Breeding Amano Shrimp is EASY! Complete Detailed Presentation | Avatar Aquatics Method

It has been brought to my attention that post larvae can remain in saltwater for quite some time(10 days). This can potentially suggest that shrimps are able to be acclimated in a group, saving energy and costs over time.

    Thank you for the great video and the detailed information. I made it to almost the 3 week stage but lost them. I think it might have been due to not feeding enough or the bacterial problem you described. I wasn't supplementing the phytoplankton nor was I cleaning the bottom. I thought the algae growing there was doing good now I know better. How do you clean the bottom of the container without sucking out the zoas? Would it be alright to transfer them with some of their water (partial water change) to a similar clean container so that their current container can be cleaned and then used again when their container needs cleaning i.e. moving them back and forth?

  • @AvatarAquatics

    @AvatarAquatics

    3 жыл бұрын

    if you arent feeding phyto, normal algae on the bottom is fine. its the other stuff that can cause a problem. moving containers is exactly how I clean the bottom. faster and more through than siphoning... be sure to check for zoeas that are sticking to the container though.

    Hello Anthony, I use a thin airline tube and brush to scrape off the detritus, scraping off and siphoning with one hand. You will definitely suck up some smaller zoes, so keep a container that you can shine a light on and remove them later with a pipette. As for bigger ones that you can see, I use my other hand to stop the water flow from the tube's opening when I get too close. To maintain salinity just test with a refractometer when you are changing water and refill with fresh or salt water to account for loss.

Never heard about these subspecies of "Amanos" As of my experiecnce I had berried Amano twice or three times, but never encouraged myself to breed them. I may try it now with the gained information. And I succesfully made FRESHWATER green algae to live in SALTWATER by adding the evaporated water from my freshwater tank (in 2 liter jar) I use it for rising my brine shrimp to bigger stage now without feeding just light and the algae :D

    It is really interesting topic for sure. I don't know if this will work but what if you use 20G tank and place a divider in the middle where shrimplet can't pass but the plankton can? then on the plankton side you can run really high flow and by the time water get over to the side where the shrimplets are they won't be blown around too much. Also I always find small containers are very hard to maintain water quality. Regardless! Great work :)

    Yes, i would recommend containers 2.5-5gallon. For some people saltwater is easy to get and in that instance the larger the better. sadly i have to mix my own and its quite expensive :( I think with your method, the water will mix anyways and the bottom will still get dirty.

    Hello! I have failed my first attempt today at day 32. It was going great until day 25, after which population started to decline fast, and shrimps started to have less.movement and keep staying at bottom. I was cleaning the bottom every day changing like 5 percent of water and after day 25 I started to find so many of dead or semi alive shrimps every day. Today after I realized only a dozen of shrimps left I started thinking they morphed already and I moved them to 15 ppm water out of current 33 one. Few hours later they all died. Still I don't think it's water issue as I have second batch of newborns mixed with them since 2 days and they look all healthy. NO3 has been decreasing from 10 at start to around 1 now, so it's not that . I have "green water" from phytoplankton but no rotifers,I don't know if that was issue? Do you think it could happened because of starvation even at green water?

Should I leave her in there longer to let her drop the rest? Or remove back to community tank and begin salt transition? 2) I’ll have to do water changes often since I’ll be trying to feed them preserved tetramesis and nanochlorosis, what is the best way to do water changes without removing the Zoes? My tanks are all dirted and heavily planted so maybe the plants are absorbing the ammonia. I said blue green algae before but it's actually cooked and baked and renamed Spirulina. I was wondering if you personally have tested spirulina as a food source.

    After waiting for so long I found my first berried Amano shrimp yesterday! I really want to try to raise them as I could use way more of these excellent cleaners. You said it's best to use sea water. I live just 5 km from the sea, but the salinity here is only 18‰ and 26‰ (Kattegat). That's too low as I understand. Can I still harvest this sea water today and put on my terrace for algae to grow? For the salinity tank should I use actual sea water and then add "Middeterrenean sea salt" from the shop to raise to 35‰?

    got a small but crucial question, would it be possible to breed these by just adding places to hide near the surface "to prevent adults from eating babies" where the light and algae is- maybe even feeding the babies algae tabs, as well as adding a small amount of salt to make the water brackish rather than fresh? I really want to make it work without having a separate tank, as I live in an apartment and separate tanks are kind of against the rules.

    As said in the video brackish water seems to yeald less results than plain salt for the larvaes. Meanwhile the adult will not like at all brackish water. If you're willing to take the risk go ahead, but personnaly i wouldn't want my adults to die from this.

    Hi again, great tip of using sea water, the guys are seemingly all still alive in my 10L tank, but don't seem to be growing very well on algae alone, I'm debating buying 100ML of tetraselmis as a feed for them, my question is can i feed this to then directly (e.g. 1ML per 10 litres daily maybe? Or is that too much), or do i have to cultivate a colony using the tetracelmis that i purchase and feed them from the colony, probably a silly question but my marine knowledge is poor! Many thanks!

  • @AvatarAquatics

    @AvatarAquatics

    You can feed directly. Cultures usually last a month in the refrigerator if you shake it every day, culturing more yourself just makes it so you can keep the tetraselmis growing fresh and not have to buy more. You can ask around your saltwater community if some hobbyists will sell you for cheaper than stores

    As long as there is clean water, food, and a normal light/day cycle, your females will be happy and drop eggs. Sometimes it can take longer than what I said in the video. I wouldn’t worry about being a few days late(some sources even claim 1-2 weeks late, a testament to the variety of conditions these shrimps come from) and I would not move the females back into the community tank in case the changing water triggers them to release into the community tank.

    Hi! This is the most info I’ve found anywhere! I currently have about 2000 Zoe’s in a 5 gallon of 35ppm saltwater that I’ve gotten from 3 different mama’s that I convinced to drop eggs in mason jar with fast bubbles. I now have 10-15 larger and orange colored Zoe’s in a separate 2.5 gallon that I’m watching closely, they’re the largest ones I separated at night (flashlights, etc.) I have third container on standby with reverse osmosis water, waiting for post-de-salivated amanos. WHEN DO I start drip acclimation? I will do them one at a time, but what exactly is the final sign? Not going towards light? Moving forwards? Going clear and swimming fast? Help! Please. How do I know to start the change?

    Yay! Thank you so much! I now have eight fully transformed and moved into (almost fully) freshwater! I know eight might seem paltry, but I’m just so happy I pulled it off and NONE DIED! (I also most likely had “cleaned” unhatched eggs from bottom of tank.) I put them in 300 ml of their tank saltwater and put in about 30 ml reverse osmosis water every hour, when I wasn’t sleeping or away from the house. I did this over about 34 hours. What I wasn’t expecting was for them to turn into little rocket ships! There was no way I could catch them so I dumped them with that water into a 2.5 gallon tank with waiting freshwater. Still working on getting all the rest of the salt out. I just started the process with another 5 in various stages, one already in rocket ship form. This time, beginning with 100 ml instead of 300ml so I don’t have to worry about the extra salt. I am using the tetraselmis phyto you recommended. I have a ton of Zoe’s in a different tank that I’m feeding with it and the water seems so much more clear! Thank you for all your help, I could not find this info anywhere else. You are a gem.
