Brazilian Rhythms for the Drum Set -Part 2- Samba
Here is Part 2 of a multi-part video series on Brazilian Rhythms for the Drum Set.
The subject of this video is playing the Samba rhythm on the drum set. I discuss developing the correct foot technique as well as how to play with the correct feel.
I also demonstrate many Samba rhythms from my book and talk about playing Samba with brushes. Finally I talk about using the push-pull hand technique to mimic the sound of the Pandiero , a Brazilian frame drum.

The equipment I am using for this series consists of:
Doc Sweeney Stave Drums in African Olivewood
20"x 16" Bass Drum
Toms: 8"x 8", 10"x 8", 14"x 14 flloor tom"
14"x 6.5" Snare Drum
Cymbals are:
Paiste Traditional 22" Light Ride
Paiste Traditional 20" Flat Ride with rivets
Paiste Traditional 16" and 17" thin crashes
Sabian HH 13" Regular Hi-Hats
Sabian 12" AA Mini Hats
Heads on toms are Remo Pinstripes on toms
Bass drum is an Aquarian Power stroke 1 head.
Snare is a Aquarian coated head
Microphones are a AKG C24 stereo overhead and an Shure Beta 52 on the Bass drum

I most add that i have never known teachers with such a vast knowledge of so many rhythms, she is extraordinary both as she plays them and as a teachers, i have no words, i admire her very much.

Nice. Are you mostly using ankle strokes on the bass drum? Do you find it less fatiguing with your heel up rather than keeping heel down?..thank you-

I am pivoting my foot from left to right. If you watch my foot technique video here on this channel you will be able to see what both my feet are doing.
