BRAW or ProRes? Which Codec Should You Shoot With On The BMPCC 6k Pro?
When shooting on the BMPCC 6k Pro, do you shoot in ProRes or BRAW? Is there a one-size-fits-all solution? Using footage shot in both we take a look at the variables in both.

Depends on your lens, and trípod use.
On the original 6k, shooting pro-res allows me to do 2k footage using the full 6k sensor. That is a little known killer trick.

That's fantastic and 2K is plenty of resolution to work with!
One of the best honest and clearest opinion about these 2 key recording formats in BMPCC . Your personality transmit trust ! That is your key in the production of your videos. Thanks!

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words.
Good video and info. Really shows some of the deficiencies of Pro Res. Braw just adds the transcoding step, to export Braw to Pro Res. I guess could apply a burned-in Lut to the pro res file to add contrast and saturation while in camera.

Thank you! What camera do you use? The BMPCC 6k Pro allows you to apply a Gen 5 LUT for monitoring. You can also apply it in the Camera Raw function in Resolve. So many options but I like it!

With all respect I will change the word deficiencies for differences, because with the ProRes option many people have created excellent jobs and well paid with the BMPCC. Is something make you make money and recognition is not necessarily deficient.
nice video ... great presence on the screen.

Thank you! I appreciate that.
BRaw cause I mess up up WB all the time and WB is not an issue to correct in BRaw

Agreed! Even if the WB is close it can often not be 100%. Thanks!

Thank you! I was thinking the same thing so great minds do think alike. I'll shoot some footage this week and have one up by the weekend or early next week. Thanks again!
I was able to pick up some used Blackmagic Production Cinema 4k Cameras for my studio. Would love to see a video about bringing in footage from one of those cameras into Resolve and beginning color grade. Awesome video. Thanks!

Super awesome Matt - thanks!!! The file types and importing, and how to standardized different file types in DR is something I need to learn a lot more of.... Well... I need to learn a lot more of everything but, one thing at a time :-p
Great video! I like how Braw works...I work with Davinci in h.265 4:2:2 10 bits and for editing I always use proxies and, even so, the PC does not work well when I work on color and some effects. It would help me to record in a heavier codec and have lower compression. But which one should I choose? Prores or Braw? (I imagine braw will go better with DR), but will it go very badly in Prores? I'm waiting for a lumix s5iix with prores and the Blackmagic Assist 12g monitor is worth a fortune! Then I plan to get an SSD and edit in Prores. What do you think about that?

BRAW will definiterly give you more options for not only color grading and pushing certain looks but it's great with pushing the lift/gamma/gain in either direction. On my Production 4K I prefer ProRes. I'd suggest when get that Lumix (and you must be super excited!) shoot both Prores and RAW in different set ups and see which works best for you. There were times I was surprised at how good ProRes was. Thank You!

For architectural interior vs exterior (strong highlights vs shadows) what you recommend, Which raw mode. Thank you

That's a good question. I would go with those if you have the card space and editing capacity to set it to Q0 or Q1. Either will give you more information than 3:1. Of course, getting your exposure right and using the histogram to gauge will help significantly. Cheers!
when u are in pro res what do you recommend shooting in video or film ?

It depends on the application: I typically shoot in film so I can get that log look to color grade later. If your any w quick turn around or if it’s for a KZread video I’d say video. The key is making sure your white balance and exposure are correct in video. It’s easier to adjust in film,
