1984 was a good year, I still had hair, hope and hearing way back then.

You know those amps melted a lot of 6x9's back in the 80's!

6x9's in the rear deck were awesome!

Pretty much they equated to an 8" sub in an infinite baffle or big ( quasi ) sealed box , so yeah , you could a lot of bass out of a set of 6X9's , more than the uninitiated would believe possible . Of course you weren't braking windshields with em , unless you got stupid and just set em on the deck and then hit your brakes ....

I'm sorry but forty years later I just realized I had a dozen 6x9's and no one ever said, "nice" after talking about them... It was a different time...lol

@@volvo09The bass was so good!
In 1988-1989 I had the Sherwood 70+70 running a pair of Cerwin Vega 12’s that was rated 200-300 watts and woofers back in that time were built for efficiency and it slammed. It was loud and played deep lows in an oversized sealed box.
@robsolf

I had the XA-1240Q bridged to run a pair of vega's. For a while I had a cheap box with half the ci they needed, and they still did great. Then I got the right size box and my hatch cargo room disintegrated with my eardrums. The vega's lasted a good while, but the surrounds eventually gave out. Pretty sure I got 10 years out of them, at least.

Same here bk 87 .. Had 81 Mazda 626 coupe 2 door two 15' Cerwin Vega . Great memories..
That was tons of power for the time.
Back When real power numbers were made. 🎉
I installed one for a friend, all I remember this many years later was how dynamic it sounded. Very impressed
I actually sold those back in the mid 80s at a small audiophile boutique home stereo shop I worked at for a couple years after high school. We sold high end home audio but Sherwood was our less expensive offering. So we carried a bit of the car stuff for a while. I did all their installs but car audio wasn't really our focus. I did like the Sherwood stuff for the price and quality. I still have a Sherwood home integrated amp and I still love it. In fact, my son loved it too and I had to find another one. LOL
It’s crazy how this amplifier is old and I was born in 1983 😮
Wow this amp was a beast for the time. Thats crazy power for early 80s
I had a Sherwood cassette deck in my pickup in the late 80's. It was fantastic! Very low noise and clean sound. Never gave me a single problem.
In 1988 I had a 1985 Chevy Camaro Z-28 which I had my first real audio system. Head unit, eq, this Sherwood amp running front, rear speakers and two 10" subs. The real good times.
This was my very first amp in 1989, was running 2 Pioneer TS-V69 6x9s and a Pioneer KEH-8686 in my 72 VW Bug. I was 18... ahhhh
Dang!! Old Sherwood still alive and kickin'. I had several friends that had sherwood amps in highschool, never gave them any troubles.
Some of those Sherwood amps from the mid/early 90’s had Targa imprinted on the circuit board! They were a step above the Pyramid, Jensen, and Thrust amps but no one would claim they were high quality!!

@anotheruser5654 I had a Sherwood amp, I believe it was rated at like 70 watts X 2 that was bridged on a single 12” Pioneer IMPP sub. This was in 1994. It was decent for what it was.
I had a similar looking nonane amp from 1987-(gosh I don't recall) with a hokey printed on response curve on the cover. I seem to recall buying it at Highland Super Stores. Highland was new in the Twin Cities market at the time and they were clearly trying their hardest in Best Buy's home state. It actually didn't sound too bad for an unrecognized budget brand. It drove a 10" DVC in an enclosure built from a cut down home speaker enclosure (Basically found a stripped enclosure being dumped at a local car stereo place, and used a jigsaw to cut away the Mid and Tweeter part of the box and then glued and nailed an end on the amputated remains. Budget build in the extreme :D
This littLe amp SLAMMS the low notes on my cLassic 1981 bmw e21 Alpina❤❤❤
Nice 🙂.. that amp cooked several sets of afs kricket domax 3 6x9s back in the day in my 85 escort gt turbo 😊
Back in the 80's that Sherwood 70x70 in the trunk of every chevy Impala in south Florida. You could fry eggs on it but it never died. Still have one in the garage right now
I had one of those running mids/highs and two Coustic amps running a pair of Redline 15's. It was loud for its time.
I Sher-would have bought one of those back in 1983! Over 180 watts continuous and 270 peak, not many could do that back then for that price. Maybe Rockford and Linear Power? (Except the price)
Wow, nice!! I loved my Sherwood back in the day. I never looked at the guts on mine. I always thought these amps had power chips like the old Sanyo 100w. In any case, I'm very impressed. They were very good sounding amps. At one point, I had it running a set of Kicker gold letter 6×9's on the rear deck of a Cadillac I used to have. Thanks for the strole down memory lane BigD!! 🏆🥇🏅🎖
This was the second amplifier I ever owned, I had it for a long time. I honestly don’t remember it being nearly as powerful as the dyno is showing!
I knew since I was in my 20's this amp was way under rated!! So happy to see it proven finally 30 years later. SALUTE BIG D!!!
I had a 4 channel I loved that amp it did the job I swear it did better than the newer amps I had
Hey Big D, when you finish with this amp if possible I'd like to buy it. Back in 1980's our local pawn shop also carried car audio stuff. I bought two of those & a 40/40 Sherwood also. Had the 70/70 bridged each going to some 8ohm Electro Voice 12's & the 40/40 gong to some 6x9 pyle driver 2ways. I had 2 Radio Shack passive EQs,one for the 6x9's the other for the woofers, there were no passive crossovers around here at that time. My friend moved to Brimerton Washington & I believe the car audio place he worked at was calle tape town, anyway he had me to send him the woofer's specks and he sent me the box specks. Forgot the exact dimensions but the port was about 4 inch diameter PVC tubing. I got about $8 worth of particle board & went to my old high school wood shop teacher & he not only made the enclosure but had it framed inside. I put it in a brand new 1989 Hyundai Excel hatchback. It was banging pretty good until I popped the alternator, not once but twice. I ended up going to a place called EC Re builders that rebuilt my alternator to a 90 amp output one. I then bought a Die Hard Marine Battery & a Phoenix Gold Battery Isolator to help the electrical out some. In my area (Gary Indiana) people were still using mostly EQ Boosters and Jensen triaxial speakers so I was way ahead of the curve & for at least 2 years I ran the city with them sounds. I know I got way too long winded here, but those were very special times for me back then & I would love to buy that amp from you if possible. It made my car well known back then. It's crazy that I was only pushing about 140 watts total to my enclosure but it sounded like a thousand back then, I was setting off alarms & was being heard for blocks, & just remember, I had woofers not subs, & I mostly played House music and early Miami Bass so the woofers for all intent & purposes were like subs back then compared to the 6x9s
That's a nice ol amp!
The "ventilated" amp cover reminded me about the first Rockford Power 1000 I sold. The customer said after he installed the Power 1000 no sound came out. When Rockford got the amp on the bench the technician stated the circuit board was covered in small pieces of copper wire, total cost of amp repair $1000.00.
Very nice pre-Urban audio Sherwood. So cool to see that thing go.
reminds me a lot of the very old skool Alpine amps!
I put in so many of these back in the day. They would never die. Bullet Proof, but kind of high on the distortion level.
That was a powerhouse for back in the day
I have that very model in my VW rabbit pushing two 12 MTX blue thunders. Wasn't crazy loud but it sure made my eyes blurry. Definitely a trip down the memory lane.
I still have one of these. Back in the day, used it in my 78 Celica liftback hooked to a set of Minimus 7s attached to the sides of the hatch area. No car subwoofers back then, you got what you got.
I still have a Sherwood 100w 2 channel receiver since the 80’s I bought new in High School. I’m looking at it right now that has powered (2) Cerwin Vega bookshelf 6 1/2 speakers and a powered Cerwin Vega 10” sub in my living room! Only thing new are the bookshelf speakers! The “Absolute” Best Receiver EVER!#Sherwood#Quality
Sherwood amps of that vintage definitely had a unique aroma when running. Like hot electronics with a whisp of magic smoke.

All of these amps def surprised me with the numbers , especially that pipe one lol. So freaking cool
back in the mid-80's I worked at a discount electronics retailer, and we stocked those same Sherwood amps, the amps were top shelf, but their head units were junk..
A friend of mine had one of these that had two 15” Pyle subs running off of one channel in a Ford Escort. The other channel didn’t work at all . The things we did back in the 80’s
Had one of these I sold on Marketplace last year, didn't think much of Sherwood from the 80's. I remember this amp in the 72 Monte Carlo I bought, seemed like it had a ton of power , and here is the evidence! Should have kept this one
Sherwood was always one of my favorites from those early days. Nice video man
Put a Sherwood radio in my car after my Blaupunkt got jacked. I was pretty impressed with that radio. Had it hooked to two Coustic amps, one powering a set of 5 1/4 and a small Kicker truck box with separate 5 1/4 and tweets, the other powering two 12s...Probably sounded like ass, but i was cranking it everywhere..
Back in 1984 the only stereo that I knew about was Blaster. Lol He was on TV Saturday mornings with the Autobots.
Blast from the past I had three of these on 6 Rockford Fosgate 6 * 9s
That's absolutely awesome. Sherwood always made solid shiz!!
Wow! I never would’ve thought!!! A+!!!
look at those giant heatsinks modern day amp manufactures could learn something from this amp
Dammm u just took me back to the 80s i had 2 of them
Awesome video and info
This was my fist amp. ❤❤❤❤
I ran a 70x70 on 2 15’s and I sounded great.
Someone had some Kenwood house speakers hooked up to this beast back in the day 😆 🤣
Excellent video Big D
Really cool
Holy shiznitz i cant believe it made that kinda power
That's some good power.
I had a couple of them back then. They were pretty good
I've been looking forward to this test since the u boxing a while back and I'm blown away by the numbers it produced! I didn't think it would do rated power, I was way wrong! These old school test videos are pure gold. Awesome video brother!

Sherwood,...Shercould ❤
Great video 👍 I really like reviews and tests of stuff which is even more oldschool almost vintage 😊 I also have a nice home HiFi amp which is from 1978 rated 70W by 2. It has been hardly used since 1978 , dad bought it back then , 15 years later I got it and now my son enjoys it since 2017 together with a pair of 3way speakers which feature 12” woofers in his room which are also from 1978 with first surrounds. Never changed anything and still sounds nice 👍 I plan a dyno and sound test video of that SABA made quality product “ made in Germany “ 😊
They aren't the greatest sounding amps at full range, but the dynamic headroom made them pretty good for subs. I had the XA-1240Q bridged to run 2 Cerwin Vega's and it kicked pretty good for the time. If you didn't have a ton of money, Sherwood was a great bang for the buck option.
Wow. I ran 2 Sherwood amps. with a Fultron crossover with 12" Fosgates. From 90-99. Still bumped hard until it all got stolen 😢
I had a late 80's BP series 100 watt pushing 2 Rockford 12's.
I had that same Sherwood amp. The amps circuit breaker would open and kill the power. My buddy opened it up and shoved aluminum foil to keep the circuit connected. Not the smartest thing to do back in 89 but that amp powered 2 15's with that foil! 😂
My guess those caps are better then most off the shelves caps of today, personally I wouldnt update the components unless absolutely necessary. Sone amp manufacturers would hand pick high quality electric components by metered sound spec longevity testing ect Ive know early USA Zapco did that, i could imagine what you got here is something of that quality. The layout is very similar or might even be a clone of copy of to the Sanyo not sure whixh came first. Particularly where the power supply section is separate with a grounded wall or shield for low noise floor. Zapco do that in the 70s with the 3 piece 151 amps they had physically separated upgradeable power supplys, for low noise floor and acourse boost power output.
Left positive is negative is wild!
Thumbs up for that Sher-wizzle...lol
Cool

Been waiting for this video... I had a Realistic amplifier that looked a lot like this back in the day.... It was a great amplifier and definitely a step up from the powered graphic equaliser I was using before it... I love the timeless classic look of this amplifier, definitely looks better than that poofy purple contraption in my opinion.... I am surprised that it exceeded let alone met it's rated output... But it's coming from that era when everything performed better than what they were rated for.... So it shouldn't have been a surprise.....
I had one of those in my 89 Camaro on 2 8 in Pyle subs
I was nine years old in 1984
I would love to see the Sherwood 240 can really do
Now you have a Before test, so you can do an After test and see if the new Caps added or subtracted power.
All my decks were Sherwood until around 94 then switched to alpine.. alpine had problems with eating my tapes
I had one of those on 2 mtx 15" pretty solid amp,i later got a linear 2202 for subs, pur the sherwood on some by 9s😂😂
In 1984 i wished i was an adult, now i wish i was back in 1984
Sherwood one of the better flea market brands back in the golden years of car audio hi fi unlike Pyramid, Rockwood & Kenford. $199 for this amp is equivalent to almost 200 gallons of " regular " aka Leaded gas.
At the time Sherwood was threading the fine line of respectability. They weren’t something to brag about but they had respectable performance and were good enough for a budget build. The chassis is a knockoff of the Alpine amps of the same period , which I ran in my system. It also uses spring speaker terminals like the Alpines, which probably would break like they did on my Alpine.
Big D, send in that warranty registration card! There's still time!
