Bread Punch Fishing on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal

Alan's back in the hot seat this week, and he skilfully presents a host of tips and tactics regarding bread punch fishing on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, close to his home in Chorley. The Cadence CP2000 pole is perfectly showcased and Alan ends up with a lovely catch. Enjoy!

Hi Alan Barnes very good video. Gave away some top tips there, things we did years ago but kept it secret, lol Those were the days. The one about greasing the tip is a top tip. I used to slightly over shot my float so it just went under, then grease the tip so the grease kept it up in the surface tension. A roach only had to look at the punch and it went under. I kept that one secret almost 40 years ago. Also the No 12 backshot is a must. I sinks the bit of live directly above the pole eye and means the float will always cock to exactly the same place, a must for punch fishing. Without that shot that sinks the line, the line will float and the surface tension in the water will hold the float up slightly meaning you think you have got a bite on the drop. Out of interest what is the float you are using? It looks spot on. I should add that everything you do is exactly the same way I used to fish in matches for 27 years. From rolling the bread to groundbait preparation. In recent years I have told people how to fish the punch while I am bailiffing on my local stretch of GUC in Bedfordshire. Some try to tell me that rolling the bread doesn't work because they have seen other videos where anglers have said the Roach know the difference between a fresh punch out of a slice and a punch out of a rolled slice, lol As we know that is rubbish. The advantages of rolling the bread is it will never come off of the hook when shipping out. Or come of if a Roach mouths the bait. I have caught up to 3 fish on one piece at times which does speed the process up. As I said above Very good video. It is the first one I have ever seen that is almost a perfect copy of how I used to fish punch in matches and I will add my favorite method. Such an easy cheap method once you know how. I haven't matched fished for 20 years, but it makes me want to dust my old gear down and go down the canal.

Lots of good fishing here in Western Australia but, I long for fishing the Leeds Liverpool Canal. As a child, my mates and I would walk down from Horsforth, the excitement building as we crossed the Aire and approached the canal. Cannot replicate that excitement no matter where I fish.

Another great video from the Cadence team. I have never fished the Leeds Liverpool canal and it’s totally different from my local Grand Union. But the methods are the same as I employ but I don’t need to fish so fine as the Union is nearly always heavily coloured so 0.08 hooklengths are as fine as I usually need and 0.10 is normal. But everything else is the same and that includes the punch size. Usual clear instruction and commentary from Alan and beautiful camera work from Ian. It just makes me miss my fishing as I’m still too ill to get out so I’ve been watching loads of video’s in bed. Incidentally that slow baked crumb was a tip I got from Ian Heaps for when the fishing was hard many years ago. Keep them coming guys I need them to stop me going stir crazy. Regards Bill

wacomaco ocamocaw hi, in winter when it was pretty hard fishing and the water is clear, we didn’t want to over feed the fish. we used to blend the bread as best we could, in the same way that Alan did. To get a really nice cloud in the water without introducing too many particles, we would add a cup full of baby milk to the liquidised bread. We would mix it quite sloppy and throw in a small piece, the size of a Malteser every couple of casts (about the time that the cloud had gone) I would normally fish the whip to hand on the waggler Hope this helps!

Another cracking film, Mr Barnes and Chappy. Well produced and full of info. Could listen to Alan all day. As well, brought back great memories of working over in Chorley in the early nineties (and having to get used to asking for a 'barm' cake with me fish and chips - 'tea' cake over here in Batley.)

I fish the calder/aire navagation wich I always thought was the leeds/Liverpool canal until recently.. the leeds/Liverpool runs out the otherside of leeds I'm told .. its about 4 to 5ft deep like you said tho, iv been getting some real big perch but can't seem to catch any other species 😕 .. I'm gonna keep trying because I know they are in there . The perch go BIG. I had a 2lb 70z on a lure ..I need to be more patient I think abd fish bread as shown amd not maggot or worm.. Any advice welcome if you see this.
