How i see it is when they notice and panic its already too late and them just looking mildly disappointed is them accepting their fate. I think the reason they look fine again afterwards is because after that line travels over them its not technically them anymore and is something posessing them. Please correct me if im wrong tho because im not familiar with this "transfer" thing.
