40:30 You guys ascribing morality to Gus just because you like his character is hilarious. He's a criminal ladies. Being good at being a criminal doesn't make him ethical. He was "doing business" Yes, he was. Just because you didn't see the extent of his brutality in the realm of the show doesn't mean you should fall for his neat veneer of respectability, like the characters in the show do.

Lydia's desire to eliminate those 11 people is a lot like her calling Mike Dwayne and wearing giant sunglasses: it's an action that's superficially prudent but ends up drawing attention and making her less safe.

I like their breakdowns of what they see, think and how they feel. However, they are now moving into the territory of telling the audience how we must feel based on their thoughts/feelings and either I'm misunderstanding or their egos are seem to be getting out of control. I'd advise scaling it back just a little and don't judge your audiences for how they think or feel about particular events/characters in the shows they watch. 🤫

It's a feeling of frustration at the leaps of logic that shift the blame from everyone else to Walt. Removing all accountability from other people making their own decisions. Along with the sympathy they shower on other people. "Poor Skylar, Walt has her trapped." - He signed the divorce papers. "Poor Gus, Walt destroyed everything." - Gus literally plotting to have Walt killed all season. "Poor Jesse, Walt played him." - Jesse is the one who attacked the drug dealers. "Poor Mike, Walt is dragging him back in." - Lydia is the one with the hitlist. It gets frustrating hearing the one-sided argument.

@@thedarkemissary Walt's ambition causes everything. It's like the finale of season 2, he didn't cause the plane crash, but he did let Jane die, which made her dad depressed and lose focus at work, which led to hundreds dying. He may not be 100% to blame, other characters make their own choices, but he has at least half blame for almost every bad thing that happens in the show. Walt's reckless choices have consequence, innocent's suffer. It's not really their job to present a fair an balanced argument, it's just their opinion. Skylar made her choice before she knew Walt was a dangerous killer. Now she's trapped Walt could have just kept his head down, and let Jesse die for his choices. Kept making money. Walt is literally the Devil to Jesse. Constantly manipulating him, he let Jane die and poisoned Broc. What Jesse did to those dealers doesn't matter. What Walt's done is evil. Gus and Mike are in the game, they make their own choices and bear their own blame. However, from their perspectives Walt is a pain in the ass and selfish. He gets Gale replaced by Jesse, just so Walt could save Hank from Jesse pressing charges. Jesse gets into problems with some of Gus' street dealers and that leads also Gale dying, which eventually leads to Hank investigating Gus. Mike makes his own choices also, so I don't blame Walt for that. From Mike's perspective Walt is super obnoxious. He killed Gus, which exposed their criminal conspiracy to the police, got everyone arrested or under investigation, and everyone lost their source of income. Walt's plan to destroy the laptop led to the DEA finding their accounts, which led to their money getting seized, which leads Lydia making the hit list.

So I've been a fan since BB was still on the air and over the years I have seen almost every view and perspective possible from this fanbase. So please trust me when I say that actually yes, I have seen TONS of these toxic masculinity bros that genuinely excuse every single thing Walt does. To be clear, these guys don't love Walt DESPITE the bad things he does, but they will actively argue Walt has never done anything wrong. - - - LATER S5 SPOILERS - - - . . . . They will say stuff like "well he made sure the poison wouldn't be enough to kill Brock" or "well it wasn't him that shot the kid". Every one of Walt's actions always have some angle they can justify and spin it with. The most outrageous I've seen are the guys so in love with Walter that they got furious at Jesse for "snitching" on him when he helped Hank. If you want to see a perfect example, go watch RT TV's Breaking Bad reaction videos for the final episodes. One of their guys on there is so hardcore pro-Walt and anti-Jesse, he was actively rooting for Walt to kill Jesse in the finale of the series (I guess for snitching?). You act like Walt taking care of the laptop was a stupid idea because it was encrypted. First, how would he know it was encrypted? The only one that might've known was Mike, so why didn't he speak up? Second, encryption can be broken, but it takes time and resources. Depending on how important the information is would determine if LEOs want to deal with that. As for Walt wanting to continue to cook meth, as he said he's in debt, and just because he's in remission it doesn't mean his previous cancer won't come back, or a new one could start. So his need for money still makes sense. In fact the only one who doesn't need it is Jesse, so why would he want to risk things?

@@KublaVeruca Yep! Plenty of antiheroes elsewhere, but not so common in serialized TV at the time. I'd be very interested to read about the difference between the Sopranos and Breaking Bad's audiences. One being on a "premium" channel versus one airing on cable (as well as being huge on Netflix, which had a virtual monopoly on streaming TV at the time) gives me the hunch that the two shows reached different audiences. Basically, that many people watching Breaking Bad hadn't been prepared by the Sopranos to truly understand an antihero character on television. But that's a hunch and I'd love to read some real studies about it.

Two things regarding reactions to the criticism of Walt. First of all "you don't know how writing works" is bullshit. Just because the writers believe they are depicting something does not make it true. Death of the author. The fact that the writers are clearly trying to depict Walt as the worst does not mean they are succeeding, or the things that they believe indicates Walt is in the wrong, are objectively correct in denoting that. Second of all, while the law of averages suggests that in the thousands who enjoy your coverage of the show there are a few people who are unabashed Walt stans, in general, a lot of the pushback against the denunciations of Walt has to do with his characterization in regard to the OTHER characters. To wit, the narrative that Jesse, Mike, Gus, Skyler or Jane is objectively morally superior to Walt, or his innocent victim, or that Walt is the party at fault in their conflicts with him. Walt can be a piece of shit, and still be preferable to other characters. Walt can be a piece of shit and still the victim of another character's mistreatment. And Walt can be evil and completely to blame for the death of a character, and that character still be a piece of shit. More often than not, the defenses of Walt and his actions are not per se, but are pushback against the narrative that Jesse, Mike or "Daddy Gus" or even Skyler is the good guy in their conflicts.

I hear what you're saying, and I think your second point in particular is good. However I don't think they've argued that anyone else is morally superior - in general their commentary has been that he's bad at being bad, whereas others are much better at being bad. He's also the main character, so he's naturally going to be the focal point of their discussions and criticism. On your first point, somewhat tangentially related: I think for a lot of the backlash that can be seen in comments section, we can all use some practice in remembering that not everything is directed at "me" in particular. Know what I mean? Like if Maple says "you don't know how writing works", she's talking to people who don't know how writing works. There are going to be people like that in the comments. No one else has to take it personally. Of course there's some hyperbole there, I'm just pointing this out because I see this a lot on the internet where people can get personally offended about remarks that don't apply to them. I think it helps to remind myself I don't have to defend myself against someone who's not throwing punches my way. I think your comment is pretty reasonable but this is just something on my mind, wanted to throw it out there.

My take on the negative feedback you've received about your opinions on Walt: I remember reading about why Vince Gilligan wanted Bryan Cranston to play Walter White. Vince directed an episode of The X Files in which Bryan Cranston played a neo nazi with terminal cancer. He said for Walt they needed "someone you would simultaneously hate and feel sorry for, and only Bryan Cranston can do that." I don't think the hate comes from people liking Walt. It's not like they disagree with you. I think it's more from how Walt can't say one sentence without the two of you ripping it to shreds. You run the risk of missing crucial details because you're gagging at the sight of him on screen. No, we as the audience are not exactly "rooting" for him anymore. That's true. He is overconfident, ambitious, and sleazy. That is also true. That last scene with Skylar was nauseating. I get that you are reactors. I get that Walter is a walking stack of red flags. But maybe try to understand his motives and hear him out until his next horrible moment? Trust me, for the rest of the show you won't have to wait long till the next one. Love your reactions and analysis, ladies. I'm here till the end, regardless.

Woth that said, its interesting how you immediately place a bunch of assumed talent and accolades on Lydia when the most important aspect of her character that we learn in her first acene is that she is a slimy liar and snake willing to kill anyone to protect herself. • @chrisadraheim

I think most of what Maple is saying is right, but I think the reason her takes seems so weird to a lot of people is that she's also missing some important pieces of the puzzle. It's true, the fans who think Walt can do no wrong are massively missing the point, but you also can't ignore that the elements that brought those fans to that position are also very present in the writing. The writers have talked about writing the show to appease both fans who loved and hated Walt, and the result is a story that is a bit open to cherry picking. I would say if you only view the show from one side or the other of that divide, you are almost certainly going to miss some big parts of what's there. Vince Gilligan mentioned in an interview that his 70-year-old mother, who he claimed would never have watched a show like Breaking Bad if her son wasn't making it, was still rooting for Walt at the end of the series. It may be at odds with the over-arching point of the greater point of the show, but that stuff is there, and the show really is trying to make you feel conflicted, whether or not you actually feel conflicted. For most people it works, and you're not watching wrong if doesn't work on you, but if it doesn't you're probably effectively watching a different show from the people who do feel conflicted, and you're absolutely watching a different show from people who feel unconflicted but take the opposite side.

  • @chrisadraheim

    @chrisadraheim

I think the same can be said with regard to Walt's status (or lack thereof) as a mastermind. This is another area where the show gives plenty of evidence to cherry pick to support either side. However, I think the point is that Walt is learning to become the mastermind as the series goes on. Just like how the show is less interesting if Walt really is just doing everything for his family and the only conflict is whether or not he can earn money, the show is less interesting if Walt is ready to go toe-to-toe with Gus at any point before he finally does. These are things that are meant to unwind and unravel as the show goes on. I mean, the big reveal at the end of the season 4 finale shows us that Walt was masterminding more than the audience is let on to believe. You can point to the magnet caper as more Walt and Jesse buffoonery, but the fans love the buffoonery so you can't cut that out of the show completely. Also, the fact that the plan backfires isn't really because they're stupid and outmatched. Yeah, the laptop was encrypted, but even Mike didn't know enough to say that would be the case. Also, the "backfire" is kind of to Walt's advantage, since it doesn't lead directly to him and does put Mike in a position where he has to collaborate with Walt. Also, even with an encrypted laptop they could still find Gus's password somewhere, or guess it, or brute force it with software. And let's not forget that "Daddy Gus" makes mistakes throughout the show not unsimilar to Walt's. I mean, he's the one who tipped his own hand that he couldn't kill Walt yet. He's the one who knew Walt well enough to know how to play to his ego, but not enough to know better than to build his whole strategy around a guy as erratic and unstable as Walt. If Walt were that important to him, it should have been a no-brainer to sacrifice the street dealers that killed Tomas to appease Walt and Jesse. And, of course, his undoing is his petty personal desire to bully elderly invalid, which creates the opening to get at him that Walt had been looking for all of season 4. We also get that flashback of young Gus have a very season-1-Walt type experience. Walt's maybe not a Gus-level mastermind, but Gus had decades, Walt is lucky to have made it over a year with his cancer. His only option is the speedrun route.

Gus was a manipulator more in the sense of a criminal mastermind controlling events and people like pieces on a chessboard. Walt is a manipulator in a much more seedy manner: lying to his family, lying to Jessie and making him think it's his fault the kid was poisoned, pursuing his own megalomaniacal power fantasy regardless of the toll it takes on his family. So yes they both deceive people, but the way Walt does it is significantly more creepy and affronting in nature.

If you IDENTIFY with the idea of revenge more, it makes sense, but at that point, whether vengeance or pride is a more acceptable motivation becomes an amoral argument, and neither is more or less "better" than the other Again, it all truly boils down to "ew, I don't like Walt. ew pride" while not extending that same disgust for Gus. it's just blatant and has been throughout these reactions

Walt also acts irrationally many times, Gus is usually much smarter and more deliberate until his fatal mistake of visiting Hector personally. Gus is only more "badass" if you think being a cold, calculated psychopath is cool, and if you identify with his motivation more than Walt's. by the way, that cold callousness Gus shows is just as much of a front from Gus as Heisenberg is for Walt. both of their motivations are equally emotionally driven and not things to admire. both pride and vengeance are pathetic and weak things to be driven by. if you actually look at their behavior on paper, reacting this differently to their actions because of "vibes" is jarring and not based on any real meaningful information.

His thoughtless, impatient, overly ambitious, drive in season 2. His guilty conscience in season 3, seamed to make him a bit more rational, for a time, but then . . . The unnecessary panic attack mixed with unjustified arrogance that was all of season 4. However he does have every right to be confident in the business now. He knows that he can solve almost any problem. And regardless of what the DEA or Madrigal say, this whole thing is an embarrassment so they'll bury it.

Skyler, on the other hand, is such a bad person for not liking that about him or being loyal to him. She should be both submissive and happy. I like Walt, because he commands authority over his wife. The fans who rushed to the husband's defense after he very publicly harassed and stalked his ex wife, would justify his actions by saying weird isht like "he's fighting for his family". The whole time I'm just like, *"What!?* How are this many *that* insane irl?" That's straight up what Walter defenders remind me of when it comes to his dynamic with Skylar. I know a lot of it comes from just an natural hate that many of these guys have for the Skylar character herself, but I'm sure a lot of it stems from some inherent real life issues these guys have. I don't even want to know what these dudes are like with women irl. It's like they want Skylar to be some obedient tradwife, that just rolls over for Walter, and isnt allowed to express any emotion at her own situation in all of this. There is definitely a vibe there.

Walter White is a great character. A manipulative sociopath with all consuming ambition. Ruthless. Predatory. Flawed. But, a family man. hahahahahah . Though isn't true of most gangsters? And, what would arguably the best show ever, easily in the top five be without Cranston's WW? Just some boring ass procedural....
