BRAIN Rehab. Intensive therapy to improve my TBI symptoms.

Спорт

In the summer of 2020 I was hit by someone that ran a red light. I got hit in the drivers side of my pickup, sustained a concussion and whiplash. That resulted in a pretty serious brain injury and after a year of therapy I had to retire from racing in 2021. Recovery was going slow, and getting back to racing professionally was just not possible anymore. Luckily I got back into riding my bike and I was able to make some improvements over the past 3,5 years. I'm still dealing with symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, vertigo, neck pain and really would like to keep working on improving my symptoms. I've been following the Functional Neurology Center online for a while and decided to safe up money and go up to Minneapolis for a week of intense therapy! Intense it was!!

Thank you everyone for the support! The fans, my friends, family and my sponsors. It truly means the world to me and I feel grateful that I can still ride my bike and keep doing what I love... Anneke xo

Very inspiring! I also had no idea you still suffer from the TBI. Makes your ride videos even more impressive how well you recovered so far. I'm glad you found a place that can help. It's a shame the U.S. makes people have to decide between health and financial status. I wish you continued progress to full recovery. Thank you for sharing.

It is a mix of feelings, happiness to see you recovering and anger to see what an irresponsible person did to you. Best wishes for you during the rest of your treatment 👍

Fascinating! Great video! I was one of the Mojo knuckleheads who took your jump clinic at Huntley Gravity Zone, and you indicated that you were heading out for the treatment center very soon after. The clinic was awesome! I had no idea that they had treatment centers dedicated to this. The part I found particularly intriguing is that they have identified measurables that relate specifically to brain function deficiencies and that they can actually quantify improvement by monitoring them, such as eye spasms. Obviously, the bigger symptoms of neck pain, headaches, and nausea affect daily life, but I had no idea that they had ways to monitor progress with improving the things that lead to those debilitating issues. Good luck with the improvements! With your positive attitude and ambition, I'm confident that you'll get back to where you want to be!

Ms. Beerten, I applaud your courage to share your journey educating the rest of us. I shared this story with a friend whose life changed instantly much like yours and she suffers the subsurface long-lasting effects from injury that many can not see. Bless you for this post. v/r, Mike

WOW You are Amazing, Thank you for this open talk about your injury, I was out on a trail that I work on in Michigan a couple yrs ago at 75 yrs old, I was getting a good lap in when I don't know what happened, but the bike hit me in the back of the helmet, the only damage to the helmet was the dent in the lower left rear in the shape of a bar, I was out, woke up on the ground realizing I had double vision while wating for the motorcycle ambulance to take me to the road to the ambulance, I spent 4 days in the hoppital with a brain injury, blood on the brain, I slept most of the time, I went home with a patch on my eye so I could see non double, I actualy rode my MTB like that for a few months, I got real vision back after 4 months, (luckily) I go to the Ann Arbor VA hospital, they have been great, I'm 77 years old now, ride and working on trails, DTE Foundation/Poto, and the connector are the trails, over 60 miles, I still have problems with memory, but my eyes are good, I'm still riding fast but a bit more cautious, I have a 21 Epic EVO, gravel bike, Fat bike, jump bike, and a Opa Fiets grampa bike I ride in the neighborhood on errands.. LOL my Dutch Bike, I know you'll love that one.. !!!!! I'm doing great on the bikes, staying in condition by riding all year. Working on the trails, and even coaching a few people I call my grasshoppers.. You make me feel very lucky not to have more problems, I'm happy with the few lingering side effects, I can still ride and work on the trails, My memory keeps getting better, I do puzzles, and the biking is really helping me with my recovery, thanks for your story, I just found your videos, I will start watching more, when I get back from my ride today, Its springtime I'm riding hills now, trying to find my stamina, I know its out in the hills somewhere..;) I ride the biggest hills I can find in springtime. Thanx again, you are amazing, an inspiration ;) !!!!

The fact that you chose to spend your 6.5k on your future self speaks volumes. I appreciate your transparency not only sharing the uncomfortable situations but also the pricing for yourself. I am curious about the before and after results. You showed the eye spasms and inability to track. Did that get resolved with treatment? Could you perhaps share a video of benefits and possible follow-up therapy? I hope this effort paves the way for a longer, healthier future! Thank you for your time, consideration, and sharing!

Thank you, I appreciate it! Yes, my eye movements improved about 15%. Coordination has gotten a lot better as well. I’m still doing a pretty intense program at home right now and have a follow up within a month. I’ll keep you in the loop on how things are going.

It is very interesting to see this treatment. I was completely fascinated as I watched. Your sharing is greatly appreciated. I have family members who have had multiple concussions through high impact sports like hockey and mountain biking and I will be sharing this video with them. Your sharing this will help change the lives of many people. Smile, you deserve it!

In 2016 my good friend and main cycling training partner (that I rode thousands of miles/season with for years) took a header on a country backroad and ended up with a shattered skull (shredded helmet), many broken bones, died at least 3x, and was in a coma for several months. TLDR he isn't riding anymore but has come back enough to still play music together, he has taken up golf, and continues to improve albeit slower than any of us would like. So glad you are still improving, will continue to improve, and able to do amazing things on the bike including the fantastic coaching/clinics that have helped others (like me) enjoy cycling more than ever!

Thank you for your openness about your struggles and the cost of treatment. Post TBI- you must have quickly noticed that things were harder than before. If I may ask, did you fail any basic tests from the neurologist(s)? I’ve had a TBI and have diagnosed with mild neurocognitive disorder. Do you struggle with anything like that? Mostly, I have trouble finding the word or combination of words I want to use.
