Marion, you absolutely amaze me every week but this is the piece de resistance! This jacket was the perfect ground for sashiko embroidery and I so appreciate your incredible instructions on executing hitomezashi patterns. It takes incredible patience to execute such a project but well worth it. I am blown away by the beauty and brain-teasing complexity of these designs. Japanese culture is so rich and it would take a lifetime to scratch the surface. Thank you for this piece of beauty.

I appreciate your message Ann. I don't know why I've waited so long before doing a decent project with sashiko. I've dabbled with small stuff...but like with the kawandi, the bigger you can go, the more beautiful it can be, especially at first. It's given me the joy to say I like it enough to practice more.. and the long rows help too I think.

Awesome I have recently started Sashiko Embroidery myself. I am still struggling to have even stitching but I am having fun doing it. I use cloths that would have been tossed in the past to practice on. with how the economy is going I want to upcycle everything I can. trying not to waste something that could be repurposed. I have also started darning socks to make them last longer. recycled an old sweater no one wanted into sock mending yarn. works great.

I am visiting family in Maine, USA, and it is 87 degrees F and sunny. A bit warm for this far north. Most evenings it does rain and even though the sun is shining it is humid. But there's something cozy about a rainy day that I like. I can remember as a child I liked it when it rained when I was in school. Somehow the class room seemed brighter with the over head lights. Your stitching, as usual is very pretty and well done. It's one thing I have not tried.😊

When we keep the technique exactly the same it creates a uniform look, even if some stitches are shorter or slightly misplaced. I learnt this in wire work jewellery making. The pieces looked as though they belonged together because each was made with the same technique - just as you did here. The fact that your grid was out a little here and there did not spoil the look. It is cohesive and looks FANTASTIC - yes, I am shouting there as it is so good to look at. Wonderful to have the opportunity to watch and see it build up - each new step adding more beauty. Well Done.

I can't believe how absolutely on point your video is this week 😂😂😂...I've been turning thrifted and recycled cloth into foot mops and "jammerlappies" ( if anyone else here is from SA they will know exactly what that is, and anyone who speaks flemish or Dutch may guess!) And that led me to zokin which led me to sashiko and here I am being inspired by your jacket to go further than stacked running stitches! (This morning I made a palm thimble out of old denim bits because I can't find any such thing in South Africa.) Thank you so much for being so inspiring and letting us into your world ❤. Ps I can't wait for the crochet video 🎉, I am in need of kick in the pants where my crochet is concerned, I've lost my crojo of late. Sending a big internet hug along with my gratitude and thanks!

It took me a minute or two to find out what a jammer lappie is. 😅 Brilliant that you're making your own out of old cloth and stitching on them too. Does it count that towels have a hierarchy in my house? When they get too old to be towels they get cut up for tea towels. After that they go down the scale and become dusters. After that there are two paths 😅 They can become paint cloths or hearth cloths. The hearth cloths end up on the fire 🔥 I'll have to add jammer lappie into the line of descent now!☺️

Perfect timing for me, I’ve just started a sashiko patching project of some bib overalls with holes in the legs. I made myself a thimble from an old sturdy leather belt, by cutting a square around one of the holes, rounding the corners and tying an elastic hair tie through the hole to slip over my finger. I love sashiko stitching and do it freehand, like the looser effect rather than the grid. Different folks, different strokes! We have been in a series of heat waves, up to 100°f yesterday. High humidity, too. It's indoor weather for me. We do get heat waves in July in NJ, but not this much. Out at dawn today carrying water to my flowers. I'm planning a bit of goldwork and beading today.

Wow.. that's given me something to aspire to Liz! I don't think I could have kept even enough without drawing the grid first. But..it was the first time I'd done it. So a lot more practice is needed. How do you manage to keep your lines straight etc...🤔

Marion your stitching is so good and the patterns you created are lovely. I have a Sashiko kit that I must start now that you have given me the motivation. I think the grid on the blue fabric in the kit is marked out with dots rather than lines. This might make the process a little quicker. So lovely to spend time with you again. xx

You always bring beauty to the ordinary, Marion. I love the fabrics you added and those little frills are the bomb! I absolutely love Sashiko because I am very attracted to geometric patterns. I find it easier to stitch something that is marked, so I don't have to think about the stitch placement while I'm embroidering. Good on you for practicing the proper technique. I can imagine how awkward it must feel when you are used to the normal running stitch method used in quilting and embroidery. We just got over a heat wave in central Canada with a couple of rainy days and now it has cooled down and gotten more sunny. It's only 16 C this morning with a forecasted high of around 23 C this afternoon. It looks like we are heading into the high 20's with a mix of sun, clouds and rain for the rest of the week. I hope the weather improves and you are able to get back into your garden soon.

I wonder if you stitched something small? To me.. I think it's better to practice something on a larger size. It gives you a real chance to see what it's like. On this I'm getting good, long stitching lines so I can try to get into the rhythm of the action. It's just like when people try making tiny Kawandi. You just can't appreciate how gorgeous they are when it's just a placemat size...

I’m so excited to see you do this! I’ve had a denim jacket hanging in my sewing room for months waiting for just this. I have the needles and threads and a book but just needed the proper inspiration! Thank you for that inspiration! Your jacket is looking wonderful! I love the sleeve idea so much. So many exclamation marks - can you tell I love it? I’m so happy that I found your world! I’ve been watching for a while now and just love it all. I also crochet, quilt, watercolor, and dabble in mixed media and journal making. Your garden is a dream I have. I do better with houseplants where I can better control the environment. It’s very hot here. Thank you!

Wow Marion, your jacket and sashiko is really stunning and it suits you so well! I love how much you are enjoying it, your enthusiasm is infectious! I was given a dear friend’s old denhim gardening shirt full of large and small holes, lots of freying and thinning of the cloth. Was destined for the rubbish and I feel so lucky to have the chance to resurrect such a loved piece of over 30 years. It is my very favourite long term project and I have been practicing sashiko inspired stitching as well as so many other techniques inspired by you and the wonderful k3n. Such a joy! Thanks again for everything you do 🤩
