  • @Shoptoolreviews

    Air or Cordless (battery) is really a personal preference. I like a battery powered impact, because I don't have to worry about a compressor or the air hose. However, many technicians that use impacts all the time still like to use pneumatic (air), because they are typically much lighter. Battery power is definitely delivering equal torque to air, at least in the 1/2" anvil arena. Thanks for watching.

    Should have used a laser thermometer to measure temp of a nut that was not touched and compared it with the nuts that you've used the impact on to tighten to specific lbs of torque this way we know that heat doesn't influence the overall results.

  • @Shoptoolreviews

    @Shoptoolreviews

    The nuts and bolts never retain the heat, since we're running a batch of 10. By the time we get back around to the same nut and bolt, it's been several minutes. The sockets and adapters heat up since they may be hammering on the bolts for 5 secs each, which is 50 seconds continuously. Thanks for watching.

I tightened them myself in fall by my car spec wich is 105 lb. ft. Eventually, I had to use a breaking bar. Could it be because I was using a smaller M18 battery from my old drill? It is about 23 wh which is around 1.3 ah. I didn't find any spec about what battery should be used and from my understanding the battery size doesn't affect the power, just the time.

    The battery size can affect the power to a certain extent, I've been told, but not as much as the time capacity. I could see using a 1.3 ah batter as an issue, because I used my 2 ah batter why my worm drive saw, and it definitely wasn't as strong as it should have been with a larger capacity battery.

    I was torn between getting the M12 3/8" stubby or this new M18 3/8" Gen-3 compact because I have both battery platforms. I watched your other video where you proved the M18 3/8" compact impact wrench can loosen 400 ft/lbs while the M12 1/2" stubby maxed out at 350 ft/lbs. Just think if the M18 were the 1/2" anvil, it might have been able to do a little bit more! To me, the other comparison videos where both guns drive in various lag bolts only proves the durability and overall power. Quite impressive for the M12 stubby in that regard. However, for working on cars, I would think most people prefer the impact wrench with the highest possible nut busting torque. For that reason the M18 Gen-3 compact impact wrench looks like the clear winner. I have looked at, in-person and old reviews, the previous Gen-2 M18 3/8" impact. That gun is actually already pretty compact and I have not found many complaints about the battery size getting in the way. It's hard to believe that gun can do 210 ft/lbs being how skinny the head is. I own the M12 Fuel 3/8" impact which does something around 116 ft/lbs and it looks almost like the same size. I already have the M12 1/2" stubby so I ended up purchasing this new M18 3/8" Gen-3 compact gun. I have to say the M18 is definitely way better looking and the ergonomics feels a lot better. I just plain never did like the way the M12 stubby looked, and as a lot of people have pointed out, it truly is top heavy. The M18 feels well balanced holding it in hand. For those who might think the battery on the M18 can get in the way, when you attach a CP 2.0 battery on the M18 and an XC 4.0 battery on the M12 stubby, the M18 is not that much bigger. If people with the Gen-2 M18 were already happy, I think they will be even happier with this Gen-3 M18 gun. My plan is to pair the M18 3/8" compact with the 4.0Ah battery most of the time and only use the 2.0Ah battery if I need to really fit it into a tight spot. I know the power is less with 2.0s, but it will probably still be enough for those rare times. In most cases I think the wrench will fit with the 4.0Ah battery and by using swivels and extensions, I don't think the battery protrusion is really an issue. I guess the best of both worlds would be to come out with a Gen-2 M12 stubby that looks like this new M18 Gen-3 compact. I wouldn't be surprised if that's next in Milwaukee's pipeline.

    socket sizes generally. 1/2" drive sockets are generally thicker, heavier wall and go to larger size fasteners over 7/8" but don't go small, like 7/16" or smaller. 3/8" drive are the opposite, they are thinner, lighter, shorter fit into tighter spaces and go to smaller size fasteners, like 3/8" or 5/16". It looks like 250# bolt removal is nowhere near it's absolute max. I'm curious how it stacks up to Makita's XWT-15 since they both claim to have around 250# fastening torque but yet the Makita is rated for 430# removal. It wouldn't surprise me if Milwaukee's can take it off as well but chose to de-rate the tool because it's unpractical at those higher poundages.

  • @Shoptoolreviews

    @Shoptoolreviews

    You are correct, 250 is not it's max; however, I don't think it has 200 more ft-lbs in the tank to match the Makita. We haven't tried yet, but that's our assumption. We will definitely find out. Thanks for watching.

    I have the Makita in question. I've used it for tire changes on my F150 and Jeep mainly, no issues. I also did the entire front end on the F150, full strut, steering and suspension components replaced. Had zero issues. Loosening or nut busting torque is almost always close to double the fastening torque. That's just physics. Easier to take it off then put it on.

    It is a strange question to rate the “weight” of this unit because it is basically a giant torque electric motor on the end of a handle- so yes, it is top heavy. I’ve had the chance to use it a couple times to remove tires and wheels and it works great kzread.infoUgkx4ynqaujg7rZKFapA8s29kTpRszJGa3-K There are three torque settings so that you don’t overdo it and strip a lug. Very happy with it, especially with the price of buying it as a bare tool.

    I can say from experience Milwaukee impact tools have one giant flaw. If you actually use them every day the batteries rattle and break at/or around the pins. Our company has thrown dozens of 1" rattle guns in the bin this year. Half of them have tape around the batteries to hold them on.

    Yes, on the larger 3/4" and 1" anvil impacts, these batteries take a beating. Especially when using the 8.0, 9.0, and 12.0 Ah batteries. To address this problem, on the latest 1" D-handle impact, they've added a vibration dampener and reinforced the battery slide. Thanks for watching.

    🤔There is no change in this device, this is not really the future of these tools, they will not be used until they can rotate at different angles and the battery is not close to the handle. ☝️Shrink and lighten with a few grams, which is not a special change. ☝️It is better to rotate from above, so that it can be used in places where there is no room for operation, these are electric, so it is very easy to rotate left and right up the handle, and rotate up and down, like a knee. ☝️. Is the future of smart design really in place !? Doesn't the engineers really realize that the heads of these tools must rotate !?🤔

    I just want to chime in and say that the torque value of the 3/8" Milwaukee 2854-20 impact wrench is NOWHERE near the stated 250 ft/lbs! I tried it in the junkyard with a fully charged M18 5.0 and then a 8.0 battery. Its max torque value was about 40 to 50 ft/lbs. I bought mine from Home Depot, and then returned it after I came back from the yard.
