BRANSHOLME: We find out what its like living in the LARGEST Council ESTATE in Northern England.

In this video, we’re taking a look around an estate and area called Bransholme, which is most famous for being one of Europe’s largest council estates and hitting the headlines for a lot of the wrong reasons.
Some factual information on the area:
Bransholme is a suburban housing estate and one of the largest council estates in the United Kingdom.
Located on the northeastern outskirts of Kingston upon Hull, the estate's development began in the 1960s and was primarily completed by the 1980s.
Bransholme was intended to provide high-quality, affordable housing, mainly to replace slum housing in Hull's city center.
Bransholme covers a vast area, and its design features a mix of house types, including terraced houses, semi-detached, and detached houses, with a variety of sizes and styles.
The estate was designed with a "city within a city" concept, incorporating local shops, schools, and community facilities within its boundaries.
Bransholme was designed to be a self-contained community, with an extensive network of footpaths and cycleways separate from the road system to encourage non-motorized transport.
However, it has faced several social challenges over the years, including high unemployment rates and social deprivation issues.
Despite its challenges, Bransholme also hosts positive aspects, including its sense of community and efforts to improve the area.
For instance, many initiatives have aimed to reduce unemployment, improve local facilities, and tackle crime.
If you have any comments or feedback, please drop a comment below the video and share your experiences with the rest of the viewers, thanks.

Really creepy seeing the estate i live on being on a video 🤣 I think living here isn't as bad as other places make out and I'm not originally from here and wouldn't choose to live here if i could. There's some good community aspects and i have met some decent educated people from here. I can't speak for north bransholme (which is a little different) but for the east and parts around the shopping centre, it isn't a good idea to go out at night nor have a motorbike on show even locked. It will most likely get taken to biggin fields (like my friends did) and set fire or will get ridden around the shopping centre or taken to orchard park (which I've heard is definitely worse than bransholme, the things they throw at buses has required police to be on the bus at night just incase). Unsure where the house prices came from as everytime i look on zoopla for a house, it's almost always under 100k. Even the house we are in was bought for less than that in just 2019 and it's in good condition and a decent energy rating. Overall, if you're wary of the local issues and need somewhere cheaper to live near the countryside, it's not too bad. The high fences are strange i thought too but I've found them very necessary. One day i hope we move somewhere nicer. My partner has always lived here though and will find it hard to adjust without the tall fences, the concern for security is high here and engrained in the local culture

I was a copper in the mid-70's based at Tower Grange, before Bransholme gained much of its notoriety. It was reasonably civilised in those days but this is nearly 50 years ago and society has gone down the gurgler pretty much since those simpler times. Public high-rise housing is a recipe for disaster. Get a few nutters in and that's it, the block is a gonner... It was all well-intentioned by the city fathers, but very short-sighted. It didn't account for changing times of Hull, or any industrial city. I'm not sure any of it can be resurrected...

You have a tendency to profile council estates as hotbeds of crime by default. You're probably not entirely wrong, but part of it is due to its high density. If you sprawl those units in a linear way, same situation is likely to occur on a larger square footage. Just like hoods in America, where I currently live. And believe me, criminals owning cars adds its own challenges, aka drive-by shootings.

  • @ukexplored

    @ukexplored

    8 ай бұрын

I agree about density, and there are plenty of stats to back that up. It was either this video or my Wolverhampton one where I shared stats from a social study and crime was several hundred % higher in and around tower blocks in the UK. It just feels like the more humans bump into each other, the more friction builds up, and the more explosive situations occur, in simple terms, doesn’t it. Maybe utopia would be everyone living several miles apart from one another 😀

Bransholme has probably been worse in its history than it is today. The estate was far bigger when I used to visit family a lot in 80s.. 35,000. There was a network of maisonettes dozens of blocks ( Alcatraz) and more high raisers too. I think what gives the place a more foreboding feel is the isolated nature of the estate, almost likened to a social experimental camp rather than a regular estate. Very friendly people though, the sort that would give the last penny to a stranger.

@ukexplored I'm my opinion the people are great yes you have rough family's but they are just doing what they can to get by time harder now more than ever. Then you have the crime it is high in a populated area anti social behaviour mainly is what you see. The stuff in the background such drugs seems to be behind closed doors, yet you do get some of the zombie clowns now and then. Alcoholism and theft from shops or bikes and scooters that type of thing is witnessed daily. Council again in my opinion don't do much at all to revive the place but then again due to anti social behaviour, graffiti, rubbish and fly tipping. Stuff like parks and green spaces just get ruined so what's the point I guess. Can never have nice things. But in all a great community of people but more like a shamless (TV series ) type of community. Un fortunately they have been some high profile murders in recent years in and around the local area. Been within it and growing up around it, I know where to and where not to go and the type of people you can incounter in certain areas. Guess you need to be a little street smart round these parts. Any other questions feel free to ask.

I live in a high rise (not in Hull) and its ok if you're young. But its shit long term. Service charges are high and the landlord does as little as possible. Its too hot much of the time May to October unless youre on a lower floor. My block has 11 stories and 70 flats. Its too noisey both due to noise in communal areas and in the flat above me. No sound proofing and concrete homes are echoy so any noise is magnified. The lifts always broken despite the service charge. Our water pressure often goes and u cant even flush a toilet or get a drink of water. Landlord just gaa lights residents and ignores the repair issues to save money. They are quite woke. But being proud to be gay etc doesnt fix anything . Luckily most of my neighbours are ok so little break ins and the cleaner is good. ButI i live for the day i can move out. 😆

Most the crime is probably 50 - 60 lads lasses on the full estate , my area had the dk heads you'd know not to show stuff too. like 3 or 4 lads rest where ok . Each garth + street has a c*nt 😂and they're basically all best mates & they can smell an un supervised bicycle from a light year away .

So i am a B.H.E lad i grow up there my primary school was Biggin hill primary and then to Winifred holby. the only reason i don't live there now is i wanted to change my life. i was one of them little dickheads that was flying about on dirt bikes and robbed the dealers. the things i did and the things i seen was madness it made me fearless i have been stabbed and shot at. the police didn't use to attend incidents unless they had numbers of officers. in 2013 me and a mate got jumped where we was in a kill or be killed situation and some off the people that jumped us ended up worse of then we did. some people in the houses called the police and we got arrested. my mate ended up doing 7 years for wounding with intent i have a good solicitor that got me off a prison sentence. I plead guilty for 2 ABH 2 GBH AND 2 affray. it was in the front page of the hull daily mail and the daily mail from that day i now if i didn't change my life i would end up dead or in prison. i left hull a couple months later and only been back 4 times in that time to attend court and my brothers funeral. my stories are crazy and i can not really talk about most of it as it will get me in trouble.

I reckon you’re hallucinating all that. I lived in Bransholme for years, and although it’s a bit scruffy, it’s far from dangerous or gang-ridden, certainly better than many northern cities. I’m not sure there’s any organised crime, and only low-level drug dealing. Most of the residents I found were decent and proud of being born and bred in the area, if not hugely wealthy. Branny and Hull generally really aren’t that bad.

@@sam.p12345 yeah ok wish i was i wouldn't have been on the front page of the hull daily mail. i wouldn't have scars from been stabbed.. I lived on biggin avenue for 18 years. Before the flats behind the shops was built and the housing estate on noddle hill was built. and they is not really organized crime. mainly estate beefs. and dealers robbing dealers. the place has calmed down. i will try find my old phone and upload some of the videos from it showing some of the shit i am talking about
