Brace Restoration.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I restore and Old wood working tool and Stanley no 78 Brace. There are a few brace restoration videos on KZread but few go as far as I wanted to. I fully dismantled the brace and Nickel coated the parts.
Nickel coating is pretty easy to do
For great details on it see Geoffrey Croker's excellent video • Electroplating - Easy ...

This is probably the best brace restore video on YT yet. I don't think I've seen others take them apart to the degree you have. Well done.

Thanks man. No doubt the best bit brace restoration video out there. Nobody was willing to take theirs apart except for you. I'm working on mine right now and I have the exact same one you do. This has been a huge help. Thanks again. Subscribed.

This video came in handy last night when the brace head (or whatever you call part that you push against) I was using seized up and this is the only video I could find that showed how to disassemble that part.

WOW~!! You made a Silk Purse out of a Sow's Ear~! I have one of these all rusted up and could not figure out how I was going to get the handle off the curves and I would have never tried chiseling it into two pieces until I see you do it. Of course it won't be as pretty as yours but it was so much fun to watch a true craftsman at work to resurrect a beautiful tool that was used by real men of a greater generation~!!! New Sub here.

There are sets of punches available that will facilitate the removal of various pins. You don't need to (and probably shouldn't) use a nail for this purpose. Even a cheap Harbor Freight set would be better than a nail.

This gives me hope for the brace my stepdad just gave me. Seems to have all the parts but I was nervous on how to clean all the gunk off of it and inside of it.

A couple of sizes of bristle brushes (a toothbrush and a nail brush, or similar) and some kerosene, with elbow grease, can make a big improvement and make it useable.

I have 3 all charity shop finds and one is in a really bad way I think a previous owner used it to mix plaster so I'm really glad I found your video because the ratchet is completely seized up but I only gave £2 (UK) for it. I intend restoring it to useable working condition but I'm not going to the trouble of replating it, but hat off to you for doing a first class job.

Nice job on the resto'. I'm in the process of doing mine up. It's a very similar make but looks to be German made with small differences in its construction. The chuck assembly is pinned in place to the handle like yours but after removing the pin you then have to screw off the assembly from the handle! Also the rear round handle rotating mechanism is held in place by washers which are held in place with the shaft peened over a bit to prevent them coming out... Also the round wooden end handle is screwed onto the end then held in place with the 3 small screws. The entire thing looks to have been nickel plated since the old plating is flaking off. Not sure I want to remove the middle wood handle though it looks to be in good shape and I don't want to break it apart... Not sure if soaking the entire handle arm in Evaporust with the wood handle still on will ruin the handle...?

Thank you for this video. I have a 60 year old Australian-made 2-jaw brace I'd like to restore. My problem is, the head and the sweep handle are made of a thermosetting plastic, similar looking to Bakelite. There is _no way_ I'm going to split the sweep handle to remove it. So it will have to be a partial restoration at best. You did a great job with yours, I will be happy if I can get mine to look any where near as good that. Cheers. 👍

Excellent restoration!! Are the collars at each end of the wooden handle (5' 12") a drive fit, or are they soldered in place, or what? You did not show that bit of the re-assembly.

Very nice, indeed. When you took that really sharp looking screwdriver... no wait, is that a palm chisel?... if he's not careful there, he's going to split that handle right... and.... there he did it... oh... he's doing that on purpose... wonder how that's going to look in the end? Just great, thank you. One thing I find interesting is the three screws holding the top handle on were Philips head, not flat. That surprises me. Any (rough) idea when it was made?

Drilling large holes through hardwood is definitely a use case. With a brace, you can get a lot more torque than even a corded electric drill. Unless you've got a Hole Hawg 😁. Also, a brace lets you feel when a bit is breaking through or binding before bad things happen.

The two halves of the handle *might* be held together with hide glue? In which case, some steam might get it apart.

Did that retaining pin really come out as easily as you made it look at 3:30, or was that after some persuasion? I have a Mohawk Shelburne brace with a similar pin but I think mine is rusted solid. Great vid.

Yeah i picked up a stanley 965N yesterday for like 4dollars with same config but tugging at the pin didn't get it out so then i flushed the chuck mechanism in bezine to get rid of years' grease/oil/grit... mostly.... still a little grrrr in the ratchet selector... knurles all ckeaned up nicely by brass brush in drill.... your video will help me to retry the dissembling but i am not foreseeing going all the way like you did.... Excellent and beautiful estoring job!
