Breaking Down Homestead Goals: How to Move Past Overwhelm and Take Action | Danielle of Jones Roots

No matter what stage of homesteading you are in, the list of tasks to complete and projects to tackle is seemingly endless. The eagerness to get it all done and see your dreams come to life can easily leave you feeling overwhelmed. Danielle found herself with bigger dreams than she had time and money for, so she created the Run Back to Your Roots 365 challenge to help herself master those skills one by one. Before long, she had thousands of people joining her in each month’s homestead challenge, everything from canning to fermenting to baking bread and more. Join me for this conversation with Danielle as we dive into what it looks like to pursue your dreams little by little.
In this episode, we cover:
- How it is possible to homestead on rented property
- The importance of learning homestead skills even before you have property
- How to get started when you want to learn everything at once
- Shifting your mindset to let go of perfection and accept failure
- Finding the time to learn new skills when you already have a full plate
- Getting over the hump of starting something new until it becomes second nature
- Breaking down the practical beginning steps of going after your goals
- Clearly defining your “why” behind pursuing your goals
- Structuring your days to work toward your goals little by little
- When you have to put some of your homestead dreams on hold to tend to other areas of your life
- Helpful tools we each use to manage our to-do lists
- Choosing what to let go of on overwhelming days or in overwhelming seasons
- Holding on to your peace in the midst of working hard for your goals

One of my very favorite podcasts so far. Great beauty in Danielle's art and in her words. "Do it messy." "Don't let it steal your peace."

Awesome interview, Lisa! Love it! We are homesteaders for two plus years in a 364 square foot home on 21 plus acres. We left a 3000 plus square foot home with swimming pool for this. We love it! We have donkeys, cows, chickens, turkeys, guinneas, sheep .......and 4 dogs! God bless!

We are saving to buy a home, but we've been 'mini-homesteading' on a rental property. It's about half an acre on the outskirts of the city and our landlord used to own the largest dairy farm in the state until the 2008 crash. But it's nice country life with town being super close. We have a garden and chickens and a falling apart doublewide for $850 a month. The house is miserable, but it's a good deal for half an acre and being able to mini-homestead.

As Jessica on Roots & Refuge says, "Turn your waiting room into a classroom". Also, Angela on Parisienne Farmgirl rented several places where she "farmed" before her current homestead, too. Great video/podcast. So much info for everyone of almost every stage of living. Thanks to others of you for sharing.

Great episode! Thanks Lisa! I never thought about renting & homesteading. Not in a position to buy post divorce. I'd rent a house & land from you after you renovated it with your beautiful style!

This was a fantastic interview! The start of your experience sounds a lot like my journey so far, living in an apartment and gaining basic skills like sourdough and fermentation. It helps me feel less like an imposter, and more like I am on the right path. Thank you Lisa, and thank you Danielle!

Wonderful chat! I have a question for any homesteaders out there with goats. We've been thinking about purchasing goats for pets and milk and have put it off for a couple of years because of the commitment... what do you do when you want to stay a couple nights somewhere? & is there such a thing as sharing a couple goats with somebody?
