BR 3MT 82045 Update - Fitting the new pony trucks and moving from the shed on Severn Valley Railway

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After month's work, new-build BR 3MT 82045 is finally a 2-6-2 as others in its class would have been all those years ago.
The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust worked hard with the Bridgnorth Motive Power Depot team on Monday 6th December to fit both the front and rear pony trucks thanks to another faultless example of co-operation between the SVR's engineers and the Trust.
In this video, you'll see the first time that 82045 has fully rolled out the shed in this form and you'll get up close and personal with the Severn Valley Railway's state of the art wheel drop.
With work well advanced on the boiler, and the side tanks ready for trial mounting, 82045 is looking more and more like the next member of this long-lost Riddles class, which would have been a frequent sight on the BR-era Severn Valley line from first introduction in 1952 right through until 1963

I have a 3MT that is 60 years older than 82045. It’s Tri-ang OO gauge. It’s literally done a million miles, and after a full service and new pickup plate it runs lovely. Anyway, 80245 inspired me to buy a new Bachmann 3MT in BR Green! Let’s hope it runs for 60 years like the Tri-ang. 😃

👍 Brought back a happy memory of watching a 3MT having its fire cleaned at Barmouth at night, viewed from the footbridge prior to the run back to Machynlleth. I can see it now in my mind’s eye. It’s funny what gets remembered and what vanishes altogether…

That wheel drop looks amazing. Well done to all involved with this. I enjoyed my little tour of the "0-6-0" loco on its piece of track in late 2018 with Chris P.

Great work and all credit to the dedication of all those involved in the project. I always lamented the fact that not one made it into preservation as my first train set was the Tri-ang 82004 in lined black with a bogie bolster, bogie well wagon and a U.D. milk tank plus brake van in 1958. What an odd combination of stock for this loco! I also recall seeing these locos on the Cambrian line on local passenger and the Pwllheli portion of the Cambrian Coast Express circa 1963-4 whilst holidaying in Criccieth so fantastic to see one emerging again.

I was very disappointed that none of these smaller British Railways locomotives were ever preserved, lacking the glamor of the big steam locomotives I suppose. I'm now following the new construction of this class 3 tank locomotive with great interest. I have always liked the balanced look of them, so about 25 years ago I had a 4 mm scale model of locomotive 82016 constructed for me for my model railway, in BR black livery as its condition when allocated to the Southern Region.

Most of these went to South Wales Wales scrapyards. Like Cashmores, Newport, Birds, Buttygeigs and some to Cohens, Kettering. All these yards did a great job slicing them for scrap. Cashmores had limited storage and usually did a fine job cutting the locos soon after they arrived. Non went to Woodhams at Barry, so that meant non survived very long.

@@bazza3643 82016 was last based at Nine Elms and was cut up at Birds, Morriston, Swansea in 1965. If it had gone to Barry, Woodhams were such muppets, it would have probably hung around rusting for decades! I'm surprised you like the look of these. Other standards looked more modern, and this looks cobbled together to me, especially the coal bunker.

SteamlocoScrapper : I've always admired the look of them. As you know they are very similar in appearance to the LMS Ivatt class 2 2-6-2 tank engine. if it is possible for a main line steam engine, I think that they look both cute and functional at the same time, and that is why I had a model of one of them made for me, long before the Bachmann model make its debut. I have photos of them on the empty Fawley Esso oil trains and ecs workings in and out of Waterloo.

There is/was? a project on the Bluebell Railway to construct a ‘new’ build 2mt 2-6-2 tank although in effect it was a partial rebuild as they were using many parts from 2mt 2-6-0 78059. I’m not sure if the project has stalled or whether it’s still ongoing? In any case there are 3 survivors from the 2mt Mogul class 78018/78019 on GCR and 78022 on KWVR.

Yes, Cashmores did some stirling work chopping these up. Once they got in that yard they were a nicely smoking pile of junk in a couple of days. Unlike those muppets at Barry who left them lying around for decades!
