+Steven Bridges I start tearing up halfway through the song and by the whispered "Thanks, Mum" before the closing instrumental I'm crying. My brother Ric died of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1996. An actor who I was very fond of (Antony "Tony" Hamiliton) died in 1995. I've lost two acquaintances: Steve, a card-playing/gaming buddy and Richard, a entrepreneur who loved everything about the record business. They say time heals all wounds but I won't lie - twenty years later it still hurts.

BOY GEORGE'S IL ADORE is the 13rd song of CHEAPNESS AND BEAUTY, the last one of the album. The song has been also published as a double CD single set in 1995. On the front cover, a portrait of JESUS, on the inside cover, a queer portrait of GEORGE taken from the first original video of GENERATIONS OF LOVE. IL ADORE was written in memory of GEORGE's friend and make-up artist STEVIE HUGHES, who died of Aids during those years. In 1995 BOY GEORGE told media that the LONDON GAY COMMUNITY was losing several members because of the disease. Of course, the song is dedicated to ALL LOST BOYS. First verses, "Mother clutches the head of her dying son" describes MICHELANGELO PIETA' and in 1999, DAVID BOWIE used the same subject for the cover artwork of his album HOURS. As for me, most enigmatic verses are when he sings "...you were hurt by love but you still came right back for more..." because, as a Buddhist, the aim is NOT to come back in this life anymore. I don't know the meaning of these verses, maybe they simply mean that STEVIE HUGHES and his art and ALL LOST BOYS won't be forgotten in our minds and hearts. Finally, at the end of the song you can hear STEVIE saying "...thanks Mum", as he used to call GEORGE that way. We also thank GEORGE for the song and the full album, which is truly wonderful ❤
