In this video, Lloyd explains how to do a figure skating move known as the backward outside mohawk. This move has become a popular turn in recent years in ice dancing competitions. Popularised by couples such as Gabrielle Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, it is a useful turn as once mastered it is one of the easiest to perform cleanly in competition.

Thanks for this video......love the way you guys explain weight distribution and arm/shoulder placement. I found it much easier to go from R-L, than L-R, I don’t feel like I’m opening up enuf that way...unsure if it’s an actual physical thing, or something that will come with more practice on that side.....also could you do one on the Forward Outside Mohawk as well please.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm happy to hear you're finding the videos useful. Very one has a good side and a bad side. I'm a lot for comfortable doing a R-L than a L-R on this turn. I would prefer a right forward inside counter over a left forward inside. So this is quite normal. Because of this it becomes easy to favour the preferred side, but you must force yourself to practice the less comfortable way too so that do do not become unbalance. In time it will become more comfortable the other way too! I had a whole video on the Forward outside mohawk completed at the same time I filmed this video. Unfortunately the files got corrupted and I lost it all. I'll make sure I film it next time I'm in the rink making videos!

Oh it's so fascinating and detailed! Thatnk you for all the little things, really. Weight distribution for instance. I'm quite sure that if I manage to get this to work, it'll help me big time with feeling safe on backwards outside edge for other things, too. Maybe this is the way to work towards spread eagles. Because the feet need to be turned out but the backward foot placement is right underneath me, so I'm quite sure it'll feel less scary than trying to get weight distribution right for anything with my legs placed apart. That's so cool!

It is a move that can help you get more comfortable sitting over the backward outside edge. Some people find it intimidating at first, but in reality once you get the hang of it, it is easier than an outside rocker. Outside spread eagles can be scary to try as you're leaning backwards into the circle. You're correct in saying this can move can help build confidence!

@@IceCoachOnline Surprisingly, ever since managing backwards cross steps (what are they actually called, I wonder?), I suddenly managed backwards outside pivot. And that makes me confident to attempt other backwards outsides exercises. I've had tried those before with no result. It's really about finding the right "entry" exercise for yourself to unlock a chain of connected skills, isn't it! 🤣 When the body figures out the basic rules, it starts apply and combining them without a second thought. Getting to that point is like..... tryinto solve riddles. 😬 Thanks for helping me with solving mine!

Love how you talk about leaning back against an imaginary dome. I've used a similar kind of visual back when I was trying to master back and forward outside loops. I would always picture being stuck to and circling a pyramid at a fixed point somewhere on my shoulder blade (still do this whenever I find myself somewhat struggling with loops). Out of curiosity, shouldn't it be also possible to do that Mohawk with the free foot at the instep instead of behind the skating foot? I assumed there's always both, an open and closed version of each type of Mohawk?

Yes you are 100% correct that it should be possible! I have tried it before and it doesn't flow quite as possible when doing it to the instep. Also, I was wearing freestyle blades at the time and I stepped on my own blade! Which isn't ideal, you would be able to do It in dance blades better. I would also question whether it would be called in an ISU skating event! Only because the specialists don't see it performed like that very often, and as things happen so quickly they could miss it and then you've lost your step sequence level!

I think you mean Waltz 8. And yes there’s a back outside to forward outside step.

If you're referring to the Waltz 8, then yes - the last step is an backward outside open mohawk. Although, most kids don't actually know that exact name.
