Breaking the Silence

Join us for a conversation between Rabbi Sharon Brous and Breaking the Silence leaders. The evening will open with a screening of Mission Hebron, a short documentary by Rona Segal based on the testimony of Israeli soldiers who served in the West Bank.
Since 2004, Breaking the Silence has published testimonies, conducted tours in the West Bank, and documented the harsh realities of the occupation through the voices of former IDF soldiers. The New Israel Fund (NIF) is particularly proud to support Breaking the Silence’s work to bring the reality of the occupation to young Israelis before they begin their military service.

I'm watching this in November 2023 and nothing has changed but has likely gotten worse. As a Black woman living in North America, I literally cried watching this. It seems as though the Palestinians are living a worse life than Black people did at the end of slavery. The slave masters used religion to justify their treatment of the African slaves. Religion was then used to justify segregation. I think that what the Palestinians are experiencing is likely even worse than what Blacks in the Americas experienced. Shame on the Israeli government and especially for doing this in the name of God. 😢

I love my Jewish friends. I grew up among many Jewish Americans and attended bar/bat mitzvahs. I went to one of my Jewish friend's wedding, it was a beautiful celebration. I know not to conflate a government with the Jewish people. By the same token, I know not to conflate my Muslim friends with any form of extremism. I'm a non-secular Humanist and I stand with humanity. ❤🕊

I was lucky to attend an event at the University of Montreal where two soldiers testified about their conditions of work and how much they were against what the Israeli government pushed them to do. I hope more soldiers will join to speak out loudly how injustice is done in the name of security.

Is it acceptable now for Palestinians to say "enough of this, Imma fight back"? Are they still the t3r0rizts for fighting back?

One thought that came to mind although perhaps it's too much to ask is the lack of recognition that Israel was established through acts of terror and ethnic cleansing. The current citizens shouldn't be made to bear the burden of their forefathers' crimes but acknowledgement and compensation would help healing I suspect.

These soldiers are so brave, such amazing human beings and should be applauded! Just wish more would stand up and be honest about their experiences. How can a nation deploy 75000 soldiers daily simply to suppress a people with no army who simply want peace, justice, equality and to be treated as human beings? One Democratic State, one vote per person and real democracy…

If the actions of the military bothered any of the soldiers, they could always not take part in the demeaning and humiliation. When you continually bully people for years what response do you really expect? Defund this horror.
