Who let's their 6 & 8 year old go out alone on a cold winters day when it's getting dark and minus temperatures?! I know it's cruel to the parents to point this out. But I have children this age and they are not competent to be alone to assess danger/consequences on their own. I have very mature for their age kids, and I would never even dream of it!!!! It's crazy to be honest. I am sorry to the families, I truly am, and I wish you no Ill feeling - only love and compassion. But they should never have been alone, even with older cousins. We don't live in a world where that is safe.

The 10 and 11 year old is extremely questionable especially in the weather conditions and location they were in but 6 and 8 if outrageous, negligence was the cause of their kids deaths, the water and cold was simply the mode in which they died.

This is truly the saddest news I have read in a long time. My deepest condolences to the families and friends. This is heartbreakingly tragic.

How do you know the circumstances? Have the police released the details yet? I mean everybody knows there will be an inquest etc but some of us have more empathy and wouldn't talk of 'blame' while the boys have only just dies and not even buried yet...

As many have said, how can you leave your single digit aged children to play near an ice covered lake without supervision!? I hope the police will investigate the parents and consider charges of neglect. This was a completely avoidable accident.

We educate our children in schools every year about the dangers associated with bonfire night but we do not give them any information around winter water safety. This really needs to be addressed nationally. This has prompted me to discuss it with my children. The whole nation feels this pain at a time of year when it's all about making it magical for children. I can't imagine how you continue after such a tragedy. The problem is no one actually warns children of the risks be it parents or schools these days. We used to have films about crossing the road (green cross code), not going near strangers and not going into water in icy conditions.

This is a heart breaking tragedy. Nothing will bring these little ones back, and the families now have to try and piece their lives back together. No one was to blame, this was a tragic accident that could have happened to any loved one. Hazards and life threatening issues should be taught to children at school, schools are where they learn. It’s like the kids jumping in river water during the hot months, there’s so many hazards such as shopping trolleys, concrete block, fly tipping hazards, water borne infections that could cause injury or death. If the schools don’t have resources, surely a Go fund me page could kick this in motion, by the right people. Maybe survivors of such tragedies could help give talks? Like the others have said, public info films were always on when I was a kid, why have they stopped, why aren’t to gov promoting them? Nothings is too expensive when it comes to saving lives…..surely.

How did this happen?.. How were such young children left unattended? Especially in this weather. I can't grasp how this tragedy could occur.

Proper sad, hindsight is a terrible thing, the what-ifs, what if the parents, what if this, and what if that, all account for nothing. Sad fact is it is an absolute tragedy. As kids most of us got away with things we shouldn't have been doing, most of us had lucky escapes in one way or another. As parents most of us have made mistakes. Life is cruel sometimes. This is one of those times.

Tragic, but 6, 8, 11, why were they out on their own? Were there any adults with them?? Nothing has been mentioned in this regard.

Why should they? They have far more important business to talk about: THE BOYS DYING/HANGING onto LIFE in hospital. They haven't even been buried yet. Why should the police explain to a freakish ghoul like you the personal circumstances of their death? Everyone else knows the facts will be revealed after the police investigations, inquest, coroner's report, etc. NOT just because you want to feel superior and gloat about the deaths of poor children to the bereaved parents.

This is tragic beyond measure but I don't think it helps to point out that parents should never leave children unattended. The parents if these children will carry this guilt for the rest of their lives and we can't even begin to imagine we what that feels like or the what the results will be on the lives of family members, I am thinking of mental health. This story is absolutely heartbreaking. I feel so sorry for the family and community. But I, like others have to ask how this could have happened? Why were they out alone? Where were the parents, guardians? did they know where they were? Most 6 year olds are inside their houses playing with their toys, not walking the streets alone. Where’s the parental responsibility in all this ? How about we just let our 3 years olds out on the streets to play all day ? Did the parents think it was ok to let them all be out, supervised by a 9 year old? More questions than answers

@@DS-fo4ed The oldest was 11, not that it's much better but i grew up in the suburbs and at age 11 we used to be allowed out on the block with the other neighborhood kids at night to play Kick The Can. There was a dozen of us and there were never any problems but say someone got hit by a car, of course it would look terrible without any context And i'm not defending these young kids being unsupervised on ice. But for all we know it was their backyard where they've played thousands of times. In hindsight it's still bad parenting but unless it was just egregiously negligent (like one story i read where a mother left her infant in a car that was 120 degrees to go inside to gamble) then there's no reason to go after them criminally. I'm sure they are never going to forgive themselves and are suffering beyond comprehension already.,

My heart is aching at the loss of 3 beautiful young children,parents aren't to blame kids will be kids and younger kids always follow oldest ,when I was a kid I've done exactly the same, kids will always sneak off and play were their told not to, its just a tragedy,the parents lives are now destroyed and will forever be saying what if,what only,so please don't put any blame on parents 🙏 💙 💔,

There are lots of accusations flying around despite no one knowing the full story. Just about everyone commenting on here will have done dangerous things when they were kids.

Has parental responsibility, and society's expectations of it, now fallen to such a low level that no one in the mainstream media is asking what the fuck the parents of these kids were doing while their children were running around on a semi frozen lake?

Heart wrenching 💔💔💔

Heartbreaking for all family and friends of these beautiful boy’s. No word’s will ease that pain, but know that we will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Sadly, we are so used to not having frozen lakes and snow, kids do not appreciate the dangers of thin ice, nor do they know what thickness of ice is required to support a human.

Dungshoveleux We knew as kids not to go on frozen lakes and ponds and I dont know of any one who ever did. Do they not teach that in school any more?

Oh, that explains it then; never mind the fact they were allowed out unsupervised by irresponsible people who should have known better. To call this tragedy an 'accident' is offensive in the extreme; it was wilful negligence on the part of the parents.
