    Just would like to say that breastfeeding is such a blessing. I have breastfed all 3 of my babies but my milk never came in like what your talking about. I was never engorged, never leaked and had low milk supply and no supplements or anything could bring it up. Despite that I successfully combo fed all 3 babies currently have made it to 6 months with my 3rd. So if your a new mom with supply issues just know there are options out there for you to combo feed if you really desire to nurse your baby and it's ok if your experience doesn't measure up to all the things and advice you see on KZread.

    Absolutely, I never had enough for my babies despite all the herbs and pumping and otherwise being healthy. It’s actually always been a very emotional thing for me. But I breastfed all my 4 babies for almost 2 years with supplementing with donated breastmilk or formula. There are many options out there. But still possible if it’s what’s you desire. Wanted to share because when I had my first, I never knew some women didn’t make enough. None of the books I read or anything ever even mentioned that. Good to know it does happen for some women.

    Just from my own personal experience, not everyone has a waterfall of milk, even at the beginning. I never knew the feeling of getting soaked from milk and never needed any pads to stop the leaks. Also, never got anything into the haakaa. I'm telling you this to let you know that it's still possible to breastfeed for 14 months even if you don't experience those first days or months as she described. My daughter still grew really well with just breastmilk for the first 4,5 months, even though my boobs were never feeling "full".

    I totally agree. My milk didn't come in the was it does for a lot of other women - like, the quick engorgement and such. It was more of a gradual increase, and I was really worried my milk wouldn't come in, but my midwife assured me it would be fine, and it totally was.

    I'm glad to read this. I was just looking this up. With my son day 2-3 I leaked but other than that I have never leaked and my daughter is huge so she must be getting enough. I wondered if something was wrong with me that I don't leak.

    @@OceanMomma13 yeah, I think this is quite common actually, or more common than one would think. 😊 It's just not talked about enough. ❤️ The only mesure of weather or not your baby gets enough milk is do they grow 500 g/ month and do they soak 5 diapers a day and poo once a day. 😊 These are the recommendations for breastfeeding in my homecountry (Finland) but I reckon those guidelines don't change that much when it comes to this in other coutries either. You can of course check with your pediatrician or careprovider, just in case. 😊

    hey sarah, love this video~ just a correction- if your milk ducts are clogged and usually its painful thats just called a clogged duct NOT mastitis. mastitis is a whole other beast which is INFECTED breast/milk ducts, it comes with flu like symptoms. i just had that last week, fevers, chills, migraines etc so bad i didnt even realise my breast hurt so bad a few days after. and this time i didnt even feel a clogged duct- just red and very painful to the touch skin. needed antibitotics for it.

    Mastitis truly is a beast, thanks for making the distinction! I got mastitis in both breastfeeding journeys and I too didn’t even notice I was feverish or had a clogged duct until my husband felt me and said I had a massive fever, that was a couple days after feeling so terrible and not really knowing why. That was just the first time around and then the second time luckily I had that prior experience to be able to tell early on what was wrong.

    Totally agree about mastitis! I did however notice I had a fever and I tried to stand up to get Tylenol and collapsed and my husband had to put ice packs on my chest and back and make me eat an ice pop after an hour of medication not working and I almost had to be admitted to the hospital. I had mastitis 3 times with my first and each time it was the infection that caused a clogged duct not the other way round like some doctors explain. I am going to attempt breastfeeding with my second and I’m terrified of mastitis again but now I know the signs to look out for!

    Hi Sarah, love your videos! As a Doula I would also like to add a few things : 1. It is not recommended to pump for the first 6 weeks as your breasmilk takes 6 weeks to stabilize. Pumping before then increases your chances of mastitis and blocked ducts. 2. There is no such thing as “not enough milk” the chances of that is extremely rare. There are a couple of things that affect breasmilk supply (latch, stress, fore-milk hind-milk imbalance and if the receptors that are not stimulated adequately in the first 3 week. Also if you had a breast reduction that affected the breast tissue, that can possibly affect a moms breastfeeding journey. 3. Mastitis needs to be treated with antibiotics. Latest research suggests that if you have a blocked duct that massaging can actually make it worse because the massaging can decrease the circulation which makes breast more swollen increases inflammation and makes the milk harder to flow throw. Cabbages and cold compressors works better. There is also a difference between mastitis and blocked ducts. Untreated blocked ducts can lead to mastitis. 4. Nothing you eat or drink (unless you drink or eat things with fenugreek / espiride in) increases your milk supply. Not oats, or meat or anything. Fenugreek can actually cause gas and espiride is a anti-psychotic medication with a lot of side-effects. LLL (La Leche League) suggest and and advises mothers to power pump and find a quality pump to increase milk supply. Your body can become dependent on any medication to increase milk supply. A healthy nutrition diet is also essential. It's all about supply and demand. If there are mammas reading my comments, if you struggle with breastfeeding please consult a lactation consultant. There can be so much misinformation and its important to get the correct information.

    I thing I've only seen once online, is with the Haakaa, the flange (the part that connects to your breast), you can actually push the silicone down, allowing the easier access to the opening where your nipple lies to create a stronger suction. Pull the flange "walls" back, exposing the opening, squeeze the Haakaa and attach to nipple to create the suction, release and put the "wall" of the flange back up around your breast. This works well for women of differing breast sizes/shapes to create stronger suction.

    Okay, from a midwife student I have to say you're right Sarah. Many women struggle with these topics and you're informing them right. Also, the "milk supply" thing is kind of a myth. You don't need to increase your milk supply. Your baby can't have that much milk. When your baby is a month old their stomach is the size of an egg, it is like 70ml. That's why calostro is made, cause your baby has a berry size stomach until 3 days old. Your milk supply is fine. You just have to increase your oxytocin levels and pump or breastfeed. That's it, your body is so magical that makes everything for your baby

    Breast milk isn't more nutrient dense in the beginning, it stays that way for however long you breastfeed. If your child is ill, it is better for them to feed directly from the breast (not stored milk) as the milk changes in response to the child's needs. I've been breastfeeding my daughter for over three years xx

    I love this video. I've breastfed two babies to two years and am about to hit one year with my third. I wanted to say that pain in the first 2-3 weeks is normal, especially with a first baby. After those first few weeks, if it still hurts, then it's probably a bad latch. I've known so many women who give up on breastfeeding in those first weeks because they believe that the pain that they're feeling isn't normal and won't end. Also, I start eating raw garlic at the first sign of a clogged duct because my clogged ducts turn into mastitis within a day. I had one that was literally instant! Out of nowhere, I felt this shock of tearing pain in my breast, and within minutes, I had a raging fever that reached 105F within the hour. That was without any previous sign of a clogged duct. I saw another commenter say not to confuse clogged ducts with mastitis, but I treat them the same, and since I have, I haven't had mastitis last more than a day or two. Raw garlic is extremely effective, along with all of your tips. I chew and swallow three big cloves of garlic per day for the entire week that this is occurring. It is spicy and stinky, but so worth it. Please, new mamas, don't go wreck your gut bacteria with antibiotics unless you've tried the raw garlic! There is research to back it!

It is recommended if this is used and you still wish to breastfeed that you only do it for a day and only 3x in 24 hours! But moist heat and epsom salt is fantastic! Love this video! Thank you Sarah!💕🥰

    I'm crying watching this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is the information I so desperately needed with my first baby, and due to lack of support and consistent information, plus a very colicky baby - our breastfeeding journey only lasted about 2 weeks. I then pumped, and combo fed our daughter for 5 months, before switching to only formula. I'm now pregnant with my second, and want to try breastfeeding again. Your video has come at the perfect time, and offered me so much encouragement. Thank you💓 You have made this Momma feel so hopeful, and excited for the road ahead!

    It sounds like you're describing a clogged duct, not mastitis. Mastitis is an infection you can get if a clogged duct won't clear, you (usually) need antibiotics for it ❤️ loved the video though! Just want some mommas to keep in mind that she speaks like this is how it will be for everyone which is not true. If your experience is different then this you are normal too! I watched a ton of videos like this before I gave birth and once my son was here and I did not have "let down" or "engorgement" or the need to pump. I worried I wasn't producing enough because I had expected these things to happen, but that was not the case. I produce exactly what my baby needs, so no need to worry. Everyone is different!

    Mastitis is an infection in the breast, not just plugged milk ducts. Plugged milk ducts are so very painful and can lead to Mastitis very easily. Mastitis has more symptoms than plugged milk ducts. And is even more awful 😔 (also, mastitis does not always require antibiotics either as some believe) Great video for those who need a place to start! Good job!!!

    Yes, I had clogged ducts with all three of mine, but with this third one that had a tongue tie (which we did have clipped), the clogged duct led to mastitis. Fever, chills, body aches, NOT FUN. I was able to get rid of it without antibiotics though. Slept pretty much all day except to feed. I took epsom salt baths, sunflower lecithin, and did dangle feeds to get rid of the clog.

    I am forever thankful that I found you since my first month of pregnancy. Sharing real experiences help me a lot mentally and spiritually. I am in my 3rd pregnancy. The breastfeeding journey was almost okay for my 1st baby until I couldn't feed her any longer because I was pregnant for my 2nd. I set a high hope to fully breastfeed my 2nd because I felt guilty for not fully breastfeed my 1st for at least a year. Unlucky for me, I thought I was prepared but nope. My supply dropped constantly until I knew that my 2nd wasn't getting enough milk. Unwillingly, I fed my 2nd with formula. At the same time, I still hold on to the fact that I wanted to continue the breastfeeding journey so I kept pumping and did everything I know to increase my milk supply but nothing works and I started to have anxiety and depression. Hence, I stopped. Again, I have high hope for 3rd. I hope we will have a good experience on the journey together. Thank you Sarah for sharing your experience. May God blesses you and your family.

    I know that in Canada and USA it is very common to use pump when the milk comes in. But I was taught (Europe) by lactation consultant that the best you can do in these days is just breastfeed on demand and make cold compress after feeding. I was engorged just for three days then everything was fine. Sometimes i used haka and thats ok when you just colect milk that comes from other boob. Pumping gives breast information they need to make more milk. It can lead to mistitis. After lactation is stable you can use pump. Putting aside this one great video and latch lesson 👍🏼❤️

  • @ellymarishernandez4560
    @ellymarishernandez45602 жыл бұрын

    While you gave some good information, it’s important to note that not everyone experiences having their milk come in, letdowns, supply varies dramatically across the board. It’s normal to not have a massive amount of milk when your milk does come in, it’s normal to not even feel your let down and it’s normal to have just enough milk or not enough and you need to supplement. It’s also really important to note that pumping should be used for relief in the beginning because this can lead to oversupply (you can google it, there’s a whole science behind it) and oversupply is when you can become uncomfortable/leaky/clogged ducts/and eventually mastitis which sucks so much and is an infection. Clogged ducts does NOT equal mastitis. Mastitis is a clogged duct turned into an infection and you most likely will need antibiotics to properly treat it. What I’m trying to say is please don’t just buy into all this information because a big influencer is telling you that this is her experience. It’s not bible. Go do your own research.

    Yes. You make very sensible points. If a mum feels she isn’t making enough milk I’d ask about the amount of wet and dirty nappies first and if there’s plenty, then very little reason to think there’s not much milk unless she’s bottle feeding too. I’d also ask if feeding is comfortable as well as check the quality of the latch. I’m training to be a support peer ☺️

  • @abigailmassey900

    @abigailmassey900

    Actually oversupply does NOT necessarily equal clogged ducts and mastitis… I had a massive oversupply just because that’s the way my body is, and never once did I have either a clogged duct or mastitis. Also, while you’re right that every woman’s experience is a little different, the vast majority of women do experience “milk coming in” and have no idea what’s happening to the their body 👀 so it’s helpful she takes about it. and having engorged breasts when your milk comes in is no indication whatsoever to the supply of milk your body is most likely going to produce for a long duration. As for pumping, if you’re over-engorged it can actually be quite helpful even though it does signal your body to produce more milk (which is sort of the desired effect sarah was talking about in this video, geared toward moms trying to produce more milk). Sometimes it’s necessary to hand express or pump a little before breastfeeding even after the beginning because a breast that hast been fed on for some time can because so engorged the baby cannot latch 🤷‍♀️ and it’s perfectly fine to keep on pumping if you’ve got extra, save it for later or donate it 👍 these are all things I had to figure out for myself because I had nobody to support me, you’re not going to get this detailed information that sarah is talking about from your doctor, it’s actually quite difficult to find good information on google, and I’m really glad that she’s talking about it. The fact is we cannot rely on doctors and medical professionals or even google searches, and it’s really awesome that women talk about their experiences now in order to support and encouraged other young women… it’s freaking awesome, something that the few generations before us did not have 😞 Also, antibiotics is not automatically necessary for mastitis, there are many different ways to support your body in fighting off even severe bacterial infection, but of course thank goodness there’s always antibiotics to fall back on 🤷‍♀️ There’s nothing of what sarah said “to buy into” as you said… this is great info especially for moms who may be struggling with milk supply, who get the curt, save-me-time and cover-my-ass answer from their doctor, and feel super pressured into formula or antibiotics (or whatever it is) without knowing that there are sooooo many things you can do to work with your body.

    Moms should know if they don’t produce milk like that in the beginning or ever, it’s still normal! I nursed my son for 2 years. I never sprayed milk, I never felt super engorged, and I only got a tiny bit of extra milk from pumping. Like 30 oz total ever. He grew and thrived though. The volume of breastmilk a baby needs never changes after about 6 weeks. The nutrients and calories change. The toluene of formula changes because the make up of the milk doesn’t change.

He nursed every 1.5-2 hours around the clock until I weaned him. My supply would dip around my period so he would nurse more often but it came back up within a few days. It’s completely normal to dip around your cycle. He is almost 5 and still wakes at least 1x to use the bathroom. I don’t think anybody actually sleeps completely through the night. I don’t. It's perfectly normal to not have "extra" milk. If anything that's perfect because your making enough for baby without the over supply. It's a supply and demand situation, so the more you feed or pump the more you make. I had major over supply and actually had to decrease my supply, which isn't fun, plus your more at risk of clogged ducts with over supply. Once I decreased my supply it was like you said I had enough for baby, not much engorgment or spraying, and no need to pump.

    When I had my first child, nurses pressured me to schedule his feeding every 3 hours on the dot. My mother told me to ignore them and feed baby on his cue not by the clock. So, I listened to my mother, I exclusively breastfed him on his demand, which resulted in me breastfeeding him for 2.5 years on 1 breast. I struggled to get him off breast feeding so my Mother said to put salt around my nipples then attempt to feed him and see what happens and it worked. Then with my second child, I really struggled to breastfeed him for the first 3 days, my nipples were literally hanging off, all cracked and scabbed up and slaughtered by him. I was traumatized, crying all the time and in so much pain, got mastitis too. My poor baby kept crying and I had no idea he was starving despite him being on my breasts for hours. I made the crucial decision to get him on formula because it was excruciatingly painful to breastfeed him. After his first formula feed, both my baby and myself slept so soundly. As much as I wanted to breastfeed him, I had no milk supply coming through, it dried up. My Mum said to not be so hard on myself, breast feeding doesn't work for everyone and that's ok, as long as baby and I are doing well, that's all that matters. My third baby was breastfed for the first 6 months and then formula fed for the rest, she transitioned over very easily. As a mother, it's so important to do what's right for you, whether you can or cannot breastfeed, it doesn't make you any less of a mother. Please don't be hard on yourself, enjoy the process with baby. Listen to the support of people you trust, don't be pressured to do anything that causes you further stress. Each of my 3 babies were fed differently and are all healthy, beautiful and growing strong, now 15, 10 and 7 years old. Much love and blessings to all you wonderful mothers out there, you're all amazing. xxx

    I had true difficulties with some of my children to get a good latch. Nurses told it looks just fine but i knew it was not coz the baby was feeding and sleeping at the same time literally all the time, it hurt so much and they weren't getting enough milk. I had to really help with my hands to milk let down as the baby was feeding. Babies had just a very mild tongue-tie but it still disrupted feeding or prevented a good latch. Cutting it open at specialist was such a small thing to do and the change was immediate. Baby was able to eat and really get the milk, it did not hurt me any more or take 20 hours a day. I wanted to share if anyone is lost with the same problem. I whish I knew this earlier.

    Thank you so so much for this incredibly informative video!!! First time mom, due October - I would love to breastfeed but I’m worried and have anxiety sometimes over what could go wrong. Not gonna lie, when you were going over the initial stage of discomfort and milk coming in I was getting real anxious and scared haha but your tips and just your overall attitude towards it bring me peace. Again thank you so much, this video has been absolutely amazing!!! Also I do admire and enjoy your parenting style and feels very similar to how I’ve always wanted to do it as well ♥️

    All of this is phenomenal 👏🏼 I’m breastfeeding my 3 month old and as a FTM it’s been a rocky journey so far. She took a hot minute to learn how to latch. But man, the biggest thing that I’ve learned is to go with my baby’s flow and follow her cues. She’s doing so much better now and learning how to handle my extremely fast letdowns 😬 my poor girl has to chuuuug when I’m really full! Ps. MASTITIS SUCKS. I’ve had it twice now on the same side and GIRL. It’s like the flu without the flu. So thankful I didn’t have to take antibiotics!

    Sarah, you’re awesome. I loved this video. You have a lot of good advice. It will help A lot of people. I loved the tip about nursing on both sides for supply increase. I get lazy and don’t do that much. Nursed my first for 15 mo. And second for 2 years. 3rd baby us 5 1/2 months and going strong. Breastfeeding is THE BEST.

    Thanks for sharing your experience, Sarah, and you look beautiful by the way. As a second time breastfeeding mom who failed to breastfeed for more than a few months with my first, I would like to add a few things here. I definitely recommend having your baby’s mouth checked by a professional (a neuro-speech therapist or a certified breastfeeding consultant) when they’re born or when/ if you experience difficulty breastfeeding your child. A lot of babies have issues with their tongue so they might need special exercise and/or to get their tongue tie cut. Most moms tend to think that they don’t have enough milk, but that’s not the real case for most. If a baby can’t suck properly the breasts won’t be stimulated to make enough milk. Also note that visiting a chiropractor might help in some cases if your baby has issues with breastfeeding due to tension in their body. Feeding very frequently is definitely the most effective way to increase milk supply. Using a bottle and / or a pacifier may negatively affect your breastfeeding and is not recommended. If you experience trouble breastfeeding the first thing to do is to get rid of those two items :)
