Exciting changes are coming to Detroit's East Warren corridor with the introduction of the East Warren Public Market. This vibrant new hub will offer local residents a variety of amenities, including a small grocery store featuring fresh, local produce, 12 micro-retail spaces, a dynamic farmers market, a community gathering area, and offices for the East Warren Development Corp.
The project officially broke ground on Thursday at 16835 E. Warren Ave., where local leaders and small business owners gathered to celebrate the transformation of a former Pizza Hut restaurant into a 10,000-square-foot commercial and community space. This initiative is part of a $5.5 million project funded by the Strategic Neighborhood Fund, the Gilbert Family Foundation, and the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.
Led by the nonprofit E. Warren Development Corp., the market is designed to foster the success of local businesses and serve as a valuable resource for the community. Rashid, a longtime resident of the neighborhood, shared that the market has been in development for five years. The journey began with the group's first farmers market at Flux City Development’s “Ribbon” mixed-use affordable housing project in East English Village.
Upon completion, the East Warren Public Market will boast two commercial kitchens and a large prep area, providing businesses with the facilities they need to expand their production and reach a larger market. Around 25 vendors will utilize these commercial kitchens to grow their businesses.
Additionally, the market will feature 12 micro-retail units and 26 units for the year-round farmers market. Vendor selection will take place within six months of the market's opening, with a focus on tailoring the space to meet the needs of the selected vendors.
To ensure ongoing support for local businesses, the market will also offer comprehensive wraparound services. This includes monthly meetings with participating businesses to review revenue, provide financial and legal assistance, and offer design support.
The East Warren Public Market is set to become a cornerstone of the community, supporting local entrepreneurs and providing residents with access to fresh, local products and a vibrant communal space.
