    Sinatra was a master of being able to phrase a song. He knew how to split up the words of a song to make them more meaningful, fit the rhythm, and really improve the overall experience. He could make an OK song good, a good song great, and a great song a classic. He didn’t have the greatest range, but he more than made up for it as a genius at musical expression.

    I've been helping take care of my 95 year old grandpa one day a week, and we sit and listen to old LPs. Really blowing my mind how good they are. Patti Page, Patsy Cline, Frank, Gene Autry. Those generations of the 1900s made some amazing music.

    Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr...there are sooooo many amazing singers from those days. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, my parents mostly listened to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Queen, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Celine Dion, etc., but as teenagers in the 90s/early 2000s, my siblings and I were listening to...well...everything we could get our hands on! Oooh. Getting into Jazz and Blues is a great journey. So many great songs and messages out there. If you would like to dip your toes with a happier tune, try "Blue Skies" by Ella Fitzgerald or "Smile" by Nat King Cole. Also, one of the best songs IMHO to snuggle in a rainy day would be "Isn't This A Lovely Day" by Ella and Louis.

    They recorded the first take of this song, and Sinatra ended it with “Oh yeah!” The producer asked him to record another take. Sinatra was known as “One-Take Sinatra” because he could come in and nail a song on the first take. Having to record another take annoyed him, so he sang the second take with a bit of attitude in his voice, and ended it with a defiant “My my!” directed towards the producer. The second take is the famous one and why he has so much attitude in his singing.

  • @thomastimlin1724

    @thomastimlin1724

    2 жыл бұрын

    Then the producer did him a favor. Instead of TELLING" him to sing with attitude, [Which may have caused Sinatra to walk out as he was often known to be easily annoyed at any given moment] he MADE him sing with attitude by saying "We need a second take". Perhaps it was accidental genius, but worth it. Plus, "My, my" rhymes better with "July" than "Oh Yeh."

    Here is what I like about how the two of you balance out each other. Brad, you are a cognitive person and think deeply into a song's messages and lyrics. therefore, if a song message is a little weird, sad, upsetting, you tend to interpret that message inwardly deeply making it a little harder to enjoy the whole theme. I know because sometimes music effects me this way too. Lex on the underhand hears the same lyrics, but playfully handles them and able to enjoy a little more freedom in music expression. At times I do get in this mood especially with awesome instruments or voices in the song. That said: Lex loves you and laughs along with some of your expressions. You balance each out very well. And both of you add an enjoyable take on music. Keep the video's coming.

    David Lee Roth covered this song in his album Eat 'Em And Smile, and he did change the ending so it's a bit more uplifting ... I'd say, check that version out sometime :)

    This is the music my parents played when I was younger. Then they had to listen to my music. Sometimes they would saw NO! Now I see what is was like. I enjoy their old 78’s that I’ve kept all these years. I even bought an old Victrola that has the heavy cartridge to play them.

    Chairman of the Board. Saw Sinatra in concert several times when I lived in Cali. His vocalizing was impeccable. Soulful crooner with a big band sound sprinkled with intimate nuances of melancholy.

    Frank Sinatra, "Frankie"! A Legend, part of the famous "Rat Pack". Cool that you guys are doing Sinatra. Funny story about Sinatra, he was always thought to have Mob connections, and in the Godfather movie in 1970s there is a character named Johnny Fontaine. Johnny Fontaine asked the Godfather to intervene in a movie producers decision to use another actor instead of Johnny in this Big movie to come out. Have you seen the Godfather movie, and if so do you recall the scene in the beginning, when Johnny comes to the Godfathers daughters wedding to ask the favor? It was always thought this scene was based on a real life event with Johnny Fontaine actually being Frank Sinatra, and the Godfather in the movie was real life Mob Boss Sam Giancana,.. many to this day say it was absolutely true!

    Watching Lex loving this song makes me love it even more. As far as the ending, the whole point of the song (as you both mentioned) is the ups and downs of life-good or bad, we soldier on. And though the line is "roll up in a big ball and die," it's followed by a cynical "My, my!" Meaning you may feel that way in the moment-just like you did back in May-but as always, you'll soldier on. Cause that's Life.😋 I find it very inspirational, and comforting.
