    That's a very good observation!!

  • @chocofudge1932

    @chocofudge1932

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'd say Lydia is a sort of second mirror for Marie's character. Just like Walt has other characters who mirror him, Marie can have multiple ones. The connection between Marie and Lydia through these sweeteners shows how people who might seem completely different from one another actually share certain characteristics and might have *been* one another had some or several things gone differently in their lifes. They are both kind of stuck up, both obsess over hygiene and appearances and seem kind of unsympathetic at first glance. I thi k the use of such sort of mirror images really is used throughout the show to prove that good is never as far from evil as we might hope to believe. Same goes for Jesse and Todd. They might seem like polar opposites but especially Jesse murdering his second mirror Gale Boetticher seems to suggest that Jesse and Todd aren't as far apart character wise either. Todd just adjusted his morals and lifestyle much more to the ones of his uncle. But Jesse never got so far because he was introduced to a mirror father figure: Mike (although he did admire Walt for some time in a similar way to how Todd does, especially before Mike came around). And so on. If you think about it, breaking bad really is much of a story about isomers, like the second (!!!) episode suggested. You can analyze the whole show using this central theme or paradigm. (i hope this kinda rant made sense and gave you some material for thoughts! )

    Both have a personality with ego and pride, which makes them try not to understand others. I can't help but feel there is some significance in Marie's character being a radiologist (.her job has the potential of giving people cancer but not herself) . Perhaps emphasising the parallel personalities of Walt and Marie as well as the ultimate difference that she has emotional connection to keep her tethered to her true self (ie. The screen radiologists go behind a screen so that they are not exposed to xrays) so that she will not go full heisenberg (ie. get cancer). I don't know just spit balling

  • @JoshuaFagan
    @JoshuaFagan6 жыл бұрын

    This is a well-argued, well-structured video, but I’d like to submit a dissenting opinion: Marie is the moral voice of the show. Hear me out. I know it’s a tough sell. Marie is a narcissistic kleptomaniac who’s created to be unlikable. In season 1, she is the only character whose actions are hardly defensible. She’s self-impressed and inept in social situations. But Gilligan deliberately paints Marie as unsympathetic only to reveal her inner morality later. Why does he do this? It’s a counterpoint to the latent darkness revealed in the other main characters. Walt, of course, is the most obvious example, but this also applies to both Hank and Skyler, who are morally ambiguous. Hank grows as a person through the series, but he also becomes obsessed with his pursuit of Heisenberg. This leads to Walt’s downfall, but Hank refuses to handle the basic duties of his job, even after he’s promoted to ASAC after his success against Fring. His obsession, while understandable, destroys him, and it directly leads to his death. Skyler, meanwhile, is caught in a difficult situation, and she tries to make the best of it, but in the end, her unwillingness to act against Walt leads her to being complicit in his crimes. This unwillingness, stemming from self-preservation and fear, is reasonable from Skyler’s point of view, but the truth remains that she prioritized not having her life thrown into utter chaos above the damage to the world that she could have prevented by revealing the truth of Walt’s crimes to the police before it was too late. Marie, in contrast, has her unlikeable outer layers stripped back to reveal a vulnerable person whose flaws are more superficial. Yes, her constant lying and stealing is immoral, but by the conclusion of the show, she is the only one of the main characters who is completely innocent of major crimes. Even Hank, in addition to the damage he causes to his own psyche, brutalizes Jesse Pinkman after Jesse and Walt delude him. Marie’s kleptomania becomes less a part of the series as it progresses, and the excoriating rant she delivers to Skyler after finding out her complicity in Walt’s crimes is, though not sympathetic to Skyler’s struggles, completely justified. This change in Marie’s character from Skyler’s annoying, self-aggrandizing little sister to a heartbroken, haunting character who is never involved in the crimes around her but is only the victim of them is symbolized by how she drops her distinctive purple clothing in the final run of episodes. Normally, when a work wants to create a character who’s a complete victim, they make that character as overtly nice and sweet as possible. That Breaking Bad instead decided to make that character the most initially unlikeable of its cast is a fascinating and transgressive decision. Marie is not a “good person” by the conventional definition of the term, but with her character, the show asserts that there’s a thick line between what it sees as minor, unforgiveable faults and faults that destroy lives and ruin communities. Marie, despite how flawed she is and how annoying she can be, positions herself firmly on the right side of that line, particularly in the final stretch of episodes, and the show treats her sympathetically because of that.

    Lol having panic attacks isn't a decline, that man went through serious trauma more than once. Minerals were simply a metaphor for his increase in skill as an agent; focusing on scientific details and minutia that led him to discovering the Gus Fring and Gale Boetticher connection. He didn't get worse, he got better. Finding out your brother in law is the biggest drug criminal in the country is a fine reason to get personal. Hank remains the hero.

  • @mikeisapro

    @mikeisapro

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well, I did say there were different levels and types of "bad". To me,Hank's decline was even more overt than Marie's. His initial panic attacks got worse and worse, he went on a clear downward spiral, eventually having to leave his position and got obsessed with tedious, irrelevant minerals. He got worse and worse as a DEA agent. Then he even got worse as a brother in law when his desire to get Walt got more personal than professional. I don't see Hank as a sole hero, either. I'm not sure I see him as a hero at all, though I'm sure most of the characters on the show can be argued to have acted both like a hero and like a villain at times. If Hank is your personal hero in this show, that's fine. To me he was never someone to look up to, not even in the beginning, and his decline as the show progressed was palpable.

  • @mikeisapro

    @mikeisapro

    5 жыл бұрын

    If you don't think having panic attacks in traffic, then getting worse and worse attacks that led up to him not being able to do his job and having to quitting El Paso are bad things, then you have a pretty simple view of what "bad" is. To me his panic attacks were indicative of cognitive dissonance he had based on his overly simplistic view of good and evil ("anybody who breaks the law isn't a complex human being, they're like a cockroach that needs to be stamped out") and he even thought that marijuana was something evil and addictive, and that the plant ruins lives simply because it wasn't legal, which Walt and other characters on the show knew to be false. Hank was always kind of douche and a he was even a bit racist with his racially charged sense of humor which may have been part of the reason he couldn't handle El Paso. He did become a sympathetic character after the attempt on his life, but he remained kind of a douche throughout the show, getting worse in a number of ways while descending into a sort of madness. His anger, which was always present in the show, also got worse and worse as the show went on. That's how I see Hank's character. Of course he's more complex than that, as the writers were careful to make all the characters complex rather than black and white, but to me it was clear that Hank did get worse and worse in tangible ways. That doesn't mean he didn't get better in any way; most of the characters had saving graces and moments of being good in some ways too as the show progressed, including Walt.

    I never noticed the purple thing (I should have). I'd also argue that Marie has a stronger conscience than Walt. Even in the flashbacks to long before Walt started teaching, he seems to have an insensitivity to others beyond how they make him feel. Walt's jump to murder is traumatic, but he has little real trouble thinking about it prior to doing it for the first time. Marie seems very emotionally sensitive and fragile and so she probably doesn't have the actual ability to go through with the harder stuff. Walt, however, seemed to be looking for an opportunity to not demonstrably give a shit about people and benefit from it.

This video's comparison between Walt and Marie just further illustrates that point and draws a closer comparison between Hank and Skyler.

    I’ve always felt like a large portion of the way Marie reacted to the unveiling of Heisenberg and the hypocrisy that came a long with derived from the damage to her and Hanks egos. Marie puts Hank on a pedestal and holds him in the highest regard possible when it comes to his work so to find out that the man that Hank had been hunting all this time was right under their nose and the fact that they both were made fools of for a whole year just hurt her ego impossibly so that she could not even begin to rationalize anything in Skyler and Walts favor. The only way for her to regain her lost pride and able to rationalize the pedestal that she puts Hank on, which shattered her world losing it, would be for Hank to put Walt behind bars himself. I know Hank was put in harms way but nothing hurt more than damage done to their pride. Like the video said the purple obsession is like her making the world how she sees fit so when she finds out her world was an utter lie and she was just an puppet in the whole charade it’s like she had nothing.

    She's loved but not in the way she needed to be. I don't think Hank worked to stop her kleptomania and delve deep into the reasons, he tried to pretend it didn't exist. If you loved someone properly you'd want to make them the best versions of themselves

  • @luqas99

    She is the character who suffered the most by the show's end, she lost her husband, and without his income likely her house and lifestyle, without his emotional support (or that of Skyler, since she and the family moved away) would have slumped further into depression and neuroticism and taken to stealing again, she would have ended up with criminal record and unable to get decent work to be financially stable - unike Jesse, she doesn't get a huge payoff with which to start over, and unlike Skyler, she never learns the full truth or reasons behind what happened to her life, so would like have taken to drink or drugs in order to cope, would probably have become addicted and with drug debts (probably from Jesse's low rent former associates) and ended up on the game, then finally in prison, where she would have been used and abused like hell, and either just commit suicide or go through a gradual transformation like Jesse did. I would actually have rather seen a sequel like this than a prequel about Saul Goodman. Bonus points if she moves to Gotham city and becomes a female Joker.

    Yokai Na, with her husband an FBI agent killed on the job, there would have been pretty good compensation...plus life insurance. Middle class folks don’t usually skimp on that. And she had a decent enough job herself, remember...it’s not like she was a housewife. I do agree, that she probably would have had a hard time dealing emotionally though...without kids to take care of, it’s hard to go on after a colossal fuckup like that.

  • @angie-tq4ew

    Yokai You're not giving Marie enough credit. She has her own job as a medical tech, and makes good money. She would probably blossom without Skyler's judgmental influence, and Hank's abrasiveness. She doesn't have kids of her own, so she can focus on herself, which helps with her neurosis. I think she'd do just fine.

    This one and the other videos I've seen of yours about Breaking Bad are terrific. It's great to see this level of critical analysis applied to Breaking Bad cuz the show deserves it. You trace Marie's character so well, and the 'function' of Marie in the story, as "Walter White Lite", a comparing and contrasting between Walt and Marie. And also between the two couples. And you make a great case about what "keeps Marie tethered to her better side"--Hank's support and their love. Thanks for the wonderful commentary about my fave TV drama.

    I think Hank said the best possible thing when they find out Walt’s diagnosis. It’s the best a decent person can say to another decent person family member. But Walt is not a decent man deep down, so it pisses him off instead of relieving him.
