Brendan Murphy, "What Do I Blame My Depression On?" (Counterparts Interview)

Музыка

Brendan Murphy from Counterparts discusses his frustration with feeling depressed without having something to "blame it on." He talks about what has and hasn't worked when dealing with his struggles.
If you struggle with depression, you're not alone.

    Richy Rangel Counterparts has been my favorite band since I discovered them when they dropped The Current Will Carry Us. And ever since they've been the only band that has consistently been able to release albums that just completely destroy and rebuild you at the same time, mentally and metaphorically as well. They've kept me feeling like I'm not alone anymore for 6 years now, and I could never be more grateful for them.

    Anxiety is the reason I found and love Counterparts. The lyrics continue to speak and find hope. Everyone gives me shit for this band, when in reality, it brings me positivity-When everyone else immediately sees this music as negative. It could not be anymore the complete opposite.

    Really honest reaction to the anti-depressants. I'm getting off them right now and I've always been pretty thin but I gained a shit ton of weight on them and they make my head feel cloudy and really stifle my creativity. Just creates more problems than it alleviates.

    Counterparts is amazing. However, Jesus and a healthy church seriously changed my life. I spent hours crying to my favorite counterparts songs. It was therapeutic in a way. But then I turned to Jesus and it was like I didn't have to carry all those burdens anymore. I still revisit counterparts every now and then (obviously). Because I still get upset with things in my life. "I refuse to let this selfish take control of who I am!"

  • @joshuamoore1091

    @joshuamoore1091

    @@rlfs2853 I observed the outcomes of those who attended church and those who did not. I concluded that there were many many good things to come from church and even in the bible itself. Yes, God can be perceived as a megalomaniacal creationist who seeks complete domination of everything in existence... Haha which is what I once thought. I once thought that there was no God and I simply didn't matter at all. But then I realized Jesus Christ had all the answers to life's hardest questions. He answered alot of my concerns. Especially with anxiety and depression. Jesus said to come to him if you are weary, and He will give you rest. And Jeremiah wrote that God had plans for me. And to see me prosper. So stopped distrusting the old bearded magician in the sky and I put on the lense of a Christian Worldview. It has been incredibly difficult especially when other Christians can be so awful but I know that God is not. He sent His son Jesus to die on the Cross for my Sins. And I believe it because it's a good thing. And I have freedom and purpose because of it. That's how I know. But I don't expect anyone to be converted over the internet. I just know that if you are suffering from hate, anger, doubt, bitterness, discontent... I know that Jesus is the answer. And although His church is a broken thing, please remember that He will perfect you in the Glorious Image of Himself. Behold, He is making a new thing! Huzzah! Thanks for asking bro.

    Joshua Moore but how did you Go about actually believing it was real? I’ve been torn for awhile now. On one hand I believe in absolute morality. Which I don’t think you have without a god. On the other hand , the gospels have tons of holes in them.

  • @joshuamoore1091

    @joshuamoore1091

    Hey Brett, that's a great question. And I could tell you that God seriously humbled me in my life. I was a sex addict with multiple girlfriends and I used to abuse them. I abused every girlfriend I ever had at least in one way or another. And I'm just telling you the truth. I was a Casanova masogynist. Deep down I hated women because of what my mother did to me. I hated my mom for never getting her life together. She dated terrible men who proved to me that abusing women was a manly thing to do. So I just couldn't get away from it all. I hurt my last girlfriend very badly and it landed me in jail. Once again, I'm just speaking out of experience. I don't expect any sympathy or anything like that. But since I believed in evolution, my life had no meaning; I was just a composition of cells that just happened to exist. And since we just exist and then we die, I decided to follow my every instinct and that was to naturally treat people like sh*t. I'm not saying that you wake up every morning and decide to be evil. But what I am saying is that without the biblical scope of truth, naturally, all of society falls apart. Clearly fear is a good example of what is happening right now in 2020.... But that's for another conversation. So I've prayed so much for you in the last 48 hours Brett and God is telling me that you should believe Him... He's also telling me that I have no power to make you become a Christian. The most highlighted part of Scripture that keeps arising during my prayer for you is 1 Corinthians 3:7. And it says one man plants, another man waters, but the Lord brings the increase. So I converted to Christianity back in January of 2017 during my time in jail in Greeley Colorado. It was one of the most liberating experiences I ever had. I can't say it enough. And God has blessed me with more blessings than I could ever handle. If it's absolute morality you believe in, I solute you because I believe that absolute morality comes from an absolute God. And if there are discrepancies or contradictions in the Bible, I would suggest that you pray to Jesus, the Father & the Holy Spirit to guide you and give you wisdom. And don't stop asking questions. You will know the Truth and the Truth will set you free. Keep studying with an open heart. Allow the Scriptures to change you. It can be done! It's much better to have a spiritual problem than it is to have a carnal one. Because the spirit has been paid for by the Blood of Jesus and we know that Satan is cast away into the eternal lake of fire. We know the Victor and His Name is Jesus! The carnal person is always struggling in the physical sense. He lacks reason and for his disobedience, he is led astray. But Jesus is Good and He promises to protect you and keep you. The man who truly gives his life to Jesus will never hunger or lack any good thing "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." -Ephesians 2:10

    Praise God! I have a similar thing..but things are a little more bleak for me admittedly..depression still eats me up myself...and a lot of the emotionally entrenching-hardcore/metal music like Counterparts still definitely hits home for me...but I guess that just makes me human too at the end of the day. But yeah, I'm glad to have Christ in my life now too..even though admittedly he feels pretty far in the dark place I've found myself for some time now..But that's on me I guess..a lot more I could get into there..but yeah, I rather not go there honestly. For I would like to go on a brighter note and still say that He has been a hope to me for sure-through it all He has, and I need to remind myself that He's still granting me the strength and opportunity to breathe and survive another day and that's something..even though I tend to take that for granted far too often..Lord have mercy. Anyway, sorry I made this a lot longer than it intially was. I tend to do that..But back to your end: That's beautiful man! And I appreciate you for being vulnerable too in the thread. It was helpful for me even though it was directed to someone else.

    It's likely because they're growing up in a ever-growing darker & more sicker world, who have-for the most part, lost the foundations of truth and any semblence of certainty and considerations of God and Christ' teachings. And some of the most popular things we may use today, could be perpetuating unconscious psychological damage to varying degrees aswell (e.g. mostly over-indulgence in internet/social media/p0rn/other media use). And so inevitably, its becoming a norm. And maybe, it's sometimes human to become so now aswell. But I'm not saying it's good to be mentally ill in any respect-and I'm not saying it's always the worlds fault for such illnesses that take place, but something to consider if we're seeing such a widespread epidemic of people who have no particular reason as to why they became mentally ill in the first place. From what I can tell at least, there's just something deeply wrong with the world at hand, and everything that I've seen just seems to be a strange irony or paradox man...and there's so much we don't know..but trusting in Christ has helped me to find some hope amidst all the chaos and doubt..and may He help you too. God bless!
