I love that you picked up on the miscommunication aspect because that to me was what stood out about this album more than anything else! I feel it goes beyond accidental miscommunication though and (even though these are sometimes projections) is about the motives we choose to assign to people, which are sometimes nasty or mean or, well, just bratty. For me the song I resonated with most was Girl so confusing because (while I agree it's common for all genders) I feel like being unsure of whether you love or hate another woman is a fundamental part of being socialized as a girl and being pitted against other women since childhood because of misogyny. But also because sometimes girls just don't get along, and that's ok. It's something that I feel pop has shied away from in recent years with lots of artists focusing too much on an idealized version of female friendship and hyperfeminine aesthetics in ways that I don't always relate to. Another thing that I loved about this album was that the sequencing felt so carefully considered. With the two most lighthearted, going out partying songs being first and last like you said, and masking the deeper, more vulnerable feelings that come up in the middle, this feels very resonant for an era where we are encouraged to be casual and conceal / brush off deeper emotions as if they're not that serious. (In a relationship sense, I think that's also what Sympathy Is A Knife and Everything Is Romantic are about.) So it makes sense that these more serious songs like So I and Apple (which is really upbeat for maybe one of the darkest songs on there) are placed in the middle, and all leading up to maybe the most vulnerable of all, I Think About It All The Time. I think it's cool too that even songs earlier on in the album take on a darker meaning once you've heard it all, like Rewind. You initially think it's about the 90s nostalgia but does she want to Rewind so she can have more time because she thinks she's running out? The whole existential crisis of being late 20s/30 and feeling like everyone is either having babies or out at the club is so true lol and this album encapsulates that perfectly.

100% agree! Very true about downplaying of emotions and even down to how the songs were produced it’s such a contrast to what’s being said. I also think the lyrics were sort of…messy? In the best way! And that must be so liberating. I also can appreciate that with girl so confusing- I never like to assume anyone’s experience as that’s not my experience but I suppose this need to be proper and not have these messy emotions is an expectation which must be so draining.
