Breaking Down Margot Robbie's Barbie Fashion

Margot Robbie went on a whirlwind press tour for the launch of the Greta Gerwig directed Barbie movie, and it delivered one of the best examples of "method dressing" we have seen from an actor is quite a while! Margot and her stylist Andrew Mukamal played on the lengthy history of Barbie and referenced a multitude of fashions from different decades in the Barbie canon, while also tying in references to other Barbie like figures such as models like Claudia Schiffer and Karen Mulder. There was a range of designer brands that worked alongside Robbie and Mukamal to create real life versions of some of Barbie's most iconic and historic fashion moments like Schiaparelli, Prada, Versace, Moschino, Herve Leger, and Chanel just to name a few! So sit back and enjoy as we break down some of the best moments and references on the red or pink carpets!

I was just coming here to say this!!! Leaders like Adam Conover have strongly rejected a consumer strike, at this time. However, SAG has asked influencers to not promote struck movies or TV shows. Not sure how the fashion falls into this though or if the Barbie movie is included in this?

Also, the major problems here are with television series, especially those on streaming services, so it's better to see the film in a theater - especially one that is neither a superhero movie nor a reboot/remake - before waiting for it to hit streaming. The biggest threat right now from the film studios are scripts written by AI, so it's very important to support more "artistic" films like Barbie and Oppenheimer, ones that AI would have a difficult time replicating. While the strikers have poo-pooed boycotting, I did cancel one of my streamers as the current business model is one of the reasons actors and writers are getting screwed over. Putting some of them out of business - or forcing them to merge - will make the business more profitable and then the studios won't be able to point at losses as a reason to not pay the people doing all the work.

With regard to the “strawberry dress” the doodling is very similar to “80’s 90’s” Barbie outfits that would actually have abstract “doodling” on them. When I saw this outfit it really reminded me of the more quirky designs my Barbie dolls tended to have.

One thing I'd have liked to see was something a bit more fantasy/fairytale related. The thing that made me fall in love with Barbie, was the animated movies from the 2000s (not a fan of the ones after that). I love the ballet, classical music, epic tales of good and evil, princesses, fairies mermaids and magic found in the original Barbie movies - with Swan Lake, Magic of Pegasus, Princess and the Pauper, Mermadia and 12 Dancing Princesses being my favourites. I haven't watched the new live action movie, but I feel that element of fantastical fairytale is something I'm going to miss a little (since they seem to be focusing more on Dreamhouse and fashion doll vibes).

I was never a Barbie girl, but I think these looks are all very fun and cute, and sparked my memories of Barbie commercials from the 80s and 90s. And it seems like Margot was having a lot of fun with these looks too.

You're cracking me up, your quip about Margo's airport look. 'The look is Chanel. But, luckily, it's vintage. Don't worry, I wouldn't do that to you all, and neither would Margo apparently now either.'🤭 Chanel, poor thing. Ps... Love Life Ball. I wish it got more coverage in the US.

I saw Barbie last night and people are DRESSING!! I sat next to a man in a pink sequined jacket and white Go-go boots. There was a lot of fabulousness, mostly due to Margot Robbie's Barbie themed clothing on this press tour. She elevated the entire thing. The film is great (weird but great, funny, touching all the things). Greta Gerwig knows exactly what she's doing and deserves all the success.

I love your deep dives! There is always something that stands out to me and inspires me to go look things up or remember a detail I used to know. Specific to the strawberry doodle dress, there was also a toy that many of us had - the Barbie fashion plate(s)! You would combine different panels then run your crayon/colored pencil over it like a rubbing to get the lines that created a fashion drawing. You were then encouraged via the toy to 'finish out the look' by drawing in details and coloring. The doodle nature of the strawberries + knowing the story/vibe of the whole collection it came from immediately made me think of this part of the Barbie experience. Because it often also led to lots of us making our own clothes for Barbie and dabbling in design.
