Yes! Was hoping you would feature a new album at some point. I was born in the mid-60s and love all the classics from the 60s/70s, but I truly believe we're living in a golden age of great new music as well - which extends back at least into the late 90s. Have you thought about covering a Weyes Blood album? Natalie's great voice (alto!), lyrics focused on present-day topics, coupled with her recent style being rooted in the 70s would be a great tie-in for the demographic of this channel. But really, do whatever you like - I'm sure you could make a compelling review of the sound of rust forming on the undercarriages of Norwegian luxury automobiles (to borrow from an old joke)!

If you’re taking suggestions for more recent(ish) albums to review, from the last decade might I suggest anything by Shabazz Palaces, but perhaps 2011’s _Black Up_ in particular? Hip-hop seems to be the musical idiom of the moment, but no one gives weird hip-hop nearly enough attention! And going back further in time, one of the most inexplicable major label decisions of the ‘90s was Columbia signing the Butthole Surfers … leading to a host of then-youths hearing “Pepper” on f.m. radio and believing they’d heard the band’s sound, BUT - the band’s creative heyday of the ‘80s produced magnificently odd albums like _Hairway to Steven, Locust Abortion Technician,_ and my personal favorite, _Psychic … Powerless … Another Man’s Sac._ If part of your project is capturing the spirit of different eras, I’d say the Butthole Surfers well-represent everything we kids were really up to in the ‘80s - all the discontent and dark humor which fermented behind the façade of Reagan’s U.S.A., which would erupt into public consciousness in the ‘90s named first the “indie” and then the “alt” and finally the “grunge” craze … although dismissing the era’s signifiers as mere surface fads would be a mistake: there was often an ethos informing the aesthetic, so major ‘90s industries from music to film to technology having raided the ‘80s and ‘70s underground continues to shape the world today, aesthetically and otherwise. And perhaps Shabazz Palaces too points to something interesting bubbling just beneath the surface of our current bleak moment, hopefully soon to erupt. Also, loads of the ‘60s stuff you’re reviewing has roots in the beat movement, which preceding the hippie era centered around Greenwich Village coffeehouses in N.Y.C. and the City Lights bookstore in S.F. … and those folks loved Pete Seeger, The Weavers, pre-electric Bob Dylan, and also some classic rock-and-roll, Chubby Checkers, Fats Domino - stuff that would’ve been in my mom’s album collection, that she might’ve played at college on her Zenith portable record player - it might be fun to see you dig back further in time, to examine the eras which informed the ‘60s. Heck, go back as far as the Wobblies, I’m quite sure the Library of Congress has made audio files of old wire recordings available, all those great 1900s protest songs are bound to be captured somewhere! I guess I’d be interested to see you hop around in time more, wardrobe and all, and to see more connections made between the past and the present. For instance, I’d had no idea the first Boygenius album’s cover referenced the 1969 _Crosby, Stills, and Nash_ album cover until you pointed it out, and I love learning stuff like that!! So, yeah, that’s all. Just some dumb random thoughts. Or keep doing what you do, this is good too! Anywho, very glad I stumbled across your channel.

Another wonderful listening experience, which I’ll return to many times. It has everything I love, and then some. Great variety of moods and textures, sweet inventive harmonies, and the lyrics are something else. What a voice! So direct, but always in a clever way.
Hey Abby: wanted you to know that my wife Sofie and I are using the song, “True Blue” to commemorate our 20th wedding anniversary this month. It’s a perfect song for us and all we’ve been through together. The album, in fact, has brought us closer. Thank you for helping us to discover this great song, and these truly great artists. It’s healing music for me.
I love Boygenius
I was so happy to find out this record lives up to the hype. I love it so much, I haven’t even take it home yet. I’ve kept it at the store to listen to there, and I’ve sold several copies in the process.
Great throw-em-off, I was like "boy, the sky truly is falling"
“Cool About It” just destroys me.
I consider your channel a channel about music discovery. Yes, you showcase mostly classic vinyl, but, to me growing up in the 80's it's mostly before my time. Of course I know The Beatles, Beachboys, and Led Zeppelin, but CSN, Blind Faith, etc. are newer discoveries for me. So, that being said, a new release like boygenius fits right in to your channel. It a new discovery - and I love discovering music (old and new). Thank your for your awesome videos! Keep em coming!
I'm an old geezer. Don't know boygenius but I do know Phoebe Bridgers. In my day a supergroup was Bloomfield, Kooper and Stills or Blind Faith.

Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus have made some of my favorite albums of all time and to hear them make a proper full album made my day. I love this album and while I don’t think it’s worth the Rolling Stone “Instant classic”, I still this album is great.

ah i can’t see this happening too often. two deep dives a week is a LOT but this one was fun!
I just discovered your channel by having the Doors video recommended and passing to see what else instead, watched in utero and loved the nuanced take, than saw this and subbed. It’s weird how ppl put Phoebe fans in the urban outfitters aesthetic vinyl collecting while not even owning a turntable hipster category, I spoke at length with a Lana Del Rey fan on how ppl get pigeon holed for liking trendy modern artists. It feels weird to explain but collecting and listening is an important part of self care and a very pleasurable activity, your channel has a lot of effort put into going depth on technical aspects and also kinda fires off on personal impressions, as a person who doesn’t go out a lot it is very enjoyable and I appreciate you sitting next to your collection to chat like a friend. I’m gunna watch the Doors video now after all even though I’ve felt quite over them since I was a teenager.
Thanks for another great review. It made a nice change... I'm feeling a bit burnt out lately on all the "classic rock"... but I did notice the album behind you and I'm looking forward to that episode.
Incredible video. Nice work. Will check out the album

Boygenius definitely has potential from what I’ve heard so far!
Great idea!! I like to discover new music so I encourage you to keep doing this more often. After watching the video, I checked out a couple of their songs and they are great!!! Thank you!! I think your great taste in music shows (from the Monkees to Neutral Milk Hotel and everything in between)
I saw the Boy Genius Rolling Stones magazine cover at the grocery store. I didn't have a clue who they were. Thanks to this video, I am now aware.
I’m SO excited for this episode, prepare for a super long comment cause I’m such a fan lol. I know a lot of the core audience in this community may not be the usual demographic for the album but I hope they give this record (no pun intended haha) a listen. As most, I got into boygenius through Phoebe Bridgers in 2020 during lockdown, I had only listened to Motion Sickness before that and got into Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker through that. I got to see Phoebe live in 2022 and her energy is such a force I swear, I truly hope to get to see boygenius this year. Also, I want to get this album on vinyl so bad merely for the locked groove on letters to an old poet, I’ll never forget hearing the part where letters to an old poet has the same melody as me and my dog. I remember staring at my friends in the listening party in such excitement, felt like a hello from an old friend. Favourites are $20, True Blue and Letters to an Old Poet! (that clip of Phoebe screaming $20 never fails to make me laugh)

I recommend the Roches if you haven't heard them yet. Especially their album Keep On Doing. Couldn't help but think of them when I heard The Record.
boygenius. They're each so awesome in their own write. I got into Julien first (not the first person ever, just in the order I listened to each of them). I think I read about her in The New Yorker or something and watch so many YT videos of her. Then I heard about Phoebe through a Jackson Browne interview and then Lucy when boygenius was on KEXP and NPR Tiny Desk. Then I bought ALL the solo works and the boygenius EP. I think I am a Julien fan. Definitely love Sprained Ankle. I find it way cool that Jackson Browne is on a version of Phoebe's Kyoto and that Phoebe makes a cameo in Jackson's Cleveland Heart video. I really like boygenius - The Record. It's fun and serious. Seriously fun without overdoing it. No pretentiousness. Sort of like, but different style than, I'm With Her (Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O'Donovan, & Sara Watkins) another supergroup of women with brilliant songwriters with solo records as well as separate groups for two of them. I like Julien's electric guitar playing and use of pedals. She went to music school in Nashville, right? I forget. I like Phoebe's scream on $20. Very informed by Kurt Cobain but with a sense of humor. That must be Phoebe fingerpicking guitar on Cool About It and Revolution 0. Maybe? Those songs are very beautiful. I hear an alternate tuning on Leonard Cohen. Maybe? I like the pure vocals of Julien on Anti-Curse. The passion is so gut wrenching and authentic. I feel like there are so many layers to unpack on this record. I have a difficult time diving into the lyrics because they are ultra poetic and referential. It'll take me time. The power of 3 is synergistic. I have the CD so I don't have that inner groove. Bummer. Me too have to listen to Lucy's solo material more. Love Lucy's songs on The Record. Thanks for the Friday surprise - very super duper Abby!!!
Thank you
From watching this video of yours, I felt the impulse to search for 'The Film'... I have to admit that I have not been moved much by a lot of current music music but I am glad to have been turned on to Boy Genius because of you. I genuinely really really liked all 3 songs and loved the videos for each song. Thank you.
You can tell who wrote exactly what Lyrics in the zine because they use their own handwriting and you'll notice it switch sometimes within songs.

Very important movement in rock n roll history! Just like the British Invasion/psychedelic counterculture in the 60’s, punk in 70’s / new wave in the 80’s and obviously the 90’s alt/grunge scene. Second British Invasion in the mid 90’s! Ooo we’ll also mention the garage rock revival of the 2000’s with bands like the White Stripes and The Strokes! So much more onwards but you get the point. Our ole friend rock n roll is always on the move something big is about to come it’s been 30 years since the Seattle scene! 20 since the Strokes debut. Oroborus, history repeats itself and it’s about time for another movement! I’m ready

I didn't really know them, apart from Phoebe (an intense writer), so after the clue picture you put up I listened to True Blood which was enjoyable for a kind of gentle insistence and saw some performance material where I thought their sound was atmospheric. It's important that there is a super group for now, vital that it's three young women taking centre stage together and I like the signals that they're sending out. The structuring of the two Vinyl Monday episodes this week has been excellent and allowed you to champion the theme of working together, becoming stronger through cooperation.

Okay, I'm sold. I keep running into a feature about boygenius everywhere I turn. It's a sign from the musical Gods. I'm somewhat familiar with Phoebe Bridgers & Lucy Dacus. Can't wait to hear it now.
Yay - extra Easter Abby! I hadn't previously heard of Boygenius (boygenius?) but I first caught Phoebe Bridger on YT when she sang a Bo Burnham song (very well). I subsequently bought 'Punisher' but really didn't get on with it I'm afraid, so I'm not ever so thirsty to hear more. Sorry.

Have you ever listened to Skating Polly? I think you would like them. Not a supergroup, bit they are a modern day girl band. They honestly might be the best band around at the moment. Their new album.comes out in June. Check 'em.out! Or not. I'm not your boss.
Thanks for the bonus content Abbie.❤ I know they're "country" but the Pistol Annie's is more of an all-female "supergroup" imo. Their first album (of their 2) is all-around pretty great. Worth listening to if you're a fan of women singers. Also, if you keep this an occasional feature, a modern group that would be cool is the female-led group Cellar Darling. They verge on metal but they feature a Hurdy Gurdy, flute, piano in addition to guitar and drums. Anna Murphy is the singer with a great voice. Their song "Insomnia" is a great 7 minute song.
Yes, I listened to some of this album. "$20" is some good, proggy math-rock! I dig it! Reminds me a bit of some St. Vincent. And the end of the song has echoes of The Fire Theft (a.k.a. Sunny Day Real Estate, sort of).
Have always been aware of Phoebe Bridgers because of my friends being fans of hers and her feature on Man on The Moon 3, and I've also been aware of this super group because of said friends of mine. As part of your core audience, 90% of my vinyl is from 1965-1982, BUT I was turned on to Julien Baker a couple years ago and loved her first two albums, Sprained Ankle and Turn Out The Lights. I am partial to female singer-songwriters, and these two were right up my alley. I wasn’t as fond of Little Oblivions as I feel the extra orchestration took away from the stripped down simplicity of her previous work, which is what I loved and made it harder to focus on her lyrics. But maybe that’s just me. Regardless, I will stream some of Boygenius and the others’ solo work to see if any of it clicks with me.
I LOVE BOYGENIUS and I'm honestly surprised your audience doesn't know (or knew) who they are (or were)... It might be early to say but I'd say this album is gonna be one of my favs this year

I got my CSN LP two days ago. It arrived really quick. Unfortunately this newer repressing, even though it's really clean and had no surface noise or problems like that, didn't have a great mix And it was a Bernie Grundman mastered LP too complete with the BG etching in the runout. It's very heavy on the bass with the mid-range and highs not being as pronounced as I would hope. I got over on the Steve Hoffman forum and most people thought it was the second to third best sounding copy. It was a 2009 reissue but I still can't tell if it was a remaster and Disgogs doesn't say that it is. I'm wondering if it was just left off because it is an upgrade apparently to the original release. I'm happy with it even though I do wish it sounded a little bit better. But it still sounds great and there will probably be future remasters of it I'm sure that might improve on the sound quality? I've never heard of this band your reviewing today. So I'm going to get back to letting the video play and see what I can learn about them 👍 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
