The USA has a literacy rate of 79% as of 2023, which is shockingly low. It’s definitely not 99%. In fact, 54% of US adults have less than a 6th grade (age 12 in the US) functional reading capacity. Programs to intervene and improve this across the US are imperative. As for Brazil, while their literacy rate is actually higher than the USA, I imagine their rate is also way lower than this video states simply due to the large swaths of indigenous populations and populations in poverty as some of these communities do not even speak Portuguese as their day to day language, (and thus may not even be statistically counted.) In the US, children are, for the most part en masse, monolingual, versus many of their European counterparts who are bilingual, for example.
