BR00TAL BASS AND GUITAR TONE w/ Buster Odeholm & Born Of Osiris

The key to great tone for mixing downtuned metal guitars is locking them in with a great bass tone. Buster Odeholm shows how he does it with the raw multi-tracks for "The Other Half Of Me" by Born Of Osiris.

Generally that's true, but I think it also depends about the style and approach you are going for. For example in Vildhjarta's new album I feel the main focus is on the guitars and the ambience(even thought the drums and bass do sound pretty monumental too).

Sometimes people really puzzle me. You don't have to love this style, but to go as far as to say the "low end is wimpy," or "I can't tell what notes the guitars are playing"... really? You can't hear what chords the guitars are playing? It's clear as day. This mix works amazingly well for the style. Crisp, punchy, in-your-face and aggressive while having enough control to be listenable at high volumes. Judging something by how it sounds in solo, as many people here seem to do, is a pretty great way to show how little you actually know. :)

It’s def an artistic choice. While it’s characteristic of “modern metal” it has been around for a while. i agree that 90% of music doesnt need such specific shaping but this is a style known for being over processed and thats what everyone does. thats what the song calls for but i agree, I would rather hear some actual bass sound instead of just the subs since the high end of the bass is pretty much entirely buried with guitars and drums let alone when vocals come into play as well
