Breath of Fire III Review! [PlayStation] The Game Collection

Ойын-сауық

SuperDerek continues his 5-part Breath of Fire retrospective by reviewing Breath of Fire 3, one of the best JRPGs on the PlayStation! Did Capcom create a masterpiece with their followup to Breath of Fire 2?

Breath of fire is a game that won my heart years ago. Capcom improved upon the formula a year later with the release of Breath of Fire 2. Three years later, Capcom outdid themselves yet again. But is it a masterpiece?
Capcom released Breath of Fire 3 in 1998 on the Sony PlayStation. In similar fashion to Breath of Fire 2, you don't need to have played the previous games in the series to understand what's going on, but in order to pick up on some references to the past, or appreciate cameos from characters from previous titles, it's recommended, but not likely game-changing.
In Breath of Fire 3, you play as a child named Ryu, the last remnant of The Brood, who were all but wiped out in a great war, 500 years earlier. After a couple of thieving orphans take him in, they find themselves in a heap of trouble. This sends Ryu on a meandering journey that explores the shades of grey between right and wrong, self-actualization, and the search for God. If the Narrative of Breath of fire 2 was a movie, the story of Breath of Fire 3 is a novel -- An epic quest that sees our heroes travel through molten volcanos, across wide oceans and vast deserts.
If that sounds a bit lofty for a game, rest assured that Breath of Fire 3 doesn't take the ham-fisted approach. It's a nuanced allegory that can either be enjoyed for what it presents to you at face value, or it can be open to interpretation. This game was dedicated to the Dragons. This dedication alone can be interpreted a couple of different ways. My first thought was that it was simply a dedication to the players of their previous games. Then later maybe the victims of oppression. However as the game progressed the dedication seems to shift to people with the will to change the world for the better.

Agreed, It is a shame, that the franchise is basically dead at this point with BoF 6 being a piece of mobile crap. The dragon gene system was fun and rewarding, the characters interesting, the combat was not bad either. I prefer BoF 3 to 4 mostly because in 3, you actually transform into a dragon. While in 4 it is just a cutscene like in final fantasy 7.

Same. Can't wait to see what you think of it. I experienced it first and foremost at age 7, then again about every time my age has doubled until my most recent 3rd revisit. Its extremely interesting to see what the story can tell you based on your current understanding of the world. There are undoubtedly past advanced civilizations buried under our deserts, and the dragon mining/chrysm allegory is clearly a take on our societies use of fossil fuels. Such a brilliant game!

What else is there to say about this classic? One thing; After maxing out the game clock, mastering all the masters and getting everyone(even Peco) to level 99, after demonstrating my ability to slay Archmages and Berserkers unscathed, and even after completing the fairy village(and guessing the 'hits or misses' game on the FIRST TRY(once), one thing still eludes me. That damn Goo King Sword. Well played, Capcom.

However, owning my own PS1, I rented this, and my world was shattered. The worlds! The experiences, next would be Xenogears and then FFVII, Ive been hooked on RPGs since.

For anyone who didn't have the difficulty of obtaining the Goo King sword jammed into their heads yet, I'm a person who's played and beat this game 7 times and only one of those was a 100% run. The only item I was missing was the Goo King sword. I shot up from level 63 on Ryu, Level 59 on Rei and Level 61 on Peco to Level 99 on all of them just to get this thing and I only fought Goo Kings. Let's put that nail on the coffin.

obi0peco no, because neither of them guarantee I'm still getting that weapon, it just increases the odds and my luck is so crap that it's still painful no matter what I do. I don't try for the Goo King sword anyways aside from that one time because he instantly kills anyone under level 55(or at least he completely murdered Ryu, Rei, Nina, Momo and Peco under level 55 -_-) and I'm not level grinding just for an item ever again. It's just unnecessary.(Looking at you FF4 Post Game >_>)

And it's Very feasible to kill him in two turns. I use Charm with Ryu, Garr goes Last Resort, Rei goes Weretiger. In the Second turn, Ryu uses Aura, Rei attacks and Garr uses Triple Blow. The party level I'm using is between 40-47, and I can kill him everytime he doesnt escape in the second turn.

:- O My expression literally when i first time saw Rei reappeared after a long absence. He is simply one of the best companions in any rpg , kinda wild but very effective (skill from beginning of a game, used by weak goblin will make from him a killing machine "command: if i remember correctly). Ahh memories ,it was soo good game in any aspect, it's kinda sad that i can't say the same thing about successors, but still i really enjoy my time spent on IV . Anyway, it is and will be my favorite jrpg of all time, behind it is for sure Xenogears. By the way do You have in plan to make someday Xenogears review ?? Great review you earned one more subscriber . Cheers Man.

I have so many great memories of Breath of Fire 3. I rented the SNES games, but for this game, I had a friend that owned it. We would play it constantly over at his house. I loved the game so much, I had to buy it for myself. The PS1 was the first system that I really started buying games for myself regularly. I really liked where you talked about the dedication to the dragons. I never really thought about it. Deep stuff, man. ;) And I think I spent way too much time doing the fishing minigame than I should have. :P Hahaha. I love how the PSP is region-free. I'd like to get a copy of that version for myself at some point. Great review!

My favorite part of BOF3 is the fact that, mostly, its about Ryu and who he is. You are not really saving the world, or trying to stop an evil god from killing everyone or anything like that. For anyone curious, the BoF3 PSP port is on the PS3 PSN shop. However, it can only be accessed via the PS3 but you can't copy games from the PS3 to the PSP. I don't even think the PSP can access the shop anymore assuming you can even manage to connect to WiFi anymore as the PSP is incompatible with modern WIFi security.

i just started playing this game again, so much fun. i remember when it first came out, playing at a friends house who rented it i stayed up all night wanting to complete it before he had to return it.... needless to say that didnt happen. i think i got just past mcneil's mansion. went out and bought it the next day. most frustrating part was the desert, spent 8 hours wondering around and finally went out and bought a strategy guide. i heard you can download it on the playstation store, but apparently you cant play it on the ps4 :( so had to dust off the ps2

Thanks! When I was around 14 or so, I played through Breath of Fire III and managed to get all the way to the final boss, who kicked my butt pretty hard several times. I think that I was pretty under-leveled at the time though. Playing through this time, I took my time with the game and tried to get a bunch of extras. Because of that, when I got to the final boss, I stomped her into the ground. Felt great. But I think what I'm getting at is that it depends on how you play. If you're trying to rush through the game, you'll probably be under-leveled, and it can be very challenging. On the other hand, if you fight enough along the way to your destination, you won't have any real issues. One last thing that will change the difficulty of the game is how well you utilize the masters in the game. If you pick the right ones at the right times, the game is a breeze. :)

Alright so, no a bad review. Extra points for the Earthbound game in the background and quick reference. I would have to say that Capcom DID create a masterpiece with Breath of Fire III, it was the first RPG I ever gave a chance and now I'm a huge fan of RPG's. Great game, I can see you doing well in the future, keep them videos coming.

this game was my Intro to the BoF saga ..i remember it so clearly ..back inthe days of videogame rentals my local movie store had the abilty to rent our PS consoles and that is what me and my brother did ..we rented a PS and BoF3 ..i played the HELL out of BoF3 the artwork for the unique dragons the master System and the special traits of each character On and off the Battle mode was perfect yes it had a lack of characters the other 2 games had but in my eyes Less was more ..i invested more into the characters and found my favorites for each situation

The game is super grindy but sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered. Characters, art style and music are heartfelt and unique. It's also a rare rpg that isn't about saving the world per se.

This is my favorite game of all time (alongside Lunar 2: Eternal Blue and Skies of Arcadia: Legends), I have played it countless times and think its a challenging and immersive gem, flaws and all. It makes me sad its so underrated, because you feel a huge amount of care, creativity and variety in every moment. The dragon system is my favorite of them all, the skills are full of variety and the the characters feel pretty unique. I can only hope one day the series is re-released on Steam, so more people can experience them.

I just finished re-playing this masterpiece on my PS1 the other day, for the 1st time since 1998. It *still* more than holds up, and brings back such great memories. This is my favorite in the series, and I enjoyed it so much that it inspired me to play the rest of the BoF games (except Dragon Quarter). On BoF1 now. Then will go right into BoF2, then 4. And yes, DariaPlaysRPGs, it was/is a masterpiece. :)
