Turin, Italy, September 30, 2018 - Poland shut out Brazil 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-23) in a thrilling final of the 2018 FIVB Men's World Championship before yet another sellout crowd at Turin's Pala Alpitour to collect the third world title in their history, after 1974 and 2014.
It was practically a repeat of the previous final, when the Poles had beaten Brazil at home in four sets.
Led by an unstoppable Bartosz Kurek, Poland took the tight first set and then cruised through to the final victory in just 97 minutes.
Surprisingly, there was no game: Poland proved once again able to strap the opponents of their best weapons.
Impressive receiving by Artur Szalpuk and libero Pawel Zatorski neutralized both Wallace De Souza and Lucas Saatkamp, only conceding 2 aces and keeping an overall 69% reception.
The blocking line put veteran Luiz Felipe 'Lipe' Fontelez out of the match and forced coach Renan Dal Zotto to multple setter changes - which did not pay off, for once - and a tremendous Bartosz Kurek (24 points, 69% attack, 2 aces, 2 blocks) did the rest.
Brazil's most consistant contribution in the first part of the match was offered by Wallace De Souza (14 points, 61% attacking percentage), but the explosive opposite spiker lost his offensive pace along the match, being replaced by Evandro Guerra.
The Selecao once again tried their specialty, the dramatic comeback, thanks to two big serve rounds by Evandro and Bruno Rezende, but eventually Kurek killed the match with a big attack - the right ending for a spectacular Final Six by the Polish giant.
Poland are the World Champions for the third time in their History, while Brazil will have to try a new assault to their fourth title starting from 2022.

Kurek is a beast !!! When Poland came back against the USA in the semi-final and won 3-2 I knew then that the Poles were serious, focused and motivated. My only concern was that they might be emotionally and physically drained when it came to playing Brazil. After all, Brazil played three sets against Serbia. But no, there was no way stopping Kurek and company. Kurek would not allow it. Congrats to Poland.

we had big problems in second faze in Warna because Kubiak got sick and Kurek wasn't playing good at all so our coach had to make many changes and we lost 2 games but then bounce back when Kubiak came back for first game with Serbia.
Congratulations to our Polish brothers from Serbia, that was the best volleyball display I've ever seen!!!

Poland is truly deserved to be the champion . Amazing performance ! As for Brazil no body is expecting them to come this far ( after the performance in VNL and injuries of 2 key players ) but the fact that they prove everybody wrong show the world why they are No 1. Both team are showing that why they deserve to be respected and fear.

As a italian guy who lives in Turin :) , I'm really happy about this amazing match of Poland. I didn't expect a team so strong in technique and in mental strenght. Your current trainer built up a team much more solid than 2014. Congratulations!
Kurek is just on another level than any other player, especially in the semis and the finals his play was insane.
Poland have a team, and power to be proud off. Congratulations and Respect guys.

You're fired! Jak mial grać środkiem z takim przyjęciem xd przeciez USA waliło w nas tak, ze piłki szły pod sufit na 6 metr. Jak dla mnie to jest jednym z bohaterów tego turnieju. Bardzo mądrze rozgrywał z tego co miał w każdym meczu, a gdyby nie odpalał w odpowiednich momentach meczu z USA, nie wygralibyśmy tego spotkania...

Miał też dużo idealnych dograń albo prawie idealnych i bardzo rzadko grał środkiem... Drzyzga jest dobry ale nic ponadto to. Jak się ma takich Kurków i Kubiaków to to wystarczy. Ale środkiem za mało grał i to było widać.

A w samej końcówce gdy Brazylia nas dochodziła to głównie dlatego bo Drzyzga albo za nisko wystawiał albo nie tam gdzie trzeba było. Sobie obejrzyj jescze raz.

Rememer Wilfredo Leon will play for Poland in 2019... Gold olimpic medal will be ours! 🇵🇱 Almost all of our players are playing in Poland. Im proud that we have such a strong volleyball league. Congratulations for our opponents. Bartosz Kurek was just unhuman!

Kurek at this level, Leon at his best plus Kubiak, Nowakowski, Kochanowski (Bieniek) and Zatorski will make many teams shed many tears
Kubiak is so talented that you can’t predict his spikes. Brazil really hard to block Poland
that was brutal, Poles demolished them they were like tsunami great performance - I felt for Brazilians
Brazil and Poland are my favorite teams in Volleyball world. #Kurek #Murilo Congrats to both of you. Godbless

I don't know any thing about many players but I liked how he played so calm and focus all the games. At least that's what I've notice. MVP of the championship for sure.

This is different Kurek than the unfocus and temperamental Kurek that we saw after the 2014 world championships. Kurek was considered overrated because of how often he choked and got shut out compared to other top rated oppos. At one point he had the lowest hitting percentage of the oppo's in the top 10 countries like USA, Brazil, France, Italy, Russia, Canada, Iran, Germany, Serbia, etc. But this is the Kurek that can destroy every block and still bounce the 3 meter line.

In my opinion, Drzyzga should get the best setter award. I know that there are limits for a country, but he was playing the tournament of his lifetime.

Most of what I saw from Kurek before were 3m hitting lines (which were amazing) and some antics on the court (which were bad) so I had mixed feelings about him. But this whole tournament he was absolutely determined, calm and collected while at the same time hammering down the opposition. That’s a really well deserved MVP award for him, he and Kubiak carried when Poland needed it.

Poland was incredible in this final. But what to say about Brazil: 5 consecutive world championship final and 4 consecutive finals of the Olympic Games. No team from another sport got that done. I love my Brazil, proud of u guys

But volleyball is strong second. Still in many countries they don't even understand the rules of volleyball so it's hard for the sport to beat football which is popular everywhere.
