There are several versions of The General. It was cut down into several lengths over the years. I have seen several versions. Back when I was a teenager in the 1970's (before vidoetape players were common), several teachers in my school decided to rent the movie to show it to their classes. Many teachers did not know how to run the 16mm film projectors, and I was one of the nerdy students that had gotten a "projection license". I think I saw this movie at least 6 times that week and still love it.

That's Amazing! In your opinion, is watching it on a projector the superior way to view it?

@@kindofafilmmaker It mainly depends on how nostalgic you are for things like the sound of the projector ticking away. Also, there are certain artifacts that make the experience a little different. As films get older, the holes for the drive sprockets get worn, causing some vertical judder because the film is not stopped in the exact right spot for each frame. The film itself gets damaged and dust, scratches, etc flash on the screen frame by frame. Some people, like me, have quick enough perception to actually notice things like this on individual frames, but most people do not. The quality of individual films varied too. There were companies that rented films, and some of them were very old. Sometimes you would get a clean, new copy and othertimes your copy would be scratched or faded.

Not sure if I've seen 'The General". (Dad used to borrow a projector and show silent movies. And amazing technicolor nature films from the Soviet embassy.) Certainly haven't seen "The Red Balloon." But certainly the other two. My 4 must saves? I think I'd be a pile of cinders before I'd decided.

Haha! True! I can imagine myself picking up a film and putting it back so I can pick up another one while the house burns down around me.@@stephenlitten1789
