BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
Manchester Piccadilly Station on 8th June 1989
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Manchester Piccadilly Station taken on 08/06/1989. From the end of the platform the catenary certainly looked very futuristic. Class 304s in a variety of liveries were still abundant and not a voyager in sight...keep an eye out for the double headed class 31 train arriving. I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

Brings back memories of my student days. All those trips to Southampton (sorry), and back. I can't remember a single train ever arriving less than an hour late 🤣

That's a warm and fuzzy farty sound from the Blue classic DMU there, how comforting that was when swaying gently from side to side on the dusty deep sinking seats, was always like going back to the womb 😂 , great memories, thanks again

And a brand new 90014 with the, thankfully, proper size numbers they'd started to apply following the brief period of the silly tiny ones on InterCity locos
Excellent- so much variety

I was surprised to see the tow sets of Class 304's at the start... which then became THREE! This must have been a morning visit because the only time 304's (and later 305's) operated in pairs was on ECS workings from Longsight in preparation for the morning peak, or after about 7pm when the evening peak was over and trains went to hourly, and units were paired up for ECS back to Longsight. Incidentally, it used to be the same case for Class 323's, but in the last few years they've started being used on Manchester to Liverpool stoppers alongside pairs of Class 331's. This was a almost blast from the past for me. My first visit to Manchester Piccadilly was New Years day 1991, before my family and I made Manchester our home in the Sprint of 1991, and it's still my home today!

The class 31s used to operate services to Hull and Cleethorpes. Before the opening of the Hazel Grove chord they operated via New Mills Central. The Glasgow service was normally operated by Class 47s back then.

Class 303 & 304 in multiple? 🤨 Didn't know they could. They certainly couldn't operate the doors on the 303s from the 304.
