Right there with ya brotha. I lived on the reservation Mandan Hidatsa and Arika tribes for a couple years and seeing this shit makes me really sad. I couldn’t even fathom showing this much disrespect to those peoples…bSA really likes to play fast and loose with native iconography religious customs and their own versions of powwows… it’s all just a slap in the face for most natives today…

I’m surprised this lodge is still doing face paint. Thats not okay! That is a national OA policy. Face paint is not allowed! If national catches wind of this they can pull your charter and pull the plug on your lodge.

I'm a pretty conservative white guy, but, yeah, that is some pretty hamfisted cultural appropriation going on there. Time for a change. There is plenty of room for calling out respect for native American tradition without playing "Indian Chief, Woowoowoowooo"

This should be removed. It has Indigenous elements that the Order no longer uses or condones. If this is actually 2017 face painting was banned long before this. This video gives a distorted view of the Order of the Arrow.

This is so ridiculous, the songs this drum is singing are Kiowa songs and I know the Kiowas would never give permission to boy scouts, this has nothing to do with honoring any Native American tribes, we keep the whites out of our traditions!

I can understand where you are coming from, but when you actually go through the initiation, it makes a lot more sense. It would be better to have native Americans, but the ceremony is largely based on native american lifestyles. When I did it (my personal experience) they clearly stated that they had the blessing of the Occaneechi tribe of NC, which is federally recognized, to do these ceremonies.

ancientoakgrove These ceremonies are based off of the traditions of the Lenne Lenape tribes and are respectful. The regalia worn is not to be offensive, but to be traditionally and historically accurate. In fact, I say it is downright stupid and idiotic to claim that something so true to tradition and history is offensive. The ceremonies are done to also unite brothers in the OA and show brotherhood much like the Lenne Lenape did. Although, I do agree that it would be cooler to have some natives speak, but the Scouts is boy lead and this includes the OA.

Not that its much of a consultation, but they absolutely should not have been in face paint. Face paint has specifically not been allowed in the OA for 20+ years.

@NRG208, first off the Boy Scouts aren’t preserving anything. A quick google/youtube search will show you what I’m talking about. Secondly, a VERY small minority of indigenous people have offered their support and blessing to the Scouts. However, they do not speak for a lot of individuals or tribes.
