Brewers Counsell & Adames Both Ejected Over Umpire Not Allowing Time Out, Then Pitch Clock Violation

Спорт

During the bottom of the 6th inning in a 7-1 game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the LA Angels, Adames was at the plate and called time out. The TO was not granted by the home plate umpire and the pitcher was allowed to carry through. The umpire would call a high strike, then as Adames was disputing the non-granted TO, he would be given a pitch clock violation. Brew Crew manager Craig Counsell would come out of the dugout to dispute the call and get tossed. After the at-bat, Adames would continue to let the umpire know how he felt and he would then too get sent to the clubhouse early.

Okay.. One, the pitcher was in his windup when time was called so I applaud the umpire for not granting time, as pitchers shutting it down mid delivery is an unnecessary risk of injury. Two, even if the pitcher was not in his windup, the umpire absolutely does not have to grant the batter time. Three, under the new pitch clock rules (which any real baseball fan absolutely hates, if we're being honest), the batter was not ready and in the box at the 8 second mark because he was too busy being a diva about not getting his way, which, in turn is an automatic strike. Other than the pitch being called a strike, which absolutely no one can say wouldn't have been called strike even if the batter was in the box given the state of umpiring these day, the whole things was handled correctly according to the rules by the homeplate umpire. Can't wait to see the backlash I get for this, but i am absolutely correct 👌

    1) You don't know what Counsell or Adames said (unless you're a Jomboy-level lip-reader, in which case, please tell us what they said). 2) I've found out by watching some of these ejection videos that the MLB rulebook has a number of things that trigger an automatic ejection that aren't arguing about ball and strike calls. It's clear to me that some teams still need to adjust to the new pitch clock rules. The only mistake I think the ump might have made is not calling the "Max Scherzer rule" on the pitcher for starting his motion before the batter was reasonably set. I'm no umpire Stan (I'm a Cards fan, and their ball/strike calls have heavily favored our opponents so far this year), but often they do exactly what the rulebook tells them to do.

Update: I just watched from 0:15 - 0:18 at 0.25x speed, and Barría started his motion before Adames' bat was up. Therefore, I think he violated the Scherzer rule and should have been charged with an automatic ball. However, Adames didn't handle it well by trying to call timeout after Barría had already started his motion and stepping out of the batter's box, turning an automatic ball into an automatic strike. It's a tough situation, but Adames should have responded differently.

In slow motion this is no doubt a violation by the pitcher. At Pitch clock = 10s the pitcher starts his motion and Adames' bat is down at the plate, not in a hitting position. Adames has until pitchclock = 8s to get set into his hitting position with his eyes on the pitcher. The pitcher starts before Adames is fully set. That was what Adames was upset about, had nothing to do with calling time. So yeah, the ump makes a mistake here. He missed the quick-pitch. Making a bad strike call didn't help the situation.

The umpire, in this instance, would likely respond with "he was in his windup" or "you called time too late." There, boom, clarification, done in 5 seconds (if that), back in the batters box you go. Its not the umps fault he chose to stand there continuing to argue while the clock was running down. I hate the pitch clock as much as everyone else, but honestly this was handled correctly.

Only one way to stop BS like this: MONNNNNEY...as in umpire fines! MLB, and the other pro sports leagues, but especially baseball and football, should have committees (odd member, excluding the commissioners) to review calls like this and egregious behavior committed by officials. Hefty fines would then need to be imposed on the guilty officiating party or parties according to a fair sliding scale of judgement. This needs to be a message sent to sports officials that none of the pro leagues will absolutely not tolerate especially malfeasant poor officiating that tarnishes the standards of the game and associated league. The argument here might be that nobody would want to be a sports official anymore. Let's see: there are over EIGHT BILLION people on this Earth. I'm sure the human population will never be at a loss to find sports officials...especially ones that act fairly and uphold the integrity of sports in general.

"Come in, come in -- if it's a crisis, I'm glad you didn't wait to bring it to me. What's up?" "Well sir, it turns out that a family of four would have to pay almost $240 to watch the slime-bag owner of the Oakland A's put his revenue-sharing money in his slimy pocket, instead of spending it on improving his terrible team." "Wow, $240? That's a lot of money to watch a terrible team." "Yes, sir." "Gosh. That *is* a crisis." "It gets worse, sir." "How could it get worse?" "Well sir, it costs over $280 for a family of four to do the same thing in Kansas City. And well over $300 to do it in Miami." "Holy schnikes. And of course all of those inter-generational fans -- the absolute bedrock core of the financial viability of our product -- are all abandoning the game because they can't afford to set their money on fire like that?" "Yes sir." "Well I'm glad you brought this to me because I have the solution." "Really?" "Yep. Ghost runners in extra innings, bigger bases, and a pitch clock."

Why TF is it about them all the damn time anyway!?!?! They should have no more authority other than to call balls/strikes/ fair/foul, out and safe (lets face it majority cant even get that right) enough is enough MLB! Misconduct on the field I get it but this whole "ejection due to hurt ego or emotions" is cringe AF, Do better MLB!!

For those of you still in favor of the pitch clock despite early-season debacles like this: This is what you asked for. Actually, you didn't ask. You cried, whined, and incessantly demanded this: a fast game just for the sake of being fast. When this arbitrary, asinine timekeeping in a timeless game rears its ugly head up your team's ass in October, you remember: this is exactly what you wanted.

Nah, we didn't ask for dumbass umpires thinking the game was about them. Pitcher quick pitched the batter. The ump needs to call time there. Forget the batter calling time and it not being granted. The pitcher isn't allowed to do what he did.

What I don’t understand is, why do umpires have so much power?... why can they just throw someone out the game?... that needs to change. All umpires across every game should not have that much power. They can basically change the outcome of a game. Which leads to “getting paid” ... dig it?... I think players should have the right to fuck the umpire up.
