I feel the same way. Im 41, and I love the generation I grew up in, we had REAL music back then. I also remember my mom taking us to the movies when this first came out. I watched this movie a thousand times and learned all the dance moves. The only thing I couldn’t do was the centipede 😂

If you're 41 then you were only 2-3 yrs old MAX when this came out in '84, making it impossible for you to remember. God I hate it when people make obvious BS comments on videos like these. Just say you grew up with it; all of the extra shit is just unnecessary.

When they made this film they unwittingly caught a piece of musical history and recorded it for generations of kids in years to come to witness a phenomonon which swept the globe. This was a very important time in music and dance and changed dance across the world forever.Even now you can still see the influences in dance everywhere and still hear the sounds in the music.Great film.

+zabibullahastarothbrigades whites are fearing that they are loosing their majority and cities, blacks are convinced whites hate them because of the older black generations and dumb fucks like bush and trump, and hispanics because blacks think they are taking all the jobs and taking over their neighborhoods and Hispanics think all blacks hate them because of that rumor that current hiphop has chosen to spread and being direct competing social grouos. I could be completely wrong though (i'm white and thats my spin, i think the current situation is shit though).. Maybe someone else can fill us in?

+logicone Sir you are totally wrong, especially the part about the older blacks convincing younger blacks that whites hate them, you can thank white racist cops who are killing unarmed black males for that,, for you to sit there and blame the older generation is totally ridiculous as a matter of fact the 80"a and 90"s was probably the best time as far as race relations this country had ever seen between all the races

Truth is gangs stopped stabbing each other after rap/breakdance hit the scene. Instead of fighting it out, gangs would dance it out. Alot of pride at stake. Therefore losing the dance collectively meant losing the fight.

Well said, bro. I'm a metalhead who grew up in the 80s as well. No matter what genre you liked (rap, metal, new wave, hardcore punk), everyone just focused on their own game and respectfully competed with each other without being overly mean or violent. That doesn't mean fights didn't happen, but damn people didn't kill each other over stupid shit then. Today, forget about it. Its no longer about the artistry, but rather looks, bling, empty posturing, ratings, etc. The 80s were great!

I personally think that the guy who invented the Roland 808 drum-machine deserves a medal and the person who made the 'clap' sound deserves a special mention... The time was post 'Star-Wars' a used future...computers and arcade games.. a technological-emergency and the music machines reflected our feelings at the time, it was all change and you were cool to ride the wave of that with art and music.

SMH... Take Y'all asses down to Crenshaw and talk crazy. See how far that gets you. Back when this BS came out, in the minds of media executives it was just that... Some BS. They probably got a bunch of losers behind the scenes. That's where Beat Street would differ. Harry Belafonte had enough sense to talk to the REAL PEOPLE and help build the culture.

My god the fashion back then was so out there and I love it! Wouldn't dress like that now, but I am greatful we had a time period when we could express these trends. It makes for great study on fashion.

This movie reflected not the east coast dance scene which was already doing advanced breakdancing routines, but the young west coast hip hop scene. I'm just glad they were able to represent. It inspired a lot of crews to get out there and do their thing.

Before ground work became a massive part of street dancing you had people locking and then pop locking. These core styles wound their way through a lot of crews and were instrumental in many dancers creation of their own styles. Shabba Doo was one of the architects of locking and infusing jazz dance and other styles helped it evolve into a more diversified base for building unique styles an routines off of. Boogaloo Shrimp could absorb almost any style and incorporate them into his routines.
