Breast Reduction Vlog: How My Surgery Went REALLY Wrong

It's been a nightmare couple of weeks. I have a ton of mini videos I made along the way, but I haven't the energy to edit things, and so I did a sort of long vlog to explain what happened and what's going on. Sorry it's long, but a LOT happened, and in an effort to chronicle the whole story, I wanted to just get it out in one sitting. I hope it's useful to someone. Please don't let it scare you too much if you're on the waiting side for your op... But there's not a lot of info out there that I could find about what happens when things go badly, and I really wanted to share.

Thank you so much for being brutally honest about your story! I'm a mom to a 2 year old and will be going for a reduction in Feb 2016. I've been hesitating to get it because I'm concerned about my little one being affected negatively by it. I'm glad you got through it, this is my biggest fear but hoping for the best'

So I absolutely appreciate it. I have wanted one for soooo long (since College--over 15 yrs ago). Childcare is my hesitancy! BUT I"m still doing it!

I am in my 5th week of recovery. Recommendations- sleep sitting up and have a friend stay with you 24/7 for the first 3 days. She kept me on meds and I don't remember much. By the 4th day I was sore but Norco fixed that. Let someone baby you and monitor your wounds. I ate lightly- yogurts, grilled cheese sandwich, that kind of stuff. Drink lots of fluids to wash out the drugs they gave you for surgery. If possible see if a friend has a portapotty to stay next to the bed so you don't need to move much. My first week went well. They gave me antibiotics from the start. I am doing great, using silicone gels to cover the scars, they help minimize the scars. This is a process. The best part is I can stand up straight easily- the purpose of the reduction was to help my back. And no back pain. Would I do it again- YES YES YES YES

Hi Katie. I wish I would have watched this video before my surgery. I feel I might have waited a bit longer. I’ve been waiting quite some time for my surgery to even be considered because of all my other help issues I’m facing but they finally game me the go ahead and I took the first opening they had. It got postponed the first date because I had a mysterious infection in my blood and I had to go through several rounds of dialysis.. that should have been a warning sign but I didn’t listen. So my surgery was back on .. had it done last Tuesday.. had complications during surgery which is making it a rough recovery, I went in for my one week visit and I had a bit of redness going on that I brought to my doctors attention along with a slight 101 fever. He told me he wasn’t worried about it and he’d see me in 3 weeks.. so off home i go.. & here I am now writing to you as I came across your video while google searching indications of infection post breast reduction and when to ask my doctor....yeah I get pretty specific and I’m glad I did . Your video.. to the very end was every bit helpful. As I’m getting ready to go to the ER 😔 so glad you’re recovered and very thankful for your video!

I totally understand the nervousness. It's a scary but very exciting surgery! All I can advise is to realize that no matter what happens, you'll get through it. Mine took quite a LONG time to heal, and even now nearly a year later, it's not as nice looking as I was hoping. BUT I am still so very glad I did it. It has literally changed my life. It felt like the worst decision ever for a few months after surgery, but now I am really happy. Good luck!

I had Breast Reduction surgery 4/18/2017, I am STILL experiencing pain and discomfort. under my arms feels very tight and as if I am walking around with tennis balls under my arms. a little OVER a month after surgery, my left side incisions started to open and an internal stitch had to be removed. they look ok but on a daily I feel like I need several showers or time to ice for relief. the incision openings have been the sane with no closing for 2wks. the surgeon just tells me its normal. no fever BUT at 46yrs old this recovery has been VERY hard. i do have numbness (not nipples) on left side.

So the surgeons are happy to take your money and do the surgery... but any adequate post-op care goes out the window!!! They should be held responsible for their indifference. Fever for that long clearly indicates something is wrong. I'm not a doctor, but I've had major surgery a few times and know this.

I think the biggest problem was that when I and my husband called them, the only people we got to speak with were interns. They didn't want to deal with it, I guess. It was disappointing for sure. I'm glad I finally went to the ER, but I'm still furious that it got to that point.

had surgery nov 12. the first 2 weeks were not that bad pain wise but something changed in week 3. i started having pain in my right rib cage ...i thought that was odd. i had very large breasts, 48dd, i had swelling in both, redness in both, but the nipples....no no no they did not look right. they were turning black.i just thought it was a bloody scab. but it wasnt. i was seeing my surgeon weekly. oh by the way i had had breast cancer in my right breast and had damaged tissue from that and the scar from the lumpectomy. anyway, on my 3rd week to see the surgeon he picked off that dead crusty tissue. i bled like a stuck pig. i was in horrible pain. he told me it would get better and stop turning black. it didnt. i didnt have fever but breast nipples kept hurting more and more. i saw the surgeon last monday...they picked off more shit. and and i thought i was going to pass out. and sent me home. between last monday and today dec 21 something has changed for the worse. i have horrible holes where my nipples were. i actually have tiny nipples which frankly i dont care about at this point but i have black, yellow, red tissue , slime but here is the worse part...both of my nipple areas smell worse than something that has been dead in the road. no matter how much i clean the areas and no matter how much i change the bandages the smell stays. it is so bad i sprayed perfume all around my neck. even that does not help at all. i see the doctor in the morning ....i want him to send me to the hospital e.r. if he does not then he needs to send me to another doc who knows what he is doing. however, i am thinking about going to the e.r. by myself and let them look at what is going on with me. at this point i think the dead nasty tissue should be removed, and fat/skin taken from my stomach and to fill in the craters that will be left behind. oh and to make matters worse my surgeon is retiring dec 31. isnt that great? all i wanted was a breast reduction because i was so big. i had back neck pain, upper back pain, pain at shoulder blades......but now i have two small boobs, which is what i wanted, but 2 craters where the nipples should be. what the heck! my email is chimp1@nc.rr.com thanks

I'm going to FINALLY have my reduction & lift right after New Years. Although I've endured numerous surgical procedures, this one really scares me b/c I'm already in pain management due to a horrific head on motor vehicle accident. Strange.... I won't even entertain the idea of another ankle/foot/leg surgery to correct my shattered ankle that didn't walk/align properly or back surgery. I'm tired of being a human voodoo doll; refuse to allow one more thing implanted inside of me. His procedure - the only reservation I have always been a candy a$$ when it comes to pain, but due to so many surgical procedures I've had to endure, I now also have the tolerance of a horse in terms of pain meds. 😨 Nevertheless, I've wanted (no, NEEDED)this procedure a decade ago. The mental images I have of my appearance post-op far outweigh my pain endurance fear. Friggin'-A ! I cannot wait even though the nightmares I have the pain that will royally SUCK like a demon. Thanks for your post. Here are millions of woman just like us that NEED to hear about your experiences.

I had my breast surgery by nhs and in June 2021 after the surgery as soon as I wake up in the recovery room I was complaining of a very sharp pain in my right breast and it’s very tight it’s killing me it’s like it’s ripping inside. Then I was moved to ward. when my surgeon came I told my surgeon I told all my nurse the same thing and the surgeon said it’s a large surgery swelling is healing you’ll be alright. I believed her and then I was feeling very sick for two days I stayed in hospital for two nights I went home on the third day I was feeling the same pain same discomfort same tightness nothing improve for 2 1/2 weeks. Then one day I was leaking a lot of pus came out of my breast. I went to Hospital and they said I need another urgent surgery they need to clean my right breast infection out. I had my second surgery still not better now they said I need to have another surgery to clean my infection. I watch lots of KZread videos and none of them got the infection that I had. I’m very confuse I don’t know what to do, at the moment I’m in hospital bed if anyone have any advice please let me know. The infection name is ENTEROBACTER CLOACAE

Yes, the surgeon was wrong not to take you seriously when you had the fever, but GIRL... you need to grow a spine with health professionals! It sounds like you and your husband and meek and tend to downplay things, and that's not a good thing in regards to your healthcare. If your body feels terrible and not "like it's nothing" you have to demand to be seen! After your first call to the hospital, when he said, "don't worry until the fever is sustained" and then after that you kept having a high fever (104!!!) and were delirious, your husband should have taken you to the ER - no second call needed!

What the hell hospital did you go to? Sounds like a lot of incompetent. Where exactly is that hospital were you at? Use a lot of vitamin C. It is very good for healing. Make sure you eat right before the surgery, take your vitamins and minerals before surgery.

I do not agree with vanity/cosmetic surgery except in life-threatening conditions or cases of disfigurement. Money is not a remedy for your failure to accept who you are.

+Martin Ruddell Whether you agree with it or not, it is something that makes a lot of people feel better about themselves. If it helps people have a better quality of life, then who are you to judge? That said, as I have explained in the video, my surgery was done because of some extreme issues with pain. Since my surgery, I've also found out that my years of larger breasts have caused irreversible scoliosis and arthritis in my spine, especially my cervical spine which has some really awful issues. But even without these things, my decision on what to do with my body has nothing to do with you or anyone else.

+Katie Reed (A Mother Thing) You are right, and I'm sure you looked at every point of view beforehand. I meant only a general comment, more particularly about enlargement. We may all be better adjusted people if we accepted that breasts have a natural function not an ego function.

I do tend to wonder why certain people get extreme surgeries to make themselves more appealing. I feel strongly, though, that people should do whatever makes themselves happy and feel confident. But knowing what I know about the physical issues that come from having larger breasts, I don't know why people would willingly do that to themselves. However, I keep my opinions to myself, as it's none of my concern. I do agree that the function of a breast should be stressed more than the ego.

Wow how rude are you Martin?? This is a major operation and the women who make the decision to have it have thought long and hard about it. Going by your name I take it you're a male and have not one bit of understanding of the pain we women go through that have large breasts. So take yourself off bye bye.

Breast reductions are not vanity surgeries - they are primarily to reduce pain and keep large boobs from causing back problems.
