Turning heel in America led to Bret's best (albeit short) run as a wrestler. WCW landed on a winning ticket and Eric Bischoff didn't know how to cash it in.

Yup. WCW had started to get pay off from what they cooked up in the previous year, and WWF was starting to really cook then with some underrated storylines. By the time November/December '97 had rolled around, we had all the foundational elements for the storm that became WWF's attitude era. Especially with the introduction of KANE, and Stone Cold's return with a new brawl-focused offense. Those rivalries lasted quite a few years too (minus Bret vs Austin because Bret was out in Nov). And the theme music? I'll be here all night if I start on about Jim Johnston's talent putting so much together to convey messages to the audience about the characters.

Bret Hart and Shawn Micheals did not like working with Vader because he worked stiff and stunk. Vader should have at least washed his gear in the sink of his hotel. Not sure his style could have been altered. He seemed to like hurting people.
