I think this was pretty much the show's only example of truly going meta, of having something born totally out of audience response actually make it into the narrative. I have no recollection of the "Kevin Costner thing" for Bob Odenkirk ever getting referenced before the days of BB, and for good reason, it was a likeness he grew into with age. Younger Odenkirk doesn't really look much like younger Costner at all. But as it got later into season 2 and then into season 3 with the show gaining a wider audience (I myself didn't start with the series at all til the break between 5a and 5b), fans started to realize Bob genuinely did have a sort of uncanny resemblance to Costner now. It got brought up so much in the fandom, then there was a way for Gilligan to bring it into the narrative in a natural enough way, so he did so.

I disagree with the description of todd. Todd is not evil for evil's sake. He's evil: nothing personal. He is without question a sociopath, but they keep saying he "enjoys" pain/killing etc. I don't see that. He just straight up doesn't care, which to me is far scarier. He won't laugh or cry as he kills you, he'll just kill you like it's no big deal and move on to the next thing. To Todd killing is literally not a personal act, he doesn't have an emotion attached to it and doesn't understand why others do. Which also represents a deeper level of Walt's decent. By the time Walt gets to Todd, he's almost numb to murdering people, Walt at that point is ordering hits on people, as part of business not even really as a life or death struggle.

Todd creeps me out so much. When you first see him, he seems like a regular, friendly guy. He's an easy-going person who probably has no trouble making friends. However, after he kills that kid, you realize that he is entirely devoid of human empathy. To him, there's no difference between going on a walk and murdering an innocent person. He commits murder with the same casualness of somebody tying their shoes. He is able to mask how evil he is so easily because he genuinely doesn't believe that he has done anything wrong. He has no conscience

for me, it became clear that walt is just straight up evil when he decided to let jane die. even though jane is just a minor side character, that moment described walt without a lot of dialogue. but yea, it was the worst death of the story for me when mike got killed. even before i started watching better call saul, you can just tell that mike is still a good guy and you want to root for him. aside from jesse, mike's my other favorite character. super cool and badass, and intelligent and wise and excellent at reading people. in my book, mike had ONE giant mistake, and it's in better call saul. when he agreed to take fring's offer and HIS NAME became officially connected to his business, that was his big mistake because that's what really got him in trouble in breaking bad. if he was never officially employed by gus, the cops never would have bothered him or his money in the bank, and he wouldn't have owed a bunch of killers their money and the money for his granddaughter wouldn't have been exposed. he wouldn't have had to go back to lydia to get walt what he needed. mike should have just kept on the sidelines and NEVER mention any money to gus in the first place.

I think the analysis of Gus leaves out the fact that he goes on his twenty-year revenge spiral solely because of his partner's murder. He's the embodiment of a corporation, sure, pretending to care about his employees before violently disposing of them, but in the flashback we can see that once upon a time, he was capable of love. At his core, he's a character who's been so utterly damaged and warped by grief that he's lost his humanity, instead becoming the embodiment of capitalism.

Reminds me of how one of the folks behind The Wire TV series described a criminal character named "The Greek" in the show. He was quite a big-shot, ran a shipping company shipping goods such as bulk-quantities of coke, humans, organs, etc. and obviously had folks killed from time to time. The writer described him as pretty much as you said there, "the ultimate embodiment of capitalism". Basically EVERYTHING was "just business", morals didn't enter the equation, if it made money and he judged the risk to be acceptable he was fine with it. He was actually a pleasant enough person, like he obviously had some gravitas since he was a powerful kingpin, but he was quite a refined old gent, the few times he was actually in a speaking scene too.

I'd consider Todd more of a sociopathic evil. He never kills people without reason, even if those reasons are pretty thin, but he never shows malice toward people or behaves sadistically either. Killing people is just, something you do. No need to feel bad about it. I'd suspect from his personality and look that he's likely on the spectrum slightly as well. Meaning that he doesn't understand the full weight of his actions. That combined with him simply not caring, and you get cold yet brutal Todd.

I think that what makes Todd the so evil is that not only he doesn't feel anything, good or bad about killing and torturing, and he just does it, but that somehow he feels different from those bad people around him, to the point where he sees himself as good and compassionate. He helps Lidia going through a lot of dead bodies because she doesn't wanna see, he has a crush on her, but never refers to her sexually or disrespects her, refuses to get paid by Walt when he hasn't learned the meth's formula yet and brings Jesse ice cream when he cooks a particularly good batch of meth... While having him prissioner in a hole in the ground. His morals might seem absent, but they are insanely twisted. This is what makes him kill a kid and feel okay with that because, from his perspective, he helped his partners. And this is why I hate him more than I hate any other character.

Yeah I also disagree with the description of Todd. Todd is the detached evil. He's not sadistic, but rather he's detached from the evil he commits. The evil he does is to achieve some other kind of end. For example, shooting the kid was to protect the job crew. And much of his actions are due to being a part of his uncle's gang and him just doing a job. But the evil he does has no empathy whatsoever. No guilt and no justification, as if it was some unremarkable thing. It just doesn't register to him, as long as it isn't foolish.

It's interesting how we meet Tuco so early on in the BB story. He's so off the rails and violent that we get desensitized to everything that happens after his death, even as Walt and Gus commit acts that are far more egregious than Tuco ever committed, even though they are mostly calmer and more deliberate than Tuco.

I wonder if the character's name was specifically chosen by the writers, as he seems to be dead inside by the time he is introduced, and since the character comes from a neo-nazi uncle, and the German word for "dead" is "tot", it makes sense.

Like a damaged child who never learned the boundaries that exist between right and wrong. And I guess that could be seen as evil for evils sake- but I feel like the childishness of the character and his devotion to his Nazi uncle paint a picture of abuse and inherited generational evil . However, your interpretation of Todd is very different to my own, especially when you say he "enjoys" it. I can't say I agree with it at all. Personally, I think that he doesn't consider whether he enjoys it or not, he just does it. He is a talented, yet impressionable young man, who happens to admire those experienced in the evil world. Whilst his backstory is never really revealed, I'd imagine that supposedly "non evil" people bullied him in the past, yet the evil ones took care of him, and for that, his only focus was on impressing those who look after him, and has zero moral codes in order to achieve that acknowledgement. Just how I view it, personally.

I'd say Todd should be categorized as "Detached Evil". He's not eager to do evil things, but he is very quick to do it if he thinks it's necessary for the business he's in. It's not personal, it's business which is why he's so dangerous. He's able to detach himself from any emotion he has toward the vile action he takes. Walt essentially becomes that form of evil himself which is why he takes Todd on as a partner when Jesse quits. He can trust Todd to what is necessary for their business, no questions asked. It makes me think of when Skylar tells Walt that she doesn't want her children to live in a house where dealing drugs and killing people is just shrugged off as "shit happens", which is exactly how Todd thinks of his murder of a child; shit happens...

ASOFAI has so much to explore for them. As it reminds me of the Witcher franchise, I wonder, if they have anything smart to say about that too. Seriously, they had the best written game characters.

@@stevennorris7181 I don't think so. TW1 came out a decade before I read the first ASOFAI book and even if they came out in the same time, TW-franchise is based on books which are certainly even older.

honestly, mike's not even evil. he only hurts people who are already involved or those who aren't innocent. he's more on the scale of "the best of the bad guys" in my book. kind of like why killers who kill other killers aren't in the same league as those who kill because they just want to kill. walter is more evil than mike. not only would he have good people killed, he'd do it in a manipulative way too, like how jesse was the one who killed the other chemist. not to mention, walt is the kind of guy who would let jane die and consciously decide NOT to help her so that he could get back jesse to his side. yes he was trying to get jesse to be clean and sober, but the main thing is that he needed jesse to still work for him. mike would not do something like that. mike would have anonymously called for help and maybe even try to resuscitate jane. heck, mike would have let jesse go if jesse wanted out in the meth business. mike is right when he said that there are bad cops and good criminals. that's how people really are in real life. it's not a "practical morality". he was never confused about who has good intentions and who has bad ones. mike actually was the best at reading people. he knew that jesse is basically good-intentioned, and that walt is the evil genius in the literal sense of the word. being able to tell that a cop can be bad and a criminal can be good does not make you evil. it means you have an intelligent and humane sense of right and wrong.

I'm surprised on how hard you missed the mark on Todd. He's not a sadist. He couldn't care less what his job is as long as he feels it is the proper thing to do in his situation. He is evil due to accident of birth, that he was born in a family of criminals, but his personality is irreverent of any distinction between good and evil. To Todd, all work is just work, and he takes nothing personally. He has no personal investment in anything, even his own family. After Walt murders his entire family, he's not even mad. Todd's character is of complete sociopathy. The only thing that matters to him is that he feels he is doing his job. He's a natural minion, or employee. He's not the type of guy to create a bunch of schemes, because there's nothing he particularly wants other than to be seen as a valued employee.

I know many people talked about why they disagree with this interpretation of Todd. I'd like to add that every evil act he did was to please either Lydia or Walter. He agreed to take Jesse hostage and torture him so they could continue cooking meth in order to keep Lydia around. He shot the kid because he thought Walt would thank him for it and consequently earn his respect.. When Walter kills his entire gang, Todd really doesn't seem to understand because, to him, everything he did was justified as an act of "love" or "respect". Todd embodies on a more visceral level what Walter became as Heisenberg. A boy subjected to an indifferent world who has to become just as indifferent in order to survive and get what he wants. "I did it for my family" "I did it for you, Mr. White." It's the same lie, just told differently.

This is an aspect of the show people often don't talk about. Most of the character's were villains to a degree. They enabled and pushed each other to further break-bad as time went on.

I love how you personified Gus as "Corporate Evil". You said that, "A corporation is a group of people that is legally viewed as a single entity. Gus is what that single entity would look like if it came alive as a man." (slight paraphrasing) Wow, that's heavy!. They never taught me that in my MBA classes. In law, a corporation is viewed as an immortal person. It has most of the rights of a human being. It can sign contracts, write checks, be sued, sue others, etc. It can't vote but it can make campaign contributions.

Gus spells it out here: "I will kill your infant daughter", etc. This is what Mike never understands - Walter doesn't just take out Gus because of his "pride" or a desire to be a "big man", he does it to erase the man that hovers as a constant threat not just to him but to his whole family.
