Something is interesting in Brazil, people thinks portugueses is our language, what is not true. It is of course from Portugual, but they got confuse and a little angry when I say it

Were you paid to say such subjective nonsense? Are you trying to act as some sort of "influencer"? If that's the case, you should say how many people are learning that language in on-line providers such as babel for comparison with the other languages that they offer. If that language is sooo niiice, why is it basically nonexistent at academic level? Does anyone goes to Brazil to learn Portuguese and get a real diploma? Not to mention that in its graphic form (writing) it is a total and utter mess that diverged a lot from its roots and became very difficult to learn for other romance language speakers and for English speakers... almost a creole language, you should call it Brazilian instead of Portuguese. Well, just give it a try and then make your own opinion.

@@sammalik128 Yes & no. I would consider myself far from 100% fluent in Spanish (since I’m born & raised in the US & my mom didn’t teach me that much Spanish so I speak Spanglish more often, but we live in a large Latino area so I get to practice a ton). I still study Spanish while also studying Brazilian Portuguese, but sometimes you do get them mixed up. The other day I said “el té está FERVENDO” (the tea is boiling) instead of “el té está HIRVIENDO” But if you get mixed up way too many times between the 2 languages, I’d suggest stop the one you’re less passionate about (Spanish) & focus on the other one (Portuguese). OR you can also study another language that isn’t related to the Romance language that you’re passionate or at least interested in so it’s much harder to ever get confused/mixed up (I also study a Indonesian & Haitian Creole semi-regularly because I enjoy them too). Sometimes what works for others might not work for you or vice versa, so maybe study both initially & go with your intuition afterwards. Best of luck!

@@sammalik128 I studied BP first for four years at Uni before teaching myself Spanish for another four. It really helps with understanding the nuances with Spanish, but there is of course a lot of cross-fading that lends itself to odd grammatical errors lol!

It is truly one of the most beautiful languages in the world in my opinion!! I hated the nasal sounds when I first heard it, but it grew on me and I now find it so unique and fascinating. It makes so much sense that Brazilian culture involves a ton of music, because the language sounds so rhythmic and bouncy, almost like you’re dancing with your tongue. Plus, Brazilian people are so incredibly friendly and hilarious!! I only wish I could meet more Brazilian people, so we could exchange our languages! Viva o Brasil! 🇧🇷

This was an amazing video. I loved hearing the history of this language! I’ve been studying Brazilian portuguese for almost 3 years now in university, and I got to study abroad in Brazil this summer. It is by far the most amazing country I have ever been to. The people, the culture, the food, and the nature are all phenomenal. I’m already planning my next trip back!

Brazil is such a beautiful country. I cannot wait to go back next year to see my fiancée. I went last year and this year. Definitely worth it. Portuguese is definitely a beautiful language.

I confess i Learnt brazilian accent . I am mexican. In that way of speaking i got angry and i felt emotions .by first time in a Foreigner language. I once lived in Brazil as a child, and I distinctly remember picking up Portuguese very quickly because the Kindergarten I went to only used Portuguese and nobody spoke English. i unfortunately lost Portuguese after I went back to Australia because at that age I didn't understand the value of knowing many languages and i refused to speak it anymore. I can no longer understand Brazilian Portuguese.

Pena que hoje em dia a gente não sabe Tupi. Mas, há muitos anos, minha mãe morou no estado do Paraná e ela disse que ouviu tupi em algumas aldeias indígenas ainda existentes.

Eu sou escoces e morei muitos anos no Brasil, principalmente em Sao Paulo. As palavras de Tupi nao faltam nos nomes dos lugares.....tipo: Ibirapuera: Itanhaem; Pindamonhangaba; Mongagua; Paranapiacaba; Carapiuciba....e muito mais. Enfim, saudades eternas do brasil a terra dos tupiniquim!!

Sei que muitos lugares e cidades pelo Brasil usam o tupi-guarani em seus nomes, e seria tão interessante de poder traduzí-los a medida que vou os conhecendo. I'm from Brazil and nowadays I speak Portuguese (of course) English and I'm learning French. I'm really in love with learning languages but I can say that Brazilian Portuguese is one of the most beautiful and complete languages there is and I would never chance my native language for nothing!

In Lusitanian Portuguese or European Portuguese we also use words with tupi-guarani origins specifically fruits and terms used in agriculture and hunting

There is a museum in Paarl, South Africa, dedicated entirely to the Afrikaans language, so the one in Brazil is not the only museum in the world in that category.

Yes indeed, and that's the first museum ever to focus on a specific language. The Portuguese Language Museum in São Paulo opened much later, namely in 2009. Not to mention the many small Esperanto museums around the world (I myself visited the one in Vienna).

The Celts used the word "breasail" to describe this island. soon, when the europeans arrived here, it was said in europe that the island of brazil was discovered. There is also the history of pau-brasil, but the magical island version is more plausible.

The present-day version of "língua geral" is spoken in the Brazilian municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Amazon) where it is nowadays an official language alongside Portuguese. That's Brazi's third largest municipality spacewise as its total area is close to 110,000 square kilometers or roughly the same size as Bulgaria.

@@Alex13724 Yes it was really nice and the weather helped, except on the second day when we got a deluge in the afternoon and early evening - which was not too bad after all since I used that opportunity to pay a visit to the Abba Museum :) Stockholm is very expensive but nice and worth visiting. I'll definitely travel again to Sweden to see more of the country! Where are you from in Sweden?

Não, é uma palavra africana, se usa lá, o significado nem era a luta em sí que era disfarçada em dança mas um local sem mato alto, um vazio que ocorre em mato, redondo que se reuniam ali, o própio solo tem regiões mais pobres. Tanto que confundem a origem da luta, essa luta foi desenvolvida aqui pelos escravos, não vem da africa.

Brazilian portuguese is such a wonderful language. Theres Spicy, criativity, variety and romance. I know what people say about french or japanese, but they really need to know about portuguese though. Portuguese literature so!! Its an out-of-body experience

Basta ir a uma biblioteca municipal. E também vê este vídeo do estrangeiro que sabe mais do Brasil que o gado que muge aqui, achando que consegue ironizar e criticar. Caso não tenhas entendido alguma coisa, começa por um livro chamado dicionário. Quando o entenderes, será útil. A palavra utilidade está lá, com as devidas explicações. Para ti, será difícil, a princípio. Porém, com esforço e analgésicos, conseguirás.

Olly, It's ironic that Cuba was named Cuba by Columbus who grew up in a small town in Portugal, called... you guessed it CUBA! In fact many of the places in that region were named by Columbus and they are all places in Portugal. He wasn't Spanish or Italian, he was Portuguese. I wonder what he sounded like? Where did you bring that from? I'm Cuban and that story you're telling is untrue, or at least that's not what we are taught in school or read in History or cultural books. The origin of the country's name is unknown. It could have come from a Taino or Caribbean word for water or rock but that hypothesis/affirmation of yours... Hmmm. By the way, he name the Island Juana after Queen Juana, Isabel la Católica's daughter

Eu sou de São Paulo e tenho bastante dificuldade de entender alguns sotaques do norte principalmente. Eles usam expressões que eu nunca vi na vida xD ótimo vídeo!

Eu sou do norte (Pará). No meu Estado tem 4 sotaques (1. Belém/capital; 2. Ribeirinhos; 3. Do interior; 4. O neutro. Tem um município chamado Cametá/e proximidades. O sotaque é tão característico que conseguimos identificar de onde a pessoa é.

Olly, the Tupi vocabulary goes all the way to southern Brazil. Many cities, rivers and expressions embraced in the language of the original peoples. I was very happy for your approach including languages of African origin. Thank you (PS. You have a great accent of Brazilian Portuguese)

Saudade is totally a Portuguese term. It is an expression of the Portuguese soul. The Portuguese Fado is an artistic expression of Saudade.

😮 Hoje em dia escola virou assistência… no meu tempo (anos 70/80) era muito mais séria. Estudei 100% em escola pública e entrei pra faculdade pública sem cursinho. Mas era assim: a meia tá errada? Volta pra casa! Chegou 11 min atrasado? Volta pra casa. Tinha aula de 2a a sábado, 6 tempos por dia. Inglês e francês obrigatório… se fizessem isso hoje ninguém terminaria o ano letivo…

We, the Caipira people of Brazil, are the descendents of the speakers of _Língua Geral Paulista,_ and the accent left by that language is now the Caipira accent of Portuguese. Its main marker is the retroflex pronunciation of the letter 'r', which for us sounds like the English 'r' rather than the vibrant Spanish 'r'.

Hello, Olly. My name´s Miguel, I am a brazilian portuguese teacher. So glad to see you talking about my marvelous language. Here it goes the meaning of Ipanema. It really means Ipa: water + nema: stinky. Why? Because the name refers to a very important iron plant named Ipanema Iron Fabric. It was built nearby the river Ipanema, in the state of São Paulo. The owner of the factory was José Antônio Moreira whom the title of Baron of Ipanema was given to by our last Emperor, Pedro II. José Antônio also owned all the land where Ipanema beach is. In 1889 he founded Villa Ipanema there and designed Avenues and Squares, some of which are still present in the region.

It's "Bossa Nova" my friend. You have a good taste. Let me suggest you a great artist of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB, in portuguese), it's GONZAGUINHA. You will have a lot of fun (and admiration for the poetry involved) translating his lyrics, here are his best songs in my order of preference for you to listen and translate: 1 - O que é, o que é? (the song speaks about Life, "what it is, what it is?) 2 - Explode Coração (This one has a GORGEUS poetry about love, when you can't hold it in your chest anymore, that's why the title is "Explode my heart" 3 - Espere por mim Morena (another love one, try to get the mashup with this song and another one called "Diga lá Meu Coração). 4 - Sangrando (another one about love, but he has revolutionary songs either). Enjoy. And he has more songs like those.

Hi Olly! First of all, wow! What a superbly researched and produced video. I'm amazed. I'm a Brazilian language teacher (I teach English and French as foreign languages) and I have never seen a foreigner present the history of our language and culture so well. Truly amazing work!!! 👏👏👏 That is precisely why I'm going to be so specific and "nitpicky". "Nordestino" is only a dialect in telenovelas, and it's an absolute travesty. Those are carioca actors putting on a fake accent that doesn't exist in the real world. No real person speaks like that. I'm sorry, but no two people from different north eastern states speak exactly alike. Your list was quite detailed. You have "baianês" and the very specific "recifense" (that is the dialect for only one city!) on your list, lots of variety for south and south east, but the rest of north eastern Brazilian dialect is listed simply as "nordestino". I have to say that to us, who actually live in the region, there is no notion of a "nordestino" dialect. You could include a few other varieties, like "paraibano", "cearense", "potiguar" and "maranhês", or just leave it out entirely. If a Brazilian person actually told you that there is such a thing as a "nordestino" dialect, I'm sure it was someone from either Rio or São Paulo. They tend to be quite prejudiced against us, northeasterners. No matter where you come from, they'll just call you "Bahia" or "Paraíba". There is no nuance 🤷‍♀️

Easy, easy. I bet you wouldn't know the difference between "gaúcho" and "catarinense" accents, or "paulista from interior" and "paulista from Vale do Paraíba" regions. But everybody will round it up to "sulista" or "paulista", and nobody gets offended. Let's accept that there are characteristics typical to the northeastern accents which are perceived to all Brazilians as from a person coming from the northern regions of Brazil. That's undeniable. I've never been there, so I simply cannot pinpoint any particularities, I try to analyse the nuances listening to the people I hear on TV, knowing where they're from, but it's very difficult. So, people, don't get offended so easily, we don't do this out of prejudice, you probably share the same ignorance about us that we share about you.

@@demmersXX I don't know were do you got the idea we can't tell apart gauchos and catarinenses. Most people can tell at least the general accent of each state. We are not, of course, able to discern very specific stuff, but it's perfectly manageable to know at least a bit of each.
