BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
NORWICH STATION on 10th JULY 1987
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Norwich Station taken on 10/07/1987. I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

As a 10 year old , a friend and I used to catch train from Norwich to Wymondham. My dad used to pick us up from Wymondham. He'd always say don't forget to get off at Wymondham just incase we went on to spoonerow or Attleborough.

The 08 shunter, we see at 04:15, was named "The Canary", earlier in 1987, by the then captain of Norwich City, Steve Bruce.

During 1990, when most Norwich sets had DBSOs, the 08.30 off Liverpool Street had to be shunt-released at Norwich. If you asked the shunter and guard nicely and kept a low profile, you could ride the 08 to the Holding Sidings. That is how I got 08 936 and 08 868 for haulage.

Great video this brought back memories back of going to Thorpe Station in the early 80's before the class 86 took over the service to London. when you look at pictures videos on Norwich station and the freight yards Back then to how it looks now aday Norwich has changed a massive amount. remember as a child the lines going right down to near the river wensum. Nowadays it all shops etc there. remember going on the Birmingham service from Norwich with the class 31 wonderful memories. Thank you for posting. you gained a sub as well look forward to more videos.

Wow! Great quality video, sound and colour, and what a variety of locos and stock too. So little of this remains, just bare bones of the station plus a tiny yard with a "virtual quarry". Plenty of Stadler units and retail, though! Oh, for a time machine.

Only ever travelled from Norwich once, single trip to Lpool Street. My gran lived close to Melton constable, so main interest was the NNR and walking the derelict tracks from constable . M&GN for ever, forget great eastern.

I remember traveling on the early Inter City carriages to Norwich in the early nineties. All wood panels and comfy bouncy seats. A boiling hot day at Liverpool Street and they had just begun the refurbishment so you couldn't hear yourself think with the noise.

I think the 86s were based at Stratford, having taken over from the 47s. Ilford was the main EMU depot, starting from the early days of the Class 306 (1949), and then 302/307/305/308/309.

I have been into British railways for over 50 years and from watching a few of your videos this week, I've only just realised that some 2-car Class 101s had driving trailers, as opposed to engines in each coach. Every day's a school day.

This would have been just weeks after the 86s started hauling electric intercity services through to London. Nice catch of the unusual liveried 86233 in there too! I wonder if 86401 ever visited Norwich? The scene had changed a bit by the time I first visited Norwich (circa '92) DBSOs had ended most loco shunting operations, and many of the first-gen DMUs had given way to the new Sprinter units, while 158s were on the cross country runs. The station its self isn't much changed today, although its surrounding certainly have, thanks to redevelopment of the old sidings and warhouses.

I don't think NSE liveried 86 401 ever made it to Norwich. But 86 007 worked Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria, and Liverpool Street to Bishops Stortford to Liverpool Street, 86 324 from Southend Victoria to Clacton via Shenfield, and 86 316 from Clacton to Liverpool Street on the Great Eastern Pullman with the Manchester Pullman stock. The Great Eastern Pullman is on KZread. Plus 85 101 (formerly 85 006) worked to Walton-on-Naze. I was on both tours. The East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel have organised tours too. I got 86 238 from Romford to Peterborough (the tour started at Colchester) and went to York.

Those London to Norwich trains were long rakes 11 coaches on some. No sign of any DBSOs. It must of been before there introduction. The driver at 22.00 compressed them buffers a bit tight , it’s a wonder he didn’t pop the saddle’s off.

Bledy hell. At about 11.30 that 86222 moves back again AFTER the shunter goes in to couple up. He must have shat himself! That driver should have been sacked on the spot for that! It's normally out of drive, handbrake on, clear signal to shunter to ho under.
