Nice video, I enjoyed the voiceover history of this fine locomotive. I also have to blame Lewis's marvelous videos for inspiring me to splash out on a loco. In my case a Hornby Duchess class Sir William A Stanier. And for generally reviving my interest in model railways. I've spent far too much money recently as a consequence. I regret none of it. I suspect their are plenty of other people who have been affected in this way. Maybe Lewis should ask Hornby for an affliate link. I feel he deserves some form of commission!

Mouldy Raspberry is a top channel: I never miss a video (as is the case with yours too!) Oliver Cromwell is a fascinating loco, and is well known in East Anglia, where I now live. After completing its final day of steam duties, it was stabled at Diss station in the Waveney Valley (a place from where I regularly catch the train to London) for a while before being moved to the nearby Bressingham steam museum. It was also a well chosen celebrity (along with Pete Waterman) to mark the opening of the North Norfolk Railway's connection with Network Rail's line at Sheringham. The loco became the first engine to cross the road via the newly commissioned level crossing from NR's station to that of the NNR. A few videos can be found on YT that record this event, in which OC looks majestically magnificent. Your loco looks equally gorgeous!

Hi Mike had this problem with a Sir Archibald Sinclar the valve gear fell off numerous times and other bits and pieces, although I was offered a replacement by my local dealer, I stuck with it stripped it down completely rebuilt . My conclusion was that it was not put together properly in the first place, now run in she runs perfectly. I would love a Brittania class but would love Iron Duke so may have to track down a decent Brittania, rename and number. It's sad that we have to go though this process after paying so much in the first place. Come on Hornby this is your business, small parts falling off, can understand as they are so finely detailed but not motor's ,valve gear and certainly not bent bodywork. Thanks for the warning Mike and I won't blame Lewis 😉

I have the Triang version of this, has a similar presence to it but not quite so intricately detailed by a long shot. The little addon details make this loco feel almost photorealistic from some angles!

However I do have some triang locos, and they run quite weel - (I have a pannier tank - Ive only just had to service it). So Hornby arent all that bad.

Super video as always Mike, most enjoyable thank you. I still can’t believe such shoddy models can make it through QC. One year I bought six new locos, five of which had to be replaced or refunded. Ironically the only one that was OK in that bunch was the Hornby one, it was Dapol, Heljan, Oxford and Bachmann that all came with faults. That Mouldy Raspberry bloke has got a lot to answer for. In my case it’s the Bachmann 4MT 😁 All the best, Andrew

Glad you enjoyed it Andrew, I really do feel we are treated badly by all the makers, China is the problem I am sure they just don't care and the hideous glue marks and duff motors prove the point, probably little more than rich mans toys to them. Yes Lewis's railway video do indeed inspire as do his detailing efforts.

A great video Mike. Your list of allocations was very useful, and pleased to know Thomas Hardy was allocated to Stewarts Lane, as that's the model I'm thinking of getting, and I particularly want a Southern based one - although it's now at a premium price, and have to weigh up if it's worth taking the plunge considering the potential problems with this model. I've just been watching an old film from 1951 called "The Happy Family" (It's on KZread in full) and 70009 Alfred the Great makes an appearance at Nine Elms.

Excellent Mike. The Britannia is my favourite steam loco and luckily I have a mint Hornby example after a few mods to overcome the loco/tender connection. I'm sure that no more info is required on that subject, Great video as always Mike. All the best - Another Mike lol

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Mine has the ringfield tender motor with pickup via the loco through the axles and then the drawbar. It became very erratic when running . I noticed that the chassis had the space and drilled and tapped holes for a pickup plate Triang style so i fitted one and wired it to the chassis (same electrical path). That overcame the axle continuity problem and it now runs superbly.

Alongside its normal fleet Westhaven includes locomotives that visited Swanage when I worked there. Oliver Cromwell came in a couple of times and so I had to include it too. Not yet chipped and nor is sister and fellow visitor Britannia.

We're spoilt here in Leicester with her being stabled at Lougborough on the Great Central Railway, and she is now being overhauled at a prestigious rate. One of the few benefits of lockdown, I suppose. Lovely to have her stabled alongside 9F, No. 92214 "Leicester City". They make a fine pair.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Hi, just looking through the GCR's "Mainline" Magazine, there is no specific comment, but given she will be back in prestine working order when she leaves the shed, I have no reason to suppose she won't venture back out onto the network as she has all the appropriate kit and approvals, unless the NRM specifically want to rest her, but then I don't think they would have contracted the GCR and 45305 Society to overhaul her. Interestingly, Ive just seen in the magazine a feature on a new Bachmann model of 9F, "Leicester City", so people could collect the pair. It seems Bachmann are slowly covering all the engines stabled at the GCR, as they have already made a model of Robinson's 8K 2-8-0. That also is being overhauled.

It seems to me that Hornby in some cases still they're making just "toys." At first glance Oliver Cromwell looks to be a fine model, but then you see how it takes curves, and groan! I have this model myself but have barely run it, my layout being mostly setup for DCC. I have Winston Churchill waiting to be shipped out to Australia when finances permit, and do hope that this is not yet another example of Hornby's "near enough is good enough" game. Such things will lead to loss of sales and other manufacturers such as Dapol and Heljan picking up where Hornby leaves off.

Hi, thanks. I have to say I really dislike the 'new' rear pony truck, they never used to do that so there is no need now, it just spoils the locos. My Winston Churchill has run perfectly since she arrived in the funeral pack a while back. Good luck with yours

Love the Britannia's. Bought William Wordsworth a few years ago second hand from a well known online trader and not cheap. Great model except it galloped rather than running smoothly. Got the courage to take it apart assuming it needed a service. After lubricating etc still had the problem so disassembled the gearbox to find a cracked gear wheel. Found a replacement fitted it and it now runs smoothly. Got a refund from said trader for the gear wheel so all well in the end. A truly impressive loco despite being Hornby!

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I have an uncredited photo of it disassembled with the motor removed as it seems it wasn't a unique fault. Other than that I used the service guide and was very careful. I cant remember any specific problems - I do occasionally end up repairing things but fortunately its only me that sees it! You have to take some credit as well as I have remedied some issues watching your service guide videos and applied the same methods!

Hi, your quite right, Lewis' channel is brilliant, i've been a subscriber to it for ages................Like you, I was almost bitten by one of his locos when he did the Hornby Coronation model recently..............I agree with all of your comments reading below, Hornby seems to be very hit and miss, I actually sold off alot of mine about 2 years ago...............Yes I had to put a new motor in my BR Std Class 7 too, because it was just too noisy, shame as their models do look stunning most of the time. I also totally agree with the Pre-order comments too, I hate you can't wait to see the product first before buying. Great video, best regards Dave.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Thanks for the reply, it was quite a few years ago, though the same design as yours. I recall the problem started with a wire coming off of the motor, trying to solder it back on, the connection just seemed to melt away and ruined the motor. It wasn't too difficult to get into the body, had to be super careful of the speedo drive on the train coupled axle. One problem I find on new locos, whenever you touch something, something else falls off, they are so fragile now days. I got the new motor from Peter's Spares, the model was fine afterwards. I have sold it on now though after becoming disillusioned with my Hornby and Bachmann locos, poor running, not powerful, just not up to the job. I got interested in US outline which introduced me to DCC and sound for a while, I do still love them. Then I got a Heljan diesel and being so impressed with their mechanisms and detail, I got tired with many of the poor Hornby and some Bachmann stuff, so sold off so many locos and now I'm just super picky what I buy. My last loco was the Suttons Class 24, and oh my it knocks spots off anything else. Anyway, sorry for the long winded reply. All the best Dave.

Nicely presented & well edited sound, but honestly, with that slow speed lurch I would send this one back to Hornby as well. They really can't be allowed to get away with inferior products at inflated prices. You pay premium, you expect competent engineering.

Thanks Chris, I think I am at the point of 'do I want one or not' because if I sent this 75% ok model back I could end up with a right pup like the first one. She does seem to be getting smoother, just sounds odd.

Great Story, l don't know how much you paid but the prices have certainly risen .What concerns me are the limited stock models which are sold out on pre order can you get a replacement ? Putting it mildly Hornby produced a box of crap.

Sorry to hear about your Hornby Problems. I have the no. 7000 Britannia from the Diamond Jubilee train Pack of 2012. It has a Hornby decoder and has always been an excellent runner and is used weekly. Some you tubers say the golden age for Hornby models was 2001 to 2005 when they were first made in China. From my recent Hornby range purchases (no steam outline) my one Class 66 is trouble free but one of three Class 87 had no lights at one end caused by badly routed wiring being cut when the body was fitted. I could have repaired it myself but returned it and it was replaced without quibble by my local model shop. All my Class 87 are excellent runners. I believe that the only way to get improved products is to return them to source for a refund or replacement. Manufacturers may then get the message when it costs them money. Fixing problems yourself will not result in product improvement.

Hi Robert, I absolutely agree on the 2000-2005 models, they are worlds apart from the cheap and nasty but great looking stuff offered now. You are quite right about returning stuff we just should not accept this terrible lack of care.

Very good looking model, had a similar issue with a Heljan Beyer Garratt I got recently, she would not run forward because the right hand side valve gear was upside down and when that was fixed the gear on the left side fell apart. I have a new one sent, she runs well but damn I am a little worried about really running the model.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited sadly gone are the days of British made models you could trust I guess, I have some old Hornby locos that still run very well, yeah they are noisy but they run. Having said that my local model store are great, the guys there really care about the hobby so getting replacements and repairs is great... needs to be all the way down here in New Zealand haha

On Britannia's you will notice a buffers up moulding.Other named Britannia's also have this affiction! I bought my Oliver back around 2005/6 with no problems.I have come to the conclusion that between2005/15 was probably it's best time to purchase? Thanks for the video by the way!

Thanks Rob, yes lovely I've wanted one for ages but had avoided it due to Hornby's let downs. And true to form they caused me much heart break and I remain worried about this one and it's grinding sound, if I open it I might break some of the miocro thin bits???

Hornby belong in a museum.... what's the deal with the back bogie ???it appears to be fixed and permanently derailed. I think Sam's trains fixed it by putting a spring in it....

Hi, prototypicaly the rear pony truck is correct in that they did not pivot, however I do prefer the older type that do. It can't derail as it has no flanges.

Interesting that in the world of steam trains Royal and aristocratic names tend to dominate, so nice - historically - to have the one name that breaks that pattern, if only very briefly! I am not a great fan of the man, but it's all part of our rich history.

A lovely loco but as with a lot of Hornby products I am put off buying as I live in France and returning a faulty product is a faff (more so since Brexit) the product take two to three weeks to arrive and if I need to return it it's possibly six weeks until the replacement arrives. I can't help wondering why Hornby don't fit an articulated rear pony truck on their locos any more, I noticed on your close up shots that the flangeless wheel rides what looks like a millimetre above the rail on both the Britannia and theCoronation at the end of the clip and completely loses alignment with the track on the tighter curves, like you I don't have the luxury of huge radius curves on my layout and it annoys the life out of me. Is there any technical reason for this or is it just a cost issue? Just been sorting through my dad's collection which dates back to the sixties and on all the locos the trailing pony is articulated. Nice looking loco and a nice video like you I love Mouldy Raspberry's videos and layout, not sure given the cost of locos these days I have to bottle to start weathering them like he does though.

The only reason they do it can be cost because even until maybe 2017 they were properly articulated now this arrangement and it looks awful and even bumps up the side of the rails sometimes. Oh, does this one make me tremble! The Hornby 7MT is drop dead gorgeous, but they’re some of the worst quality related models I’ve had experiences with... We had about three or four of the Fifteen Guinea Special train pack that came along a couple of years ago in the shop. Each one was problematic, with one suffering from loose crank pins - causing jams and awful clicking - and all three locos missing their whistles, of all possible things... My best wishes to you with this model, Mike. Of all possible locos, this one just doesn’t deserve to go wrong, she’s a beauty. You’ve more patience with Hornby than I do I think!

Hi, oh dear yes its very worrying, I am still not 100% with her due to the motor noise, but scared to open her as it looks like many bits might fall apart. Like you say lovely to look at. I think I have reached the end with Hornby, they seem able to make small tank engines ok so I am going to try hard not to buy any new larger models from them. Just can't take the heartbreak and 'Hornby Sickness' Thanks for the info, take care.

....It causes me concern to read all the negative reports with HORNBY models.. as an Aussie, it is difficult to purchase HORNBY models unless it is pre ordered, and most models are difficult to obtain through Hobby stores. It means going online via AMAZON or EBAY to purchase anything of interest in their range. The problem being, if there is a fault with the model it means returning it, generally to the UK, and the cost associated. I have started getting back into the hobby and purchased three engines, P2, britannia, Princess Royal and have yet to unbox them. I am now concerned they might be trouble. I am not familiar with other BRANDS, and would appreciate recommendations in this area. I lean towards large steam locos... so am really disappointed about HORNBY quality issues. cheers.

Hi, yeah I am really sorry it must be bad in your situation. I've had no trouble with Bachmann so maybe look there, if you check back on my videos you will see a lovely WD I got from them, it's been perfect.

Why are Hornby making so much junk now ? I have watched a video on KZread re the w1 and was shocked by the poor quality crap being sold at unbelievable high prices ? I don't now have a layout but do watch train video's and it's becoming more common to see this ! Are they just getting to complex to mass produce ? Anyway another nice video .

I know mate, I feel the same but thought I might be lucky this time

I declined several such models and the two Clan models...never again...absolute rubbish. I also cancelled the new 9F models, mainly due to their poor quality motors. Believing that Hornby quality has declined and not improved, I also cancelled my order for the Hornby Blue Pullman...the latter has saved me more than £700.** alone. Like many modellers have previously said...No More New Models until the price and quality rapidly improves!!

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited we have a Modern Hornby version but doesn't pull as good, I recently purchased Two Bachmann V2s and can't fault them at all, they even have Pickups on the Pony wheels, wouldn't this be good if that was a standard feature on all Locos, Be good and Stay Safe
