I have the proud honor to say I was there, he was very entertaining and gracious, and is easily one of my favorite authors. On a side note he genuinely reminds me of Patton Oswalt. Oh, and I asked the movie question...

Yeah, i have liked him as an author for a long time, but he seems like a genuinely nice guy who cares for his fans. Never been to an author's signing or seminar, but if he is anywhere near me in the future, i will definitely go see him.

Mistborn 1 spoiler: How would Kelsier win in a deathmatch of all the characters when the Lord Ruler killed him with ease? I'd say the Lord Ruler would win, assuming he wouldn't hold back against Vin.

The word he's talking about is "telos," as in "teleology." I have no idea where he's getting the idiosyncratic "talos" spelling from. It's never spelled like that in philosophy, either in the Greek or English translations, as far as I know.

_Brandon is really bad at greek. The word is pronounced t e l l -- a u s. (Not tay -- los lmao) Telos. And then, that's not Plato, but Aristotle. See? Read Aristotle's seventh book of the metaphysics for more. Read it first thing in the morning when you wake up, it's like a shot of double espresso...._ _by the way, modern science was founded with the explicit removing of Aristotle's final cause... That is, the ultimate reason for a things existence. And yet we claim that science can guide us towards what is right!_

Mistborn is a steampunk story, it's not epic fantasy. I'm not sure why he always mentions that it is when it is not, it doesn't have much in common with even fantasy and very little with "epic" fantasy.

  • @lamentz27

It's not really steampunk, as that would require anachronistic technology that primarily relies on steam. I don't remember much steam technology, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary. Technically, the only elements that need to be present for Epic Fantasy is that it takes place in a world that is not our own, and it has a conflict between good and evil. Mistborn has elements of Dystopian and Dark Fantasy, but they're not mutually exclusive with Epic Fantasy.

George Pop thinks he’s referring more to the Oroginal trilogy of Mistborn as that’s pretty much epic fantasy

Are you talking about the Wax and Wayne books? Because I'm not sure why you'd think the original trilogy (which starts with The Final Empire) has anything to do with steampunk. I mean for one, there is no steam era technology at all in those books. The tech level is middle ages level at best. And the trilogy seems to be right smack in the middle of what "epic fantasy" is. "Fantasy" because, well, magic and secondary world etc. "Epic" because it is a battle between good and evil that by the end of the trilogy affects the fate of the whole world. The only missing ingredient I could think of is that many classic epic fantasies have a lot of travel in them, and Sanderson sets his stories primarily in cities. Again, by the end of the series there are characters all across the map in different places, but he definitely isn't that interested in writing about characters traveling from place to place (like LOTR or WOT). But I don't think a story needs to be a travelogue to be epic fantasy.
