​@@boydstephensmithjr tbf, I earnestly suspect Oscar threw a little by giving away just enough points to allow Brennan to 'win' if he didn't wager any points (aka gets disqualified by wagering negative infinity) lol. Idk the second place curveball makes me suspect normal playing strategies weren't fully thought through when they wagered points lol.

@@execrisiscoreonearth In the GC BTS (previous seasons), Sam has revealed that sometimes they have to replace numbers on the podiums in post. In particular, to accommodate for cut content during the edit. So, they might have done something like that, too. It is primarily entertainment, so strict adherence to a set of rules is prioritized far behind letting the audience enjoy a hammy performance from Brennan. :)

I love Ally's utter glee at Brennan's pain during the LOTR segment. I don't think I've ever heard someone losing their shit that hard.

@@amevliaIt was during an Adventuring Party or something that Sam revealed that Brennan guesses the rule pretty early on, and throughout the episode, but those were edited out. Truly, just giving him a bad time, and making him look bad too.

And the cherry on top is how they end up with a tie in first place, making Brennan second place and thus, the winner.

@@hahahaspami guess but also the goal of the game wasn’t explicitly defined as being “mid” or being in second place. if it was the latter then in my opinion brennan wins because he did get second place in terms of points even if it is also last place. this was a case where sam is the ‘game master’ here and decided to forgoe basically a semantic detail to make a better episode. the other option would have been to have a coin toss or something between ally and oscar and make the loser of that the winner i guess. that would have been unsatisfactorily compared to what we got

Up to this episode I didnt quite get why Ally is such a fan favourite. I get it now. They're pretty much a Disney villain. And Im here for it.

Ally’s joy in this episode is everything

I will be honest, this episode actually epitomizes every job I have ever had. Doing your best often feels punished.

Aly laughing maniacally in the background during the Lord of the rings part is the best part of this

The same way Brennan was committed to trying his best, Beardsley was committed to not take this seriously and watch Sam's evil machination foil Brennan's efforts instead

I can only imagine how much joy Sam had when he realised that Oscar betting 3 points and Ally and Brennan betting 0 would move Brennan into second place therefore winning the game. A screenplay written in the stars.

Absolutely agree. Brennan loves teaching people about DND, and I’m sure he would be willfully to do the same for Oscar with LOTR. It’s just the fact that his fellow competitors rubbed the fact he got the answer RIGHT, in his face, that might have made him feel a bit too angry to offer that kind of support.

If Sam didn’t buy Brennan his own LOTR 2nd edition box set I will Ben genuinely kind of upset. That is just evil.

that was the point i think - im pretty sure that he caught on that the winner of the episode would be the person who got the middle amount of points, so he decided to lose on half and win on the other half. and in doing so corrupted his own soul

Ally's insane howling at the Lord of the Rings shenanigans just made my day so much better.

In the BTS he talks about how it was actually a regular eating contest - which he has talked about before. (I believe it’s the reason he needed dental surgery, the full story of which is on KZread in a video that calls it his emotional roller coaster.)

I keep coming back just to watch Ally lose their shit at the end. This really did kill a piece of Brennan’s soul

When Oscar won the books and had never even read or seen LotR, you could _feel_ Brennan's scathing rage, especially with how he should normally have won that! This game was masterfully made to spite Brennan.

At least Oscar wasn’t talking about how excited he was about the whole series with Dumbledore.

I love that ash is dressed in all black like a theater stage hand but has the baggiest pants and one leg rolled up

every game changer, brennan gets tortured by sam, whether he's there or not.

The best part is that his compulsion to win ends up coming out on top

If winning the game is defined as coming in second, then attempting to come in first is not "doing your best".

@@mynameiskrysta no it takes calculating how much effort do i have to perform at this task to be in the middle. That takes skill and the ability to understand yours and your competitors capabilities. However that is not the same as trying your best at the given task. They are opposite ideals

Love the fact that they got the second edition for a game where you have to come in second place to win.

His worst day was when he couldn't win a single point. He has said in the past he doesn't mind not winning, he just doesn't like losing. And since this technically wasn't a loss it wasn't as bad as never winning

Ally DYING laughing at the end is so funny

It’s a 2nd edition box set of LOTR, and they put the second book first.

This was the perfect casting. It’s no secret that this episode was always gonna be about Brennan. But Oscar being a mellow guy who is competent, and doesn’t care too much, set up a perfect rival to Brennan as he was *much* better positioned to win than him, and Ally, who, let’s be honest amongst those of us who’ve watched Total Forgiveness, is by far the least merciful member of the cast (to the point of cruelty tbh - most people couldn’t do to a coworker and friend what Ally did to Grant), who would be absolutely pushing every single button Brennan had This made it so that Brennan had no chance of finding peace, with the ordinarily-mellow Oscar at the lead and the merciless Ally at his heels. The book choice, a valuable piece of nerd trivia, was also meant to entice Brennan - who of course would already know its approximate value and lose. Finally, and this is the most genius part: There was no universe in which Brennan came out satisfied at the end. He was clearly unsatisfied by winning in 2nd, he would have been even worse off in 3rd, but losing in 1st, would have been absolutely devastating. Sam, you Machiavellian genius, you played Brennan like he’s never been played before.

He said he'd lose. He got the least points but came second due to a tie, thus winning him the game. This is wrong on so many levels

The fact Brennan was able to get within $2 for the LOTR set is honestly the craziest part

So well cast: the most competitive person, the least competitive person, and an agent of chaos.

aaaah but the best part is the ending, where they realize he won anyway, despite actively trying not to and he's like "what's happening is wrong"

The fact that Brennan was the only carryover from College Humor to Dropout makes this so much funnier

The way he calls out both "Yes/No" and the roseate spoonbill BY NAME, like he's bearing witness to Sam's devilry XD

The brought Brennan on this episode because they knew it would be entertaining. They brought Ally on this episode because they knew they would be entertained.

I have never seen Beardsley lose it more than after the LOTR thing.

Brennan was later able to stomach aiming for 2nd because he figured out he could be the best at playing the others and manipulating them

I think the funniest part of this whole thing was Sam made sure Oscar and Ally were tied in points at the end of the game making Brennan 2nd place, which by the rules of the game means he won because he was 2nd.
