BR in the 1980s - The Alan Harrison Collection Part 46 Warrington Arpley (British Rail Trains)

During the summer of 1986, my good friend Alan travelled around the UK, armed with a hefty VHS camera, recording the railway scene. I'm delighted to be able to bring you the results. In Part 46, Alan stations himself on the Stutchers Lane Bridge in Warrington, overlooking Arpley Juntion on the LNWR’s Ditton Junction to Skelton Junction line. Sadly, this line had closed to through traffic merely 12 months previously, after defects were discovered on the incredible high level bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal at Latchford. The remaining stub of track just outside Warrington however, still saw a remarkable amount of freight traffic. The sidings were not only used for storage but also for the reversal of MGR coal trains to and from the nearby Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. In this video we see a loaded train, possibly from Point of Ayr Colliery in North wales, arrive past Warrington Yard as a Peak class 45 heads an eastbound Transpennine working towards Bank Quay Station in the background. The two twenties run round before powering off, underneath the station on the West Coast Mainline, towards the Power Station. Class 20s and class 25s abound, with two of the latter happily chattering away as they shunt a train of empty mineral wagons into a siding. We also see another pair of 25s on bogie flats, 97405 (40060) on a ballast working, a class 56 heading a northbound MGR along the WCML, a class 47 heading for Fiddlers Ferry and a pair of class 20s shunting Speedlink wagons. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. Thank you.

To think we used to get all this entertainment for free! Many a happy hour spent on this bridge although sadly we used to curse the choppers as they were so common in those days.... For the ultimate Nostalgia Trip I’d recommend watching this video whilst sat next to a large box of Persil Automatic and inhaling at regular intervals....

That’s interesting Tony and something I’d never really thought about. What happened and why were they no good? I used to regularly watch a class 25 double heading with a class 40 on the unfitted coal wagons at Point of Ayr Colliery in North Wales (I think the coal went to Fiddlers Ferry?) . And double headed 25s would sometimes work the stone trains up at Blackrocks Junction in the High Peak. I’m not certain, but I thought they did work some coal trains around Scotland. So I’m intrigued as to why Shirebrook were so unhappy with them.

@@kartwheelkarl The drivers found they were not powerful enough to pull loaded coal trains without assistance, If you had a 25 in Clipstone colliery trying to assemble a loaded train you were generally in trouble, Lack of power no weight equals lack of adhesion, They were sent back to Scotland they were alright on T19 and T20 local trip jobs drop a few wagons off pick a few up and take where required. I believe that there are plans to do away with the run round roads at Latchford and change the junction, so you can run straight into Arpley yard without running Round, but when that is happening is anyone`s guess. This brought back some memories, I spent hours and hours, shunting those MGR wagons at Arpley and Walton old jct. Great video mate 👍
