🚨 Breaking News! That's It For KONA Bikes? Kona Mysteriously Leaves Sea Otter Expo 🔚

Is Kona in Trouble? Unpacking the Sea Otter Expo Mystery! (It’s Not Good):
• As The Wheel Turns, So...
As The Wheel Turns, So Do The Days of Our Rides. This series is my reflection on current events in the industry and consumer perspective. With my 30 years in the business, I try to give a better understanding and some added context to today's topics. Let's have a look.
The latest news on Kona Bicycles surrounds their acquisition by Kent Outdoors in early 2022 and the subsequent uncertainties and controversies:
✅ Acquisition and Restructuring: In early 2022, Kona, once an independent brand known for its mountain and cyclocross bikes, was acquired by the Canadian sporting goods conglomerate Kent Outdoors.
✅ Consumer-Direct Sales: In late 2022 or early 2023, Kona implemented a consumer-direct sales program, which caused friction with some established retail partners in the United States.
✅ Sea Otter Classic Pullout: On April 17, 2024, just days before the major cycling industry expo Sea Otter Classic, Kona staff were seen dismantling their booth and leaving the event without explanation. This sudden move has fueled speculation about internal issues at Kona.
✅ New CFO Appointment: Following the Sea Otter Classic incident, Kent Outdoors reportedly appointed a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Kona, possibly signaling a shift in strategy or attempts to address financial concerns.
Here are some resources to stay updated on Kona:
✅ Road.cc: The news article www.konaworld.com/ summarizes the recent developments surrounding Kona's acquisition and the Sea Otter Classic pullout.
✅ Bicycle Retailer & Industry News: This website (www.bicycleretailer.com/) often covers industry trends and developments related to bicycle companies.
✅ Kona Bicycles Website: While Kona's website might not have the latest news articles, you can check for any official announcements or updates there: www.konaworld.com/
The future of Kona Bicycles remains somewhat uncertain. While they continue to operate under Kent Outdoors ownership, the recent controversies and lack of clear communication have created unease among some fans and retailers.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”

Agree. I only buy Kona and this will be devastating. I think they went off the rails the last few years. I love their unique steel takes on road and gravel bikes. But been a few years since they made the 853 version of rove and no wheelhouse in a while.

Kona hasn't been at the forefront of mountain bike innovation for a long time. Most of their mountain bikes are stale. They've seemed more focused on Gravel bikes for the last few years. While Gravel bikes have probably been hot for the last few years, I guessing that the market has been saturated at this point and everybody that wanted one, has one.

I read that Kona just replaced their CFO. He put the kibosh to the race team expenditures back in November and now the trade show at Sea Otter. Every company is for sale at some price. Most likely the CFO is flexing his muscles to show that everyone (including potential buyers) that their cost cutting measures are serious. Only time will tell.

Kona had a unusual position of the largest boutique brand. Kent lost the message that Kona was a grassroots local support fan brand. The direct to consumer move turned off their main supporters. Then it was obvious when the buy one get one happened it was a fire sale as there was no new inventory coming in. There were no Process bikes in stock after Christmas. I personally took advantage of the buy one get one on a Process X. I also own a Nukeproof which finds itself in the same situation. Hopefully they find a buyer who realizes their value is it's punk rock underground vibe, and doesn't just buy the IP and slap a Kona logo on a Walmart bike like Mongoose.

Up here in Canada 🇨🇦 Kona didn’t cut out the bike shops. Local bike shops had fully stocked Kona’s and the 2 for 1 deal went through the shops. The direct to consumer was a US model. Kent Outdoors is owned by a equity firm!!! They have stated that they are focussing on their water sports products and Kona IP is for sale. There is no one passionate or will to save Kona at Kent Outdoors. Hopefully company will be bought by someone else and saved otherwise is gone unfortunately

Another one may bite the dust. So, I'm out with my 30+ year old Schwinn and I get passed by many people. That's not unusual for me except these people aren't like the people that passed me in years past. These people are on electric bikes. It looks like they sell a lot of electric bikes. Covid is blamed for the bike sales slump. Could the slump have also been because of all these people buying electric powered bikes instead of pure people powered bikes? Could Kona be suffering because of people buying electric bikes instead of "normal" bikes?

Go classic slim steel tubes with quality steel and skip the gaspipe. Skip the budget end of the market as that’s seems fairly saturated
