them in. No need to purge with co2 50 times because the fermenter is already full of co2 and no oxygen will be introduced. You could literally ferment open top with no oxygen contamination as long as there is no air movement.

    Well I beg to differ with you on that I've had beers get oxidized from adding hops. By your theory just adding hops to your beer creates turbulence in the air that would expose the beer to oxygen.

    I think you’re both right...depending on the equipment. Done the right way and with a PRV on top and a way to purge the headspace, adding hops directly in can be done without any oxygen ingress. This assumes the right setup. This device is definitely a Cadillac when a Chevy might get the job done just as well under the right circumstances.
