Brazil: Appetite for beef eats into rainforest | Global Ideas

First they burn the forest, then the cattle arrive and then the soybeans. The global appetite for soy and beef has been driving the Amazon's destruction for decades now. The consultancy firm Pecsa hopes to teaches cattle ranchers sustainability.

I think the idea is not that free-range is bad but it still can't be overdone in one area at one time. Too much of a good thing, basically. If the cows are eating only in one area, then the area will become damaged from an agricultural perspective and you won't be able to grow grass there anyways. For the health of the cows and the land, it's good to keep them constantly moving and turning over the pastures. So yes, it would be more controlled but it would still be more or less free-range.

Free range farmers in the U.S. use electric fences to contain their cattle on a particular stretch of land. These electric fences consist of a single strand of electrified wire. They can deactivate them and move them around with ease. I don't know how it would work on an area as damp as the amazon basin, but it might be worth checking in to.

there are cases in Brazil that by apllying intensive grazing, there are properties where farmers have up to 20 cows per hectare. There are a lot of farmers with 10 cows per hectare. That is possible with intensive soil fertilization and irrigation. Also that happens mostly in small scale dairy farms. But some large beef operations have 5 cows per hectare. The majority of properties have 1 cow per hectare and sometimes even less.

The competitors are trying to slow down the Brazilian agroindustry using the Amazon deforestation as a pretext. Brazil has one of the lowest forest and natural environment preservation index in the world. In terms of arable land, Brazil has only 8% of its land dedicated to agriculture. US has 18%. China 20%. France 58%. India 61%. Brazil’s ability to harvest two to three crops a year in the same plot of land makes it unique compared with other grain and soybean-producing countries. Brazil has about 12 per cent of the world's surface water resources and one of the most fertile lands in the world. Brazil is now a global agricultural powerhouse feeding one in every 4 people in the world.

@@pliniolscthe Amazon rainforest is the number one place on earth for photosynthesis and primary production for organic matter aka CO2 fixation. It’s impact and role in the global environment is so vital I cannot overstate it. (You can literally observe it via satellite by measuring solar induced fluorescence: which shows how active chlorophyll in specific regions is, you can google pictures of that). As a botanist it’s extremely concerning how fast the rainforests world wide, but especially in Brazil are shrinking, the global ecosystem can only handle so much of these plants to disappear. Not to mention that human grown plants could never restore their current photosynthetic activity.

"In an article recently published by CNN, George Wang, a doctor and professor at Columbia University and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, says that eating meat is the biggest cause of climate change, deforestation and resource depletion, and that, in addition to polluting the planet , contributes to world hunger, as it transforms an enormous amount of food into cattle feed. We cannot ignore that our daily food systems and choices can aggravate or reduce the climate crisis. It may seem strange that eating a steak causes so much environmental degradation, but the evidence for this impact requires an immediate measure: take what we eat as seriously as we take climate change and the future of the planet. A UN assessment for Agriculture and Food indicated that the livestock sector's contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions exceeds that of all modes of transport combined. In addition, the emissions caused by livestock are up to 250 times higher than that of legumes, per gram of protein. The effect of these emissions seems to be a difficult problem to reduce and even more to solve, but the great solution may be simpler than we imagined, as it is a choice we make every day: what we put on our plates. Also according to UN reports, about 80% of all deforestation in the Amazon is caused by livestock. In addition, meat consumption is directly linked to world hunger and poor food distribution; while almost 800 million people suffer from malnutrition, 35% of the grains in the world are destined for livestock. Studies point out that, while consuming products of animal origin threatens our collective future, causing a devastating impact on the planet, the vegetarian diet, which excludes products of animal origin, is the dietary pattern that saves more natural resources, such as water and land, and emits less polluting gases. Having the possibility to affect the climate and environmental crisis in a broad and decisive way with a single personal choice is something rare and very special. Therefore, we have a moral duty to choose and defend plant-based diets. It is not just a lifestyle: it is for our health, for our planet and for the well-being and survival of future generations. So if you care about the environment, know that adopting a vegetarian diet is one of the most powerful choices an individual can make to save the planet these days. Go vegan and start changing the world now!

@Mark Gil Rosales Animal farming wastes a staggering amount of food. The real waste occurs in animal agriculture. About a third of global cropland is used to grow feed for livestock, not people. If all crops were used exclusively for direct human consumption, there would be enough food to feed 10 billion people by 2050 within environmental friendly limits. Intensive livestock production uses about a third of the world’s grain, and two thirds of soya, maize and barley, undermining global food security. Feeding grain and soya to animals and subsequently consuming their meat and milk is less efficient in terms of energy, protein, and land use than eating the plants directly - especially since intensive animal farming uses high amounts of potentially human-edible protein to feed animals. A plant-based diet requires far fewer resources. Animal agriculture contributes to deforestation and land-use change, in this case, the conversion of wilderness into farmland. The livestock and fishing industries are partially responsible for the loss of biodiversity, decreased ecosystem functions, climate change, and pollution. The consumption of animal-based products on a mass scale decreases food security for hundreds of millions of people in the Global South who are negatively affected by the land-use changes necessary to produce these products. Their land is used to raise crops to feed livestock in wealthy countries, and their oceans are overfished to satisfy demand abroad, while they themselves frequently struggle to simply survive. Meat, dairy, eggs, and fish are, in truth, luxury foods that the vast majority of people do not need if well-balanced and varied plant-based diets are available.

Poor arguments, very poor.

@@purikurix , Some data on the mapping of the Brazilian territory: - Brazil preserves 66.3% of its native vegetation (1- 13.8% is in indigenous territories //// 2- 16.5% are government lands /// 3- 10.4% are integral conservation reserves ) - We use 30.2% of Brazil's land for agriculture (1- 8% native pastures /// 2- 13.2% planted pastures for cattle /// 3- 7.8% are crops /// 4- 1, 2% are planted forests) - 3.5% are infrastructure works such as highways, cities and other buildings For comparison, I will put the mapping of the USA: - 74.3% is destined for agriculture (1- 27.9% are planted forests /// 2- 29% planted pastures /// 3- 17.4% are crops) - 5.8% are infrastructure works such as highways, cities and other buildings - 19.9% are areas for preservation (1- 8.9% are protected areas /// 2- 2.3% are indigenous lands /// 3- 8.7% native vegetation and non-arable land) Other curiosities in Brazil: 1) Brazil has 83% of its source of electricity from renewable sources (I challenge someone to find a list of 15 countries better than Brazil in this respect) 2) deforestation from January 2020 to January 2021 fell by 70%. 3) deforestation from August 2020 to January 2021 fell by 21%. Anyway, I hope I managed to express my explanation. I used the google translator, so there must be some grammatical errors ... Thanks for your attention.

@@r77777ful I think we are both right. Though most degradation happened in the US before. The US and Europe have comparatively very bad environmental conditions. But saying that others are bad and therefore we can continue doing bad stuff is less of an argument (Tu quoque/appeal to hypocrisy). Reminds me of the prisoner's dilemma. But I understand that Brazil needs some more development occuring, just current trends, like burning forest for creating pasture and expropriating indigenous people or rather failing to protect property rights etc. seem not to be so nice and efficient things (by the way, I may call myself an „ethical vegetarian“). ところで、「日系人」でいらっしゃいますか?

False news !!! -Brazil preserves more than 80% of the Amazon rainforest. -Brazil preserves a lot, with 66% of the territory formed by forests. -The majority of Brazilian soy is not planted in the Amazon, it occupies the biomes of the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Araucaria and Pampa. -The soy from the Amazon is not of good quality due to the large amount of rain.

we should boycott products from countries that emit a lot of greenhouse effect. That way we would eliminate almost all European countries, from China and the USA.
