Breaking Bad - Cranston and Gilligan on Jane's Death (Paley Interview)

Ойын-сауық

Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston (Walter H. White) and Creator/Executive Producer Vince Gilligan discuss the multiple versions they had of Jane's death on the show.
In the first version, Walter gives her extra heroin, killing her on purpose. He gives AMC credit for being ballsy and letting him "get away with murder."
Bryan Cranston says the version he read (in which Walter helps her choke to death) really freaked him out.

It's so strange that no-one ever mentions Krysten Ritter in these. Her performance is amazing in the second season. It indirectly gave aaron his emmy's, her death and his reaction is what gave jesse lead-character depth. Where mr. Paul becomes the award-winning actor. Come on! Killing Jesse in the first season would have been a fucking collosal mistake. Sure, Jane's death was real brilliance to Breaking Bad. But if jane was still there... it's strange that no-one ever mentions krysten ritter.

Me too. I had a severe breakdown watching it (just watching now on Netflix) because my brother died the same way, last year. He aspirated on his own vomit, while high on heroin. It's the biggest loss I ever suffered. Watching Jesse try to revive her brought on some awful PTSD symptoms.

as a heroin addict, watching jane die was the single hardest moment of television history for me. i can't think back on that season without having an overwhelming feeling of nausea from just how revealing it is of that kind of lifestyle. i often feel like tv tends to glamorize violence and drug use, and i love breaking bad and amc for their frank, profound, and dark depiction of a world that many people do not understand.

Bizarre that their original approach to Jane's death was so direct...I think what they settled on works much, MUCH better. Not only is it more subtle, less overt, it's also more poignant: Walt is given a choice. Save her, don't save her. There's something more convincing in watching him teeter over into evil than having him jump headlong into it, as would have been the case with the other versions.

It's the nature of doing television shows, you never know if you're going to get cancelled next season. Sometimes that leads to rushing the episodes to get the story out there. Thankfully the show got all the seasons they needed and I guess at the end of season 2 they felt comfortable enough to take it a bit slower and less direct.

I heard in an interview that Vince Gilligan said the reason Jesse ended up in that duplex in the first place was that the home they had been using for him had been sold by the owners and they had to wait until the new owners had finished renovating the home (thus Jesse's parents redoing the home and selling it). I wonder if the character of Jane would have existed at all if Jesse's original home had not been sold?

Her death was a HUGE turning point in the show for both characters. Yes, in another story I would like to believe that Jesse and Jane lived a good life together. But in this show her life- and death- were major factors in the path that both Jesse and Walt took . Good Actress. Good Character. Not a waste at all.

That's whats so great about this show. It shows how a basically good man, thinking he will only go so far, cooking and selling meth, eventually via the slippery slope finds himself descending ever deeper into all the evils that man is prone to. Certainly a man as intelligent as Walter realizes that by allowing Jane to die, he had set in motion all the events that caused the death of hundreds of more individuals, even children, (teddy bear and its eye bore witness to that)

No. "Protagonist" and "good guy" aren't interchangeable. "Protagonist" literally means "main character" (that's why the term "villain protagonist" exists which is what Walt evolves into); the antagonist is just whoever/whatever stands in the way of the main character achieving their goal - the antagonist is not necessarily a villain. Walt is always the protagonist; the antagonists change over time but the full list is Krazy-8, Tuco, Hector, the Cousins, Gus, Jack and the rest of the Nazis, Lydia, Mike, Hank, Skyler and Jesse.

This just goes to show that the best TV is often made up on the fly. Going with the earlier versions - particularly Walt actually taking the time to cook up some extra heroin and then shooting her up with it - would have been ridiculous. They absolutely made the right call on that one. Another good one is that Gus Fring was created only because the actor who played Tuco unexpectedly left and so had to be killed off much earlier than planned. It clearly worked out better for all involved.

I second that. I think you're right that Walter White "died" in that crawl space (in fact, the way he's framed in that last scene, raving under the house, makes him look as if he's in a coffin). That's a nice observation and a definite turning point. It's when I think he became so desperate that he finally compromised whatever remaining sense of morality he had to escape his dire situation. It all makes sense, in a weird way, and is even understandable. Not that I excuse his actions, of course.

That's why I think Breaking Bad is so great. They are allowed to go to those dark, mature places. So many shows had so much potential but ended up really badly done because they are forced/not willing to make those big, dark moves. On the topic of Jane I'm not really sure how I feel. She seemed very controlling and somewhat manipulative of Jesse but I still really liked her character, though less and less as the season went on and she started showing her true colors.

He would have ended up shooting more heroin in New Zealand with Jane. She said they were going to throw away the left over drugs, but they shot them up instead. Indeed, in my opinion. And in almost everyone else's opinion, including everyone who actually works on the show. Don't get me wrong - I actually liked Tuco and I wouldn't have minded him staying longer - but the simple fact is that had that happened, Gus Fring as a character would never have existed (Gilligan flat-out said this) and the show would've been VASTLY different. Actually, in the BB "universe" Tuco and Fring must've known each other - I'd LOVE seeing those two having a conversation.

She WAS fabulous. 2 drug addicts falling in love so easily could appear too hammy or forced, but she and Aaron were a great pair.

Does that make him culpable? He didn't make her do the speedball.

You guys need to understand. Walt saved Jesse from having to deal with junkie vomit all over him.

@ethanB612 This is a show, not a movie :P And I know what an anti-hero is, and Tony Montana and Daniel Plainview are not anti-heros, they are villainous protagonists; much like Walt. And yes, breaking bad is original and inventive. I have watched every episode, on AMC, as they premiere and own all the DVDs. I know this show. I was originally saying my Dad gave up on this show when Walt let Jane die. And yes, I believe up until season 4, you are supposed to like walt. But not in season 4...

You mean that Gus possibly WANTED Max to get killed? Is that what you mean by "manipulated the meeting?" Because I didn't get that from it at all. If anything, I think that moment completely broke him inside, to the point where he patiently waited 20+ years before coldly taking revenge for it. Hell, I even got subtle vibes that Gus and Max were possibly lovers, but none of my friends agree on that so maybe it's just me. 100% agree with you on Margolis, though! He did so much with so little.

I still don't understand why Walt letting Jane die is considered evil. Questionable without a doubt, but his whole motive in that scenario was helping Jesse so I wouldn't call it flat out evil.

I think that if Hank didn't shoot Tuco, Gus eventually would have killed him because he's Hector's nephew.
