Boyz n the Hood is a 1991 American coming-of-age hood drama film written and directed by John Singleton in his feature directorial debut.[2] It stars Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, Laurence Fishburne, Nia Long, Regina King, and Angela Bassett. Boyz n the Hood follows Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who is sent to live with his father Furious Styles (Fishburne) in South Central Los Angeles, surrounded by the neighborhood's booming gang culture. The film's title is a double entendre; a play on the term boyhood and a reference to the 1987 N.W.A rap song of the same name, written by Ice Cube.
Singleton initially developed the film as a requirement for application to film school in 1986 and sold the script to Columbia Pictures upon graduation in 1990. During writing, he drew inspiration from his own life and from the lives of people he knew and insisted he direct the project. Principal photography began in September 1990 and was filmed on location from October to November 1990. The film is notable for featuring breakout roles for Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, and Nia Long.
Boyz n the Hood premiered in Los Angeles on July 2, 1991, and was theatrically released in the United States ten days later. The film became a critical and commercial success, praised for its emotional weight, acting, and writing. It grossed $57.5 million in North America, and was nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the 64th Academy Awards, making Singleton the youngest person and the first African-American to be nominated for Best Director.
The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. In 2002, the United States Library of Congress deemed it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

During the shooting of this film, there was a Sizzler restaurant where the Staples Office Supply now sits. The hamburger stand stood between the Sizzler (now Staples) and the entrance to the shopping center. The scene where Dough Boy's low rider creeps up to the hamburger stand was filmed at the roadway just inside of the shopping center, not at the entrance to the shopping center.
@Freeman_Ave

Absolutely correct. The burger spot was actually closer to Crenshaw, east of that staple center. It’s was below what is now a mall parking structure. On the corner of Crenshaw was a Broadway bank then the burger spot,and the entryway. Which both were across the street from the liquor warehouse.
Crazy fact: Chris the guy who's in the wheel chair, is actually paralyzed from getting shot in real life.

I saw this the day it came out and a few times after. I still have the VHS and now the Blu-ray. It's a classic that I still ball my eyes to every single time I watch it. Rest in peace John Singleton, he's a legend. 💝
Great film making by the late John Singleton. The movie is still relevant today after 30 years with the themes of gun violence, gangs, and the innocent who get caught in the middle of this chaos. Awesome video Scott
Saw this in high school when my English teacher showed us. Really good movie!
i gave up on movies after the 80s, 80s movies are the best, but there are exceptions, this movie is an exception, it's a classic, i have the vinyl soundtrack LP

Hey Scotty, hope you're well Man! I really loved this vid. And yes also one of my all time favourite movies of all time. This was in the height of the gangsta rap time and this movie really sent home what living in the kind of places were like back in the day. It gave us all a visual to put to all those raps songs we were listening to. Life in those places wasnt all money, cars and girl, but more about how everyday was about survival and if you had a crosshair on your head. The movie didn't only show how it really was, but had a lot of lessons in it which would make you think about life and the repercussions of choices you make, which was amazing. I've seen the movie a heap of times, but Mum hasnt. Thanks for your video Mum wants to watch it, so we are going to make a night to watch it together. Once again Man, great lining up of the shots. I love seeing what the places look like now in comparison to back in the day. Great work!! Take care Man and catch you on the next one. Peace! ✌

At about 18:55 that’s closer to where the burger place was…… i was just a kid but it seemed like they built that place for the movie and it stayed open for a little after when the movie came out.
