This movie is "theorized" in the "Pixar Theory" that the witch is actually "Boo" from Monster's Inc. She learned magic and essentially had been trying to find Sully and accidentally went back in time. There is subtle evidence of this throughout the cabin she lives in. There are multiple youtube videos pointing out all of the easter eggs for this theory. It's pretty sound. 😁

Fun fact: They had to make a whole new code just to animate Merida's curly red locks for this movie and it's CHANGED the game of animating hair ever since. Sully's fur in _Monsters Inc._ was a similar story.

They created new programs ALL the time with many movie also for disney like frozen,since the beginning,pixar animators invented a lot of programs the last 20 years,that's amazing

Yeah, and then Disney had to do it again to handle 70 ft of thousands of guide hairs and their clones for Rapunzel. Between the two studios, they have tended to come up with some revolutionary new thing with just about every single film they've released. The two biggest being Pixar's render engine Renderman which is an industry standard, and the Disney creating the Principled BSDF shader that has become the de-facto standard material generating shader. And dozen more from each. Another big one from Brave was the procedural generation of flora and fauna to fill out the forests.

I just realized that in the scene where the queen tossed Merida’s bow in the fire, the bowstring only snaps once Merida walks away. This represents that the tension that’s been building between them has finally snapped, and neither of them can take it back now. How crazy is that.

I'm somewhat surprised by the response. Maybe you have to be of a certain mindset to be able to ascertain the story clearly. I have always seen this as a highly emotional film with a powerful message regarding reconciliation and family.

Same! I mean, they were confused about the simplest things and I was just like "how can you guys not get that🤯". And they missed so many things and all through I was just like "unbelievable". Their reactions were so completely anticlimactic, I kept wondering if they were simply watching the movie in bits and pieces and that's why they were so confused.

Yeah, strange conclusion. The issues were specifically that the mum was way too much into the traditions and making a "lady" out of Merida and she never really understood what Merida actually liked, or why. Merida of course was the misunderstood selfish child (like all children are to some degree). So when the queen turned into a bear she actually got out of the castle and "saw" Merida's world for the first time. This is where she actually realised and valued the other side of her daughter. So Merida was actually teaching her mother nature and how to survive and hunt. Merida on the other hand didn't realised or accknowledged her mistake and responsibility within the family. Though she had several moments of realisation. The first one was her speech in the castle when she realised that she was almost causing a war between the clans. She jumped in and was about to accept her role. Though this is where her mum did the first step towards Merida. So they solved problem number one together. The second realisation came right at the end just before sunrise. Up to that point she still blamed the witch for everything that happened and thought they just had to fix that tapestry to get rid of the spell. Simply the logic of a child. Straight forward thinking. Problem X solution Y. In the end when she thought she will loose her mum forever (like Mordu) she finally realised that she was actually responsible for what happened to her mum and actually apologized. This was the necessary realisation. So her mum, which was of course way more mature, was just stuck in her world and realised way faster what she did to her daughter. Merida had a way longer way to go. About the title "Brave", I kinda agree that it's a bit strange, though it ties into several aspects of the movie (the dad and the overall "warrior" theme, but also that it takes courage to admit your mistakes). In other countries the movie was actually called just "Merida" which I think works just as well.

lol i agree - had a contentious relationship with my mom growing up but my dad and I were always close. the dad in this reminds me a lot of him (lets his wife lead, is a generally happy-go-lucky/social guy...etc.), especially how when I was little my mom tried to force me into ballet and piano and gymnastics and my dad realized I was a tomboy and supported me getting into basketball and soccer instead.

Seriously. I've been having issues with my mom for years now (mainly about my sexuality & my mental issues) and it's sadly gotten to the point where I'm questioning myself and I feel like I'm the toxic one cause I know she really does love me and I her but she is starting to make me feel bad about myself. And I have ALWAYS felt a strong connection to Merida ever since I first watched the movie. Tho I must say that I find it ironic that the only sports I'm interested in/am good at are archery and horse riding 🤣

As someone who likes to consdier my relationship with my mother healthy, this movie makes me question it with the amount I cry over it lmfao

Really surprised you didn't get into this movie. Was it because it didn't hit the kind of tropes you were expecting it? Or you didn't sympathize with the teenager forced to marry? It's about a mother-daughter relationship and breaking from cycles of tradition/abuse. Like it may have been necessary or worked out for the mother to be married off to someone when she was Merida's age, but through the dialogue and how the clans behave, it comes evident that they are no longer living the times of the mother's youth when alliance marriages were necessary for survival. Then you have the contemporary theme of a teen rebelling to be their own person and a mother growing to understand and let go. Strained mother-child relationships aren't really explored in Disney movies at all. The mother is just killed off-screen so often, or made into a saintly figure who has nothing but pure and faultless love. This if hardly a perfect movie, but it's doing good work portraying both Merida and her mother as more complex characters who both need to make changes. While Brave might not be the perfect title, I think it sums up well what it takes to admit your own failings and try to do things differently from all that you've ever known.

When you listen to the moms tone and how she talks about her marriage, even she agrees she doesn't like her life. She talks about Meridia being like her and just sucking it up for the good of their kingdom. She was probably just like Meridia, but fell for what her mother taught her and tried to pass it down

A bit surprised that you didn’t see the changes from each character. It wasn’t about bonding, or anything like that, it was about Eleanor and Merida seeing the value of each other’s viewpoints and skill sets. Merida is a wild child, she like to fight and be out in the wilderness and the wild. She has knowledge of survival and nature, and Eleanor only sees that initially as uncultured and disrespectful to the history and traditions of their people. Eleanor, on the other hand, is well versed in history and diplomacy and all things cultured and civilized. She knows how to deal with people and bend them towards what she feels is best for everybody. All of this, Merida sees as boring and useless frippery to her, and doesn’t respect that her mother has skills that are just as useful as her own. The first night in the wild, however, Eleanor starts to see how capable and competent Merida is in her own way and begins to understand and respect her daughter. Merida initially takes this as a sign that she’s the one in the right, though, and doesn’t really understand u til they’re sneaking back into the castle that everything her mother has been trying to get her to learn are actually valuable tools. This is when they start to work together and come to an understanding of each other’s values and actually start to “mend the bond torn by pride” which finally happens when Eleanor gets physical to protect her daughter and make use of her surroundings against Mordu and Merida finally admits that she made a mistake and that it was her actions which brought all this about. The story is so much deeper than mother/daughter bonding and relationships, it’s about seeing worth and value in people who are different from ourselves on a fundamental level and being accountable for our own actions.

Fun fact: Pixar actually created a new software just so they could properly animate all of the 3,000+ strands of Merida's hair. Pixar really has great animation work like take a look at soul, wtf they're animation whenever they play instruments looks so amazingly accurate.

I feel that you guys were missing the point a little bit, the story of this movie, it's premise it's a lesson itself, it's like a story of folklore that you would find in Celtic fairy tales or nordic o Germanic legends like the Grimm brother's stories most of the time involving whimsical or magical and fantastical elements.

This movie is UNDERRATED. It's honestly amazing and is just so much fun

While not perfect by any means, Brave is definitely one of my favorite animated movies. And I've always understood the reasons people had for not liking it, but I've never once understood people being confused by the movie lmao. Like, that's just the one reaction that I've never gotten. I can't say I expected pure confusion from beginning to end of this reaction lol

I think their part of their confusion stems from expecting this to be like other Pixar movies. Roxy even says that at one point, that it's not hitting the same typical Pixar beats. It's not a unique viewpoint either. There were other critic reviews at release that said this was on traditional Disney territory.

Yeah, I also thought that the whole story was actually very obvious. By no means a brilliant film, but a film that had a definite lesson and some good story points (or so I always thought). I think it was one of the first Pixar films that didn't rely on the American view of the world, and as such it did not have the same attention given to it as later films attempting the same thing like Moana, Coco and Encanto.

The word “brave” doesn’t just refer to fighting or surviving difficult situations. It’s beyond just that

the fact that she was going to lose her mum is what made her change as she spent time with her mum she remembered all the things her mum did for her and she really believed she was gonna be the reason she loses her mum forever.. as someone who has lost their mum I get it

I think the triplets only changed back because Merida broke the spell by mending her broken bond with her mother. It's implied that the boys would also become bears permanently along with their mother if the spell wasn't broken.

Pixar films don't really do singing characters, background music and a theme tune, yes, but NO Disney breaking out into song. The lesson is take control of your life, take responsibility for your actions and listen to others. I wish Pixar was never sold to Disney and just kept to the distribution deal they had.

Whole narrative of this video is yall are just in pure confusion- mostly from focusing on the wrong parts i think. There's a lot in this film and there's just so much surface viewing. Since the mother's transformation- the shifting point of their relationship was already changing, peak point was the fish hunting scene and the announcement scene. I feel like the girl's commentary influenced a lot of the guy's- i mean who doesnt like finding nemo?😭

Like c'mon dude, toughen up a bit. You're clearly caving into wanting to please your guest like you're afraid of having a conflicting opinion, and at the cost of your own authenticity. And no reaction is enjoyable when the audience knows you're not being genuine, which is especially detrimental when that's what your whole/most of your channel is based on.

I’m from Scotland and I must say, I do love this film. The fact Billy Connelly is in it makes it 1000x better. It’s great to see so many details that make it feel like it’s really set in Scotland. Places like Glencoe, Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, Inverness, Isle of Skye and more. Only thing is, we’ve never had bears in Scotland😂😂

That seems to be a mighty big oversight. Bears haven't been in Scotland for 3000 years (per google). They should have made it a boar, maybe? The little boys would've made adorable boar piglets. There used to be wolves 17th century and earlier. That could've worked. Visited Scotland for a bit. You have a lovely home country.

The ominous tone of the Will-o'-the-wisp was purposeful, in actual mythology they are believed to be the souls of the dead that are malevelont in nature. In most tales they actually lead people to their demise, the movie although changing their purpose still held onto their ominous and unpredictable nature.

I actually really love this film and can watch it any day. The mom fighting Mor’du always gets me bawling because it’s not until her daughter is in trouble that her momma bear side comes out. Like not even when she was about to die did that strength show itself. It wasn’t until she saw Merida about to be hurt that she ripped free from the ropes to rush to protect her. Idk I just cry every time Merida screams and Elinor comes to help

Can I ask why this is such a weird premise to you guys? It's actually very similar to Brother Bear and most people seem to love that film without issue. All I can think of is that because it's set in Scotland most American audiences have no connection to the characters and the legends so that they are more willing to find fault in it. Whereas being Scottish I actually find it a very interesting story. Is it a great film? No, unfortunately not, but is it a good story with interesting characters? In my opinion, yes it is. It has elements of so many other Disney films, including Coco, with its idea of going against your family's expectations for you. Finding Nemo with the child/parent both learning a lesson element. Frozen with it being about familial love rather than romantic love, and as you pointed out elements of Moana's story. All of which came about after this film I have to point out. It also has a lot of similar story beats to How to Train Your Dragon and people are more accepting of that film than this (although I have to be honest and say that I do love that franchise myself.) Merida's lesson is that her mum does actually love her and isn't behaving that way to torture her, her lesson was to accept her mum has her own opinions and although she doesn't agree with them that doesn't make her mother a villain. Most teenagers have to learn that lesson. Maybe it's just me, but I saw the lessons in the story of how they both came to see each other as a person, as the real person they were rather than who they wanted them to be. It's about acceptance and when they both accept each other for who they are the bond is repaired. And "Brave" isn't about being physically brave, but rather having the bravery to speak up against your family or the bravery to accept that not everything will go your way and so on. Maybe I am just reading way too much in to it because of my own experiences in life, but that is always what I read from it. Of course, I might be biased about all of this, with it not only being set in Scotland but actually having genuine Scottish actors playing the parts rather than American actors putting on generic, stereotypical Scottish accents. I wish this film had been about when I was a kid. Merida is a very strong character who has a lot to learn, but who is not all about finding a guy, and she happens to have a similar accent to my own. I really missed out. And I know many a small girl over here who absolutely adore Merida. Sorry about the huge comment, I just had a lot to say about this one.

You really need to have a certain mindset to fully understand and delve deeper into the movie and the powerful messages it portrays. Brave walked so Coco, Encanto, and Turning Red could run. Me personally, I never fail to tear up when watching this movie. Maybe it's because I've had difficulties with my mom and we've both been through the same thing Merida and Elinor have. It's honestly a very important movie for every woman of every age

I feel like Brave is an underrated movie. I love the story and the growth we get with BOTH characters. And as much as I love musicals I was really happy it wasn't. Her brothers are adorable terrors and her dad...is such a dad. Telling the same stories over and over again, I swear my dad doss that now but he's now in his 60's so I get it. Also, as someone with curly I'm am so fucking happy she has curly hair and it actually LOOKS good!!! I definitely get the sniffles during this movie and I will watch it when I want some magic wholesomeness with a fuckton of bravery.

I love this movie. But I understand why you don't get what happened. The mom change when she spend time with Merida in the jungle. She finally realized Merida true personality because she can't see it in the castle. Merida change when she finally get why her mom wants her to marry in the ancient castle ruins. Apparently the relationship between her father and the lord's wasn't always peaceful, so her mother want to keep the good relationship using marriage. Her refusing this marriage might push the kingdom into turmoil. She didn't see that because she never think about it like that, she just think it her mother way of restricting her. But seeing the ruin made her realize the consequences of her selfishness. Her own kingdom probably ruin because of infighting. That's why she decide to agree to the marriage. As for her mother, she realizes that there's another way. They don't need to follow tradition and make their kids unhappy, they could just talk things over if there's a problems. As for why Merida didn't felt remorse at first, I guess because she thinks it was reversible. She definitely show remorse once she fully realize the consequences of her actions.

Here's what I don't understand. After the encounter in ruins, both Merida and her mother know it's not just a legend. There's real danger if you create a rift among a peaceful alliance, especially when there's possible magical shenanigans. Why does her mother suggest to Merida to tell everyone to break the old traditions? Sure, she sees her daughter's viewpoint and personality better now, but she also has an even greater appreciation for the very real danger of breaking the peace. Especially when the 3 clans are each other's necks just moments before they showed up. It's a very 'Disney' moment that all 3 clan leaders agreed to it, just because their kids were supportive of it. Their clan leaders could have easily been as stubborn as the queen prior to her transformation. They were clearly against it initially, despite the rousing speech Merida gave before about their important of the bond between the clans. For me, it's still a good movie because I saw it as a modern folk tale, which the same issues as traditional folk tales. One shouldn't analyze them too deeply, or you're naturally going to find some flaws.

I’m not a huge fan of Roxy in any of Greg’s videos. She always seem very negative and close minded. But I will still keep watching you Greg. 👍🏽

This is one of my favorite animated movies! So sad you didn’t like it as much 😔. I thought they started overthinking too much and focusing on the negative that they forgot or failed to notice everything that was good. Roxy really killed the reaction for me, her constant negative comments and questions kept getting in the way of enjoying and appreciating the movie “it’s hard feeling bad for Merida for being a princess” 🙄 off to a good start bashing the main character at the start of the movie! Greg seemed to enjoy the movie and commented he loved the music, the animation and Merida’s character but that was all forgotten in the end. ☹️

I love this movie a lot, idc if there is no singing at all or if it’s not somewhat similar to other disney princesses. The music pretty much makes up for that cuz they are all such bangers.

Not gonna lie, was getting pissed off at these two's reactions. Not necessarily because they didn't like the movie, but it seemed as if they had a lot of preconceived judgements about the movie just from watching a few scenes before actually giving it a chance to develop, like how the woman (don't know who she is soz) was saying "It's hard to feel bad for a princess" as if people in higher positions can't have it hard or their struggles aren't as valid or something. And how they seemed baffled that Merida wasn't immediately taking responsibility for turning her mum into a bear and apologising to her, which I actually thought was a very teenage response as well as an accurate portrayal of the human tendency to avoid accountability, which Merida does end up taking in the end. And how they seemed to keep questioning insignificant details or making stupid jokes throughout the reaction which was irking for me. It was just very anticlimactic and agitating responses. And it's pretty ironic of him to say this film's humour is tailored more towards children when they themselves have elementary humour, especially them repeating the typical trope of 'Americans making fun of other people's accents', which was tiresome and annoying to watch. Like if you're gonna interrupt the reaction to speak, you could at least offer some thought provoking or interesting commentary about the film, rather than making the viewer sit through stupidity like that. Overall just my feelings on this reaction. Wasn't a hit for me.

What’s cool is that the suitor who no one can understand is actually Scottish and he suggested he speak Doric which he had learned from his grandmother!

@@andromedaspark2241 I think that the main issue (for Greg, at least) was the lack of "adventure". Most Pixar films have a similar theme focused on "going on an adventure with family/friends to a new far off land or magical realm". He mentioned it in his review that he was disappointed that the main characters didn't really leave the castle or its grounds. He also complained about the lack of action scenes from the lead character Merida.

That's SUCH a superficial way of thinking it pisses me off. This movie has so many important and powerful messages. This is actually one of my favorite movies. I really love it. It's quite unique as an animated princess movie.

Brave is one of the best films Pixar has ever made. Strongest female lead, no bloody songs, no Prince or man coming to the rescue, a beautiful and realistic representation of a mother/daughter relationship, intelligent humour and a stunning soundtrack. I am astonished that you two didn't get it! Children managed to follow this plot when it came out. Not sure why you struggled. Also could really have done without Roxy's constant dullard, cynical, desperately trying to be funny but failing comments. Greg so many of your "co-reactors" ruin this channel. It's so much better, honest and more sincere when it's just you reacting

Since they decided to compare this movie to Moana I'm also going to compare some things since I find it interesting but he had such a problem with their apparently "sudden change of heart" since that happened with both Moana parents and with Maui her parents just accept her for no reason even though they didn't see grow and change or anyting and Maui comes back after their falling-out with no explanation at all just just ready to give up his hook all of a sudden When in this movie it makes sense because that's what it's like with a mother and daughter we fight and we get over it very easily they just need to listen to each other and even though they couldn't speak they came to an understanding and it didn't just happen in that one scene like they're trying to make it seem

Yes! I don’t mind new reactors joining, especially if it’s to help grow the channel but someone who tears a movie apart from the start and tries too hard to provide commentary that is neither funny nor helpful is not the way to go! I think Tara or John might of made this reaction a lot different…🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah... as soon as she said it was hard to relate to a princess with loving parents, I figured that the major theme would be missed. Yeah, teen girls forced into arranged marriages should get over it bc they get to live in a castle ha ha ha I actually like the guest reactors cuz its a nice change but sometimes the quality of analysis suffers due to different personalities

I cry every time the mother throws her bow in the fkre. That both kinda meant a lot to both lf them, and the mom immediately regretted it... We sometimes do things out of anger and apite and sometimes you cant go back from it. ):

Thus movie made me absolutely adore the Scottish accent.

Brave is personally my second favourite princess movie with tangled being my favourite. The music the voice acting and sound design and a story I really enjoy.

Not yall saying brave is exactly like Moana when brave came out in 2012 and Moana didn't happen till like 2016 or 17. If anything Moanas story line had similarities to Brave not the other way around.

If I'm being honest as someone who is Scottish, I would have much preferred if they adapted an already existing Scottish mythology story into animation, like the story of Beira, the Queen of Winter, for example. That story seems right up Diseny and Pixar's alley, imo, and would translate really well into animation and their already existing Diseny Princess universe.

I love Brave but I still feel like after the archery tournament it should’ve had a different plot. It’s fine and it works, but I don’t love the “Brother Bear” (Mother Bear?) plot. Especially when you build up Merida being a badass and exceptional archer. Basically I was expecting more of an action fantasy plot, she barely uses the bow again after the tournament.

I think what made this such a hit back in the day is that it was one of the first early animated movies where the princess got to be the hero and buck the system (tradition) of just being married off to someone you are forced to marry, rather than the over romanticized stories my generation grew up with. There have been some really great female hero animated movies that have come out since then that make this look pretty pedestrian in comparison.

This is my favorite thing (next to the beautiful animation) about this film. To me, this was possibly the first instance where I saw a strong Disney princess in 3d animation that was a badass warrior, and never obsessed over being in a relationship, from start to finish.

I’m glad Greg shouted out the soundtrack. I have the opening lyrics to Into The Open Air tattooed on my arm. The soundtrack is incredible.

She's not saying she'll marry herself ffs. She's defying the betrothal itself. Also, the witch's house was FULL of bears. Not that hard to figure out. Edit: Merida DID mean her speech about the betrothal. There was SO much emotion in that holy shit. And no emotionality? Her crying when her mum didn't turn human again was so emotionally packed that I'm starting to think y'all are heartless. Jfc. Also, it is well established at the beginning of the film that Fergus did NOT believe in magic or witchcraft. So of course he wouldn't believe Merida at first. And seeing the boys as bear cubs confirmed Merida's story and he was in shock (plus the greater threat of Mordu and seeing the bear who is supposed to be his wife kill Mordu to protect his daughter) that he didn't have much time to remark on the boys being bearcubs. It's a *FANTASY* movie and y'all are nitpicking so much. Like this movie made perfect sense and has as many plot holes and such as Coco or Up or other films. And her being into archery and being exceptionally skilled at it was literally so she Could shoot for her own hand. But she also uses the bow and arrow after that throughout the rest of the movie.

I think Greg might feel different after a rewatch , sometimes while reacting it feels like they are missing important dialogue and context. (May be I feel this way because it's just the YT edit and not the full patreon reaction.)

People get very easily hung up on the tapestry... but that is forgetting a line of the witch's warning. "Look inside" The tapestry isn't inside. The bond torn by pride was their relationship. Their trust/love.

So you pointed out that this wasn't hitting any pixar beats. There's a reason for that. Pixar decided to do a princess movie, and Disney did a non-princess movie (sort of, they kind of cheated). Brave, and Wreck-It Ralph. Was kind of an experiment to see how each would handle the other's typical wheelhouse.

As much as I love Roxy and Greg they just seemed to try and miss the message in the movie because they wanted the regular Pixar tropes but, that’s what made this a good movie it wasn’t really the same old story it was pretty interesting. it wasn’t about bonding or a princess not being happy with her life these are literally forced marriages that take place out of duty, and she’s still very young and wants to live her life her way and as a princess or queen you simply can’t do that it was about understanding first quote in Jennifer’s body said it best “hell is a teenage girl”.🤷🏾‍♀️ around this age you start to have alot of difference between a mother and daughter I know I did so this movie touched on that beautifully.

I’d say this movie was popular bc Merida was one of the first “doesn’t need a boy” Disney princesses we got and even though the archery is downplayed in the movie it was huge for little girls in toys and getting them into archery in general

Really interesting you guys didn’t like this one I love this movie having a tense relationship with family this is a really sweet story of them actually spending time together just as themselves, Remember her mum treats her as a failing student that isn’t doing what she should be so the change in the relationship is really nice

The mom realised Merida was truly unhappy when she had to go to a witch to change things. She aslo saw her daughter as a true princess that can lead when she spoke to the group. Merida took longer to change, because she valued her independace so fiercely, but realized you have to do some things for the family- sacrifice and fight, and not just for yourself all the time.

I love this movie! Merida is an awesome unique Brave Princess with lots of spunk and determination. 😊

"Life expectancy of 30" gets misinterpreted a lot. It doesn't mean 30-year-olds were considered senior citizens or that you'd have a mid-life crisis at 15. It's the average lifespan of every person, and in those days a lot of babies died soon after birth and early childhood diseases had a higher fatality rate. A mother (if she survived childbirth) could realistically expect half the children she gave birth to to be gone by the time her youngest was full-grown, that's why people had such big families back then. Individuals who made it to 15 or 20 and avoided accidents could expect a similar lifespan to today.

Fun fact, my cousin worked on this movie and got to animate her hair for a few scenes! Also I think the smoke from the cauldron and the horse too!

I just realized how much the mother cared more about Merida's betrothal compared to the dad. You would assume he would be all about establishing an alliance with another clan.

Meh. Well that was dissapointing. To each their own, but it's never fun watch a movie you really like with people who cynically pick it apart right from the beginning and never give the movies charm a chance.

I only realized a few years ago that this was made by Pixar, not just Disney Pictures.

have to say your reaction made me a bit sad, I love this movie so much, that Merida gets the choice for herself, that she's allowed to be a warrior just as the sons are... she's my favourite princess. And in the water, when mama bear is cleaning herself, she wants to be graceful even as a bear, that's why Merida smiles watching her... you guys just had your disinteressed hats on here...

So sad you both didn't really enjoy the movie. I'm quite a bit older than you both and I loved seeing this movie at the theater. The combination of Pixar with Disney Princess was a great mash up of the two. I agree that it may mot be the strongest screenplay but no less so than many princess movies. The dynamic in the mother-daughter relationship I think has to get you 1st in order to get the emotional pay off. Merida was the 1st princess without a love interest. She goes through the movie without mooning over any of her betrothal prospects. Instead it's a journey about mother and daughter learning about each other. Yes, that part of the story is a little rushed but that is the core. Elinor spent so much time training Merida that she only expected her daughter to be dutiful without asking about how Merida feels about what is expected of her. Merida wants to make her own decisions but does not express that until she blows up at her mom. Merida in typical teenage behavior doesn't think about anyone else except herself. We can see her strong character but she is still needing to learn the intricacies of interpersonal relationships. Where I have a propblem with the script was when Merida is in the hall trying to distract everyone. Merida's decision to initially try to say that she'll marry one of the sons seems to come from left field. Yes, Elinor diverts Merida's speech so that Merida can say she's going to break with tradition with ger mother's approval, however it leaves us without knowing if the betrothal was something Merida would have truly agreed to or if she was only being impetuous without regarding consequences yet again. Although I was bummed you both seemed to step by step get more negative about the movie I still enjoy listening to the reviews. As someone that loves animation, sci-fi and fantasy I'm glad I came across Reel Rejects. You're a welcome addition to my KZread viewing.

Yikes this reaction wasn't it. Totally missed many of the plot points.

One of THE most straightforward themes and stories and they sound like they just watched inception. If you didn’t like it just say that people. I’m confused how they’re confused 😂. They’re also scared to say they hated it and the pussyfooting around it in the post review was annoying at best. Everytime any compliments made she’s like “is it though” and he immediately retracts it like holy shit just say you didn’t get it or like it. Guess they wanted another Tangled? Country spanning adventure rather than a home turf family issue? Typical relationship plot again and A clear villain destined to die instead of a bond based plot? Even the clearly from the heart speech that was more than a distraction confused them…. This reaction was more strange than the movie to me. It’s fine to think it wasn’t as grand as you wanted it to be. First princess to not be a damsel in distress and they straight up missed that part to 😂

I've seen this this movie since i were younger, secondary school or so, But to recent years ago i just realized the type of this trope of this movie... It is about breaking fate - prophecy, a cycle which has been told again and again by elders, Especially in Norse Mythology and Greek Mythology about "you knew fate can not be changed" thing... the example for this type of trope are The Ragnarok in Norse Myth and recently God of War 4 So if you are Brave enough you can change your destiny... addition explanation for Merida is the film take place in old time Viking-ish age so, it is set the time for a mindset of "old people" to think new and changing stuff compare to nowadays mindset of all thing people thinking

33:20 This movie came out the same year as Wreck-It Ralph, and most of the reviews said the same thing you said. The Pixar movie felt Disney and the Disney movie felt more Pixar.

I do love the film cause sure merida has a good relationship with her mam and her parents love her but, her mother is very strict and a perfectionists and a bit overbearing which is the point. If you push your child to act a certain way and keep reminding them of their flaws and treating everything they do as "improper" you child will rebel. Its like Connies mother from steven universe. She loves her daughter but doesnt let her do anything or be herself which isnt good.

This movie never fails to hit me straight in the heart. I think it’s kinda like Encanto, in that if you can’t relate to the family dynamic then you won’t really get it but if you Can relate then it will destroy you

I really like this movie. It's obviously not perfect, but I enjoy it. I never really understood how people could hate it as much as they say they do. I understand not liking it, but I don't think it deserves the hate it has gotten and still gets. Like, I would more likely watch this movie all the way through rather than watch Shrek all the way through; and Shrek is pretty revered as a 'masterpiece'.

The part that always gets me is when she's thrown off her horse and cries "Angus?!" like I felt so bad bc we go to our animals for support and Angus didn't mean to but it was really hurtful :(((

THE MOTHER WAS THE TRUE HERO:She was able to keep her human agency, learned how to fish,catching them one by one like LeBron's free throws,she stopped herself when she almost killed her child (as a parent i can relate),but also raged out when her little girl was in danger, and was STILL able to walk her douchey daughter through the final speech..And Dad's only answer to everything was "KILL IT!!"😅

'Brave' is my favorite out of all of their films. I felt that they were leaving little hints all throughout the film for audiences to see the slow growth of both mother and daughter.
